and how exactly is that meant to work when the guy has a NMC?
Every player of Matthews’ calibre has dog-wagging privileges negotiated as part of his contract. I agree that we shouldn’t be running the franchise on his say so but there’s only so much leverage the front office has when it comes to his future.
Yes, Matthews has a NMC but my guess is that he’d love to go play for a US team. I think if he sees a good opportunity to jump ship, he’ll take it.

Why is it that every other organization recognizes they can effectively publicly shame the player into waiving their NMC and the Leafs act like it’s some biblical-level convenant?
You need to do right by the organization and the fans – not the player.
Short sighted if you are a team you are supposed to be aligned. Matthews is the most important person in this entire franchise not a tail. Managers who support their staff are more successful.
Well he has a direct line to Pelley, so its a bit late for that.
Star players always get consideration. It happens in every sport. This isn’t news nor is it outside the norm nor is it indicative of bad management. It’s simply what is done. Crosby made it known he didn’t want a rebuild. McDavid had a say on the coaching change. Like, what are we doing here?
I hope that everybody here knows that any plan to trade Matthews is the team committing to a 3+ year rebuild. There is no world where we trade Matthews and get enough of a haul to put us back into contention. We’d be selling low and teams would capitalize on that.
I think based on the fact that Pelley was texting him before the press conference and then goes on to say he thinks Auston is a foundational and generational player, it makes it sound like Auston wants to stay… not sure why the Leafs org would want Auston to leave. They’re probably doing everything they can to make him stay, especially after the shit show of his injury and everyone calling into question the culture and state of the Leafs. Having the captain and franchise leading goal scorer choose to walk looks even worse on them.
I think Auston himself would want to see if he can recover from his injury and get back some of his skill (under a new coach) before jumping ship. I can see him maybe choosing to go when his contract is up but not yet, unless he really isn’t happy with the new GM and (hopefully) new coach.
Why are we talking about this idea of having matthews be traded? Like fr
Matthews has already decided the future.
With his play.
What are the excuses going to be for all the people riding on Matthews clit when we don’t move past the first round for the remainder of his tenure ? Rebuild and that starts with getting rid of Matthews and getting someone who can perform.
If he decides he wants to leave, he’ll be gone right before the draft or on draft day itself.
He has an NMC. He’s as much the dog here as the team is.
Captain Awesome should make the president of MLSE first, if he wants to be the Prime Minister of Canada after me.
But but…. moy-chan-di-zing!
Whose face will they put on those chainz? Whose name will sell all those jerseys?
The pinto bean decides the taco
You can do that? Well shit all my worrying about McDavid staying in Edmonton is all for naught then.
At one time you asked Matthews but not anymore. He’s not as good anymore imo.
Found Austin Matthews’ agent’s burner account.
