You have to look at this season as bad coach, unlucky with health, poor roster management. The odds of the leafs being this bad again next year are slim if they can stay healthy and hire a coach who enjoys seeing the puck enter the opposing teams net. Are they a playoff team? Who knows, but they won’t be a bottom 5 team, considering how bad everything has gone this year and they still might not be a bottom 5 team

Steve, one thing you and a lot of people aren’t mentioning when it comes to tanking is that this years draft class is awesome and the next two project to be extremely weak. Next years projected first overall pick would be an 8th,9th,or 10th pick this year. This year, pick 5 has a high chance of being a franchise player. Next year, pick 5 has a high chance of never playing a game in the league. Go for the tank this year and let the next two years be what they may be. You’re better off succeeding with this year.

Hey Steve, do you think that the protection clause should be adjusted to bottom 5 in the standings (top 5 protected) and then even if the lottery pushes a team out it doesn't change how the protection works? Because the lottery is designed to protect against Tanking, however because it changes how the draft is run i feel the trade clauses need to be separated from the lottery.

With regards to retool as to a rebuild .
32 team each year prior to the start of a new season go through a retooling process.
Prior to the draft or at the draft teams make trades as part of their retooling process. .
When July 1st arrives they go through another retooling by trading or signing free agents . Into pre season
At the start of the season 32 have done some retooling for the top 16 playoff spots. Those 16 to 22 teams that done a good job to contend for one of the playoff spots might once again do another retooling for the playoff push ! And maybe to be a Stanley Cup contender once the regular season is over and the hunt for Lord Stanley's Cup.
A rebuild could start at the halfway part or by the 30 game mark because of how far they are out to contend for one of the 16 spots just to make the playoffs .
Teams that haven't blocked them selves to make necessary changes by too many NT NM NW CLAUSES over payed for players who are now slowing down prone to serious injuries where there value has demenoshed .
Call it retooling rebuild it has been going on for years but now that it is a hot mic sound bite fancier name that has been going on probably since the beginning of sports and time

Im in favour of the tank, just due to the defensive prospects in the top 5 this year. It could allow them to actually turn it around next season. If you give up that pick and next years and dont get a pick until 28 then you have to go full rebuild and trade everyone, but youre also kinda screwed because if you trade matthews and nylander and get first rounders in the deal, you are committing to being horrible for a few seasons and you don’t have your picks. So it’s either take a chance and try to turn it around now or commit to two years of pain before you can properly start a rebuild, during which time views and sales will drop drastically. Leaf fans are tired and this undecided path forward is doing nothing to help them. Fans just want a decision to be made either youre tearing it down or your trying to retool and be half decent again next year
