I love that you mentioned the system. I’ve been screaming it from the mountain top. This team is not built to play this system, get blown out game after game but we don’t change a thing. This isn’t new, they’ve sucked 5v5 all year and Gibby masked it with his play.
I like Larkin but I don't know if him being the captain is good for him or the team look at the way he played at the 4 Nations and the Olympics he was not the captain just wanted to play and was great and then you watch him after a complete stomping from the other team Detroit did nothing right and there is no fire in him it's like a child that just got in trouble I don't see any heart it's just like he wants to cry
Yes, so disappointed in the red wings players. I don’t see much effort from a majority of the team. They can’t get the puck out of their zone. Give away’s a majority of time in their zone and only a couple players can actually make a rush with the puck. Dump and chase, no one wants to shoot the puck. They went from beating some of the best teams in the league to not being able to beat anybody. Season will be over soon. They need to make a major change.
Nah the problem is honestly not just effort. Too many games we actually are trying like in the rangers game, they just suck. Genuinely they cannot score because they aren't good enough offensively. Do we really expect a line of rasmussen, kasper, and shine to score at all? Maybe kasper but we know offense is none of their primary games
i will point out the bertuzzi trade. although he overvalued himself at 6-7mil (as some reports claim), his try hard gritty play is what det is missing, AND his offensive production.
several good points made also the stupid lottery system hurt us several yrs in a row (not as a complete excuse, but been a factor….horrible luck) i predict we win the lottery 1st pick this yr, …..and we traded away our 1st pick Murphys law with this team but yes much more than jus bad luck bottom 6 or so players are terrible i got copp 4th line center at best Rassy gone compher gone, appleton gone kasper, gone i could see chariot on a 1 yr deal seider debrincat untouchable, larkin 2nd line car, kane agree 3rd line car 1 more yr we m need speed an offensive defenseman heart, passion, physicality i kinda still like Finnie but he has to improve next yr too bottom line is we jus aren't that good we need a superstar perron gone prob JVR gone although he chipped in nicely for awhile, shake it up , next yr good point on the PP coach dump him too many question marks on defense besides Seider, maybe Faulk, maybe edvinsson (who still makes defensive lapses, and for gods sake get more physical with that big body, johansson big ? mark docker? nygard give him a better chance can't get puck out of our zone long stretches, we overachieved the 1st half we lack talent, and heart a bad combo
Yzerman should make creative contractual moves to get Matthews. It’s clear the Leafs don’t like him, the fans don’t like him. I doubt Matthews wants to remain in Toronto being an American player, esp on the backend of the USA Olympic win. Get creative Yzerman. Wings need another top market center.
Larkin is like a prize fighter who has thrown too many punches. Do him a favor and trade him to a contender for a higher round draft pick. He sacrificed a lot for the Wings during the rebuilding years, but the air is out of his balloon. Patrick Kane as a player is another empty promise. Times up. That team needs to be gutted and rebuilt.
It seems I am the only one saying that we are NOT tough enough. The rangers out hit us yesterday. It seems every game we get out hit. We are a team full of PUSSIES!!!! Why doesn't Steve see this?!!!!
Wings need size and speed up front to mix in with Raymond, DeBrincat, Finnie. First line center needed, trade Larkin ( Mo gets the C) add another solid bigger D-man able to handle the puck in all situations especially PP. Work on team speed, physicality and cycling in O-zone, stop dump and chase mentality constantly increasing speed thru center of ice. Current team structure isn't able to compete consistently with this roster and it shows with many players at their max level of play.
While I think Coaching is part of the problem, when you were listing out the jerseys at 15 mins ish – it really starts to set in how little talent our team has. Our bottom 2 lines would be bad lines on a tanking Vancouver team. Our top 2 lines would be a 3rd and 4th on most competing teams.
Larkin is a solid 2C, he's being treated like a generational talent in Detroit because we have no one else.
Cat is our only guy that is likely a 2nd liner or better on almost all playoff rosters save for a few.
Yzerman, who I have idolized since I was 5 watching him in the 90s, has built a weak team. Outside of a few solid drafts (Sieder, Ray) he hasn't really done anything to add REAL talent. He's holding prospects that are AT BEST future 2nd/3rd liners and avoiding big trades. Point to a team in the playoff picture and I can list a SUPERSTAR (or multiple) on each of them.
Hell, Buffalo has Thompson and Dahlin.
Our closest is Sieder and that's only defensively – and when your team can't score the defensive aspect doesn't matter as much. Pretty hard to win every game 1-0
After that embarrassing performance yesterday against a non playoff team, ya I'd say they have given up. When lidstrom and zetterberg retired the wings have never looked the same.
The fact they haven't held a players only meeting to address their play tells me either the leadership in the room is non-existent or the team just doesn't care enough to address it
I believe management is at the top of the blame. They have a whole off season to come up with a plan and determine who fits and who doesn’t. I want to believe Todd is an upgrade from the previous coach. I want to believe that we are a better team but what has been showing the last couple games I don’t have any words for it. If my coach called us out and we didn’t respond the following game we have something going on behind the scenes in the locker room. If I can’t get my guys going as a coach or a captain then we have major problems especially this late in the season. I’m just a fan I am no professional on managing a team or franchise. I’m upset just like other redwings fans.
Lots of people aren't going to like it but Larkin is a 2nd or 3rd line center on any other team in a playoff race. He clearly doesn't have that next gear to motivate the team at crunch time. NOW,, he isn't the only issue. We have lots of things to fix and dead weight contracts to unload. One player doesn't make or break the team. BUT,, you have to be able to motivate the locker room when it really counts. That is NOT happening even with a totally different type of coaching. The Trust fund kids and Yzerman also needs to be held accountable. Could not agree more about Alex Tanguay. How much more soft, unmotivated PK and uncreative PP do we need to see to recognize that his special teams does not work? Predictable garbage.
Hate to say it but when Mike illitch died,so a did the budget and willingness to spend on good players. We have the money and cap space, but it seems like they don't want to spend
Toward the end, you got to my only criticism of Yzerman. He overvalues the guys he's drafted. Package up ANY of these guys: Danielson, Kasper, Mazur, Cossa, Shine, MBN, ASP, Leonard, whoever. Now, don't let them go for nothing but, if someone is eyeing one or more of them, do the deal! I would have pulled the trigger on Edvinsson to get Hughes. Hell yeah. What makes him untouchable? It ain't his stellar play.
Everyone is hating on stevie. I've said this on other videos and have had no responses. I'll say it again. He said he was building a team to compete for a wild card spot. That's what they're doing! Knowing this I would expect he has plans for the future. Everyone keeps saying it's been 10 years. Not with him it hasn't. It will be 6 years on the 19th
Frustrating for sure, no question. In my opinion, there are several obvious issues. Injuries, Larkin is nowhere near a 100%, and probably should not be on the ice. I don’t think Simon is healthy, as the physical part of his game has been missing. Raymond does not appear healthy, as he continually stays on the outside. Depth is a huge issue, as well as youth. I would prefer to bring up the kids and let them learn on the fly-but you have to have a coach who can teach and mold guys into full time NHLers. I like Todd, but a.Coach can only motivated guys so much We need grit and fight, and some serious attitude to stop putting up with BS and cheap shots all over the ice.
We had many things not working now that worked earlier in the season. You can put whatever system you want in place but if they don’t care nothing will work.
I genuinely don’t understand our draft strategy after the Raymond year. Why year after year are we drafting guys with a low ceiling? I’m so tired of nice guy that tries hard and will slot in on your third line
They’re disgusting and they are as soft as Liberace at the Playboy mansion. I’m 62 years old I could beat one of them up in a fight. They’re weak soft and Larkin is not a leader.
“I’m not an NHL coach…” Buddy, I’ve been saying McLellan isn’t since the hiring. Go off, man, no one else in the org knows what’s happening either. That said, this roster isn’t talented enough to play a more robust system, hence Todd’s feel good “just play hockey” approach. The team just isn’t that skilled to score 5on5 in this league. The way certain fans have wholesale swallowed what amounts to marketing about the rebuild instead of preserving a healthy suspicion is on them. There hasn’t been a single draft prospect that actually projected to be a top 10 player because the franchise failed to win the lottery. So the plan was to build down the roster and make up the lack of elite in the aggregate. This only works if you actually over-develop those players with a deep, comprehensive system (like Boston maintained for a decade) so they plug and play as the veterans rotate out. It has failed. Simple as.
The roster Yzerman has assembled was clearly good enough to hold a playoff spot for the majority of the season. Yet here we are.
To me it's obvious there's something else going on and although I don't accuse Larkin of being a bad player, you have to wonder if he's part of a group that gives up when things look dark. What bothers me the most is that he was sobvocal about not adding at last year's deadline. Since then the team has gotten better goaltending, an influx of young guys and two solid guys at this deadline and he still looks sad in interviews. Doesn't strike me as the kind of person who motivates his teammates
First time coming across your channel and this is the best most honest Red Wings content I’ve ever listened to. Literally agree with everything you stated. Just subscribed!
It's a problem when: (1) you acquire finesse players who are not elite skill players; (2) you acquire large-framed players who are not particularly tough; (3) you acquire players who lack finesse and toughness and who are basically mediocre serviceable players; (4) your AHL team is a good squad but offers no potential elite players. Time to part ways with our good players from the past (Yzerman, Draper, Maltby, Cleary, Fischer, Wallin, et al)
22:39 “they got better every year” no. No they haven’t. Their team metrics and actual performance has not improved. They won more games, which is not the same as the team improving. No need to sunk-cost this. If the team sucks, fire the people responsible for building the sucky team. 27:14 😂picking Jason Robertson, a slow skating left winger, when the entire prospect pool is chock full of slow, scoring left wingers is reeeeeeeeeeally funny.
I think a problem is honestly on the defensive side. They have goal scorers. They have a goalie in Gibson who can save games. However, This is where it's rocky. Defense. Goalies getting peppered with shots, no backup on rebounds. We could say rebound control, but a lot of the recent goals have been guys not covered. We need that defense on every line to make things happen, break plays out etc. Detroit isn't there yet.

Larkin is not a motivating captain. every year he needs a vacation in late feb early march
Hmmm, no mention of Lombardi…
I love that you mentioned the system. I’ve been screaming it from the mountain top. This team is not built to play this system, get blown out game after game but we don’t change a thing. This isn’t new, they’ve sucked 5v5 all year and Gibby masked it with his play.

EXACTLY what I thought last night. They care less than their fans do. Faulk is great, and is a positive, but this team has no marbles… or heart.
Strip the C from Larkin because he motivates nobody.
no, saved you 20 minutes

ken holland maybe?

Half this team looks more focused on their kids than winning a cup. Which is fine, but we won't win a cup lol.

When showing up to work seems pointless. Welcome to the world most of the rest of us live😂 in
Ras is actually one of our most valuable players in the bottom 6.
Depth Center, team friendly contract, great on the PK and more offensive talent then most the bottom 6.
Consistently asked to play with terrible linemates and do whats right for the team, and does.
He'd flourish the same way Soderblom did with a change of scenery. Appreciate him while hes here.
“Screw these guys for giving me hope and taking it away.” I know, that’s the job of the Lions.😂
Soft, so fucking soft
We had many things not working now that worked earlier in the season. You can put whatever system you want in place but if they don’t care nothing will work.

other teams stepped it up a notch for the playoff push and the Wings did not. I have no expectation that the Wings will make it.
