We had some key pieces already. We drafted well and gor lucky (that the other did not draft well).

  2. Cornius_Jack

We didn’t tough. It actually started back in 2018 and was continued in 2022 after the Stanley Cup final with 2 solid different gm’s.

By 2022, they already had their future first line in the team. If they weren’t at least somewhat competitive 4 years later, something has gone wrong. With that said, hitting a homerun with Hutson definitely made them legit a bit sooner than anticipated.

Stanley Cup Finalists in 2021, dead last in 2022, top-5 in 2026 what the fuck is this black magic fuckery?

    Key elements:

    – Professional scouting has been spot on, they kept the right pieces and only flubbed on Dach (maybe Guhle’s contract is debatable, we’ll see). Carrier, Newhook, Matheson, Dobson, Heineman, those are all positive value moves by Hughes.
    – The economic conjecture was favorable with cap space being at an all-time premium. The Monahan trade tree is an anomaly lol
    – Blessed with a tremendously healthy balance sheet when Hughes took over, thanks to Bergevin’s very disciplined management. This multiplied how much we profited from the premium placed on cap space
    – Blessed with incredible growth from the main leftover pieces in Suzuki and Caufield, both exceeding expectations
    – Blessed with a first-ballot HOFer in Hutson, similar to snatching Kucherov in the middle of a rebuild
    – Absolutely fucking gutsy move to hire a pee-wee coach
    – Timing was good too – Boston, Toronto, Florida and Tampa are the four winningest teams between 2015-2025 and more likely to be exiting their window than to peak over the next little while
    – Excellent amateur scouting – Hutson, Fowler, Engstrom, Xhekaj, Hage, Demidov, Zharovky and Pickford all providing more value than what their expected pick position. And the guts to make the right call in drafting Slaf and waiting to draft Hutson, and the blessing of the draft Gods to allow us to pick frigging Demidov at 5th lol
    – And Suzuki’s role as a leader in this whole thing cannot be understated. In my opinion, the best captain in the league. It takes a special kind of person to withstand the pressure of being a Habs captain, and he’s not only managing it, he’s thriving. Only player in history to improve in seven consecutive seasons. Name 5 people in the world that would be better suited for this? I can’t find a single one.

Everyone saying that Suzuki and Caufield already being there doesnt count as a « full rebuild » isnt giving current management enough credit. For 1 they hire St Louis which could be one of the biggest reasons they are even in this spot. Do either of those players have this type of season without him? Also choosing to draft slaf over Cooley or wright. And a bunch of the other moves they made have been impressive.

  7. Gotta give credit to Bergy, Nick and Cole are the foundation to our success.

Inherited young talent like Suzuki (already on a discount deal), Caufield, Guhle, Kapanen, Dobes, Struble, Evans, Xhekaj (and Romanov).

Inherited great leaders like Anderson, Gallagher, Savard, and even Dvorak fits in this category.

Inherited really good NHLers in their prime on great contracts or RFA status to use as trade bait – Petry, Lehkonen, Toffoli, Chiarot.

Inherited about 12 picks as well, and added more. And due to Price and Weber’s careers ending suddenly, their first became a top 3 pick.

Inherited an already very tight, strong locker room, and very good competitive team culture.

**Kent Hughes has done FANTASTIC WORK since taking over**, I love our current management, but he also Inherited a very, very good hand from his predecessors.

I’m just immensely happy that our current management didn’t squander their very strong opportunity to **continue building** something incredibly special. If you look around the league, it doesn’t take much for one GM to completely ruin a franchise in a short amount of time.

**We’re very fortunate to have had many, many years of strong leadership in the front office. We are not where we are today without everything that was done and happened Summer of 2016 onward – even the small hiccups.**

The main reason it appears to be fast is because of players acquired by Bergevin.

Suzuki, Caufield, Kapanen, Evans, Anderson, Struble, Guhle, Xhekaj, Dobes and Montembeault.

I don’t know many rebuild with 9+ players from the past organization 5 years into their rebuild.

  10. Oracle-of-Guelph

The Leafs turned it around in only 2 years from 2015-2017

    ….Hahahahahahahaha

  11. Yes, Bergevin drafted some key pieces, but they might never have reached their potential under his regime. Caufield struggled under Ducharme, and without him thriving, Suzuki likely doesn’t blossom either. Plus, without the front office change, we don’t tank for Slafkovsky or hire Martin St-Louis.

People defending the Bergevin era forget that drafting is useless without development. We used to ruin good prospects because our development system was terrible. Hughes and Gorton actually brought in the right coaching and support staff to fix that, which is the main reason we are where we are today.

It has to be the fastest no? But I also wouldn’t say pulled off until we win the cup

  13. How about before we can talk about « pulling off a rebuild » we wait until we are at least true SC contenders. I’m sure Toronto thought they pulled a rebuild. Don’t get me wrong I love where this team is going but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

  14. Had no 13 and 14 already. Dobes and Kappanen in system and maybe most importantly still had all their picks and then some. Pick cupboard was full online most rebuilds that start with picks traded away. Bergie left full cupboards

  15. I think back to the day off that, according to their model, we were in a building rebuilding since 2018 – which is odd because of the unexpected cup run, but without COVID, I do not believe we would not have made it to the postseason in 2020 or 2021 based on our roster.

Drafting caufield at 15 was huge hes a top 10 pick we got in 2019. Getting prospect suzuki by trading a core player is something rebuilding teams will do. So in some ways we have been acting like a rebuilding team for a while before 2022 (outside of Dvorak trade which just showed MB didn’t have alot of vision)

BUt it makes we question was it fast or was it speed up because we were effectively already in an unacknowledged rebuild, that we only finally accepted in 2022?

  16. Assignment_General

I remember a few years ago people in this very sub doubting the rebuild, saying our top guys aren’t good enough. A lot has changed in a few years, and these guys are all becoming the best versions of themselves. It’s incredible and we as fans are lucky as hell.

  17. LPhilippeB

The rebuilt is going to be successful when we win a cup.
