  1. He’s right.

This is an EVERYTHING issue. It’s roster construction. It’s amateur and pro scouting. It’s coaching. It’s player performance. No edge, no toughness. No reckless abandon. It is literally everything. There is no tinkering or quick fix. This is a major, five-alarm situation that requires massive moves and restructuring. No hope for a lottery pick this year. No goal scoring in the AHL to supplement the lack of scoring in the NHL. This franchise is literally stuck.

A few more guys like McCarty and this team would be so much better. People hate the Panthers but they have guys who will fight and give a fuck.

Detroit….has apathy right now and that’s a difficult to fix.

  3. IWantAMiataPls

We need new on-ice leadership. McLennan is doing everything he can to get these guys motivated. I wouldn’t mind a change in direction from the front office either as much as it hurts my heart to say.

  4. theouter_banks

100% How old is Dmac now? I’d rather have him out there for these last few than some of the boys at the moment.

  5. This is what happens when you litter your staff with former players. It’s reminding me more and more of the “Michigan Man” crap.

We need to look outside of the org at every level.

  6. ThickBootyEnjoyer

This is an on ice leadership issue. Steve can’t motivate players to play when the culture sucks and the captain folds in the second half of the season. Todd is calling it out, and the same problem existed before him. who is whining and folding season after season, Larkin. New leadership is needed, period.

  7. dylanisbored

everyone is saying something different so I want to clarify that I am right. What we need is to get ride of JVR, Perron, Appleton, rass, and get guys who can check and fight or score, right now those players don’t score or bring grit and are just straight up useless, a 2c would go along way too. They also might need a new pp coach.

  8. BootyUnlimited

Watching Kane play defensively or back check is just painful. He trots around like he doesn’t have a care in the world, zero hustle most of the time.

  9. Hot take: Anthony Mantha played with an edge and was willing to drop the gloves. Tyler Bertuzzi was a scraper too. Was that Bert/Larkin/Mantha line really that bad? maybe we shoulda kept em…

  10. PenguinRhin0

The problem is we don’t have any heart. I ain’t talking about skill players. I’m talking about McCarty, Draper, Maltby, Dandenault, Kocur, Lapointe, Holmstrom, Cleary, Doug Brown, Jamie Macoun, etc…

    Those guys brought it.

  11. ExuDeCandomble

The only issue is that Detroit needs a couple more top 6 forwards, and namely an elite center. There’s no reason to question the rest of it. Without those pieces, this was never a playoff team. People need to chill the fuck out, including my man DMac. I love the guy, but this roster ain’t the one he played with.

  12. Bitter_Stock7811

Yzerman benefited from guys willing to bleed for him. Dmacs grind line, Probert, Kocer., This team has nothing and they are slow.

  13. togetherwem0m0

rich boy hockey is ok with being losers and getting paid. mccarty came from nothing, yzerman came from nothing. times have changed and this lot was raised in a different world and a different way. no competitive edge.

  14. TechnoVikingGA23

D-Mac is missing what a lot of people are though, the Winged Wheel doesn’t mean anything anymore. It’s been nearly 20 years since we were relevant in the playoffs and we aren’t a contender anymore. The younger players in the NHL don’t care about our history because we haven’t had any in their lifetime. They want to go play places with nice weather and low/no taxes. Detroit isn’t a draw anymore, the jersey doesn’t mean anything to these guys now.

Crackhead outside Dollar General yells at things

  16. Frylock_91

Trade Larkin or take the C away until someone steps up to lead.

  17. doubeljack

There are some players who are elevating their game and trying to drag the team into the playoffs. They aren’t the problem. As far as I’m concerned everyone else is a piece we can move, although it is going to be very difficult to make trades in the current landscape.

  18. magikarp-sushi

What darren says here are echoes and reverberations of every cup winning team and every loss he and the competitors around him faced.

  19. notgoodatthese

Feels.like they would rather play golf then make the playoffs

  20. notgoodatthese

A front of tje net presence would be nice. Our guys always seem to be off to the side letting the goalie get a clear look at the shooter/puck

  21. He really didn’t say anything we didn’t know. I’m not sure why we’re even talking about this particular clip TBH.

  22. DrDanthrax99

If I see nothing else this offseason, I would want to see a true 1C be acquired and move Larkin down to 2C, a true top 4D so Seider and Edvinsson aren’t 95% of the defensive corps, and Rasmussen put on the next Artemis mission to the moon and left there.

  23. Fuzzy-Condition2469

I remember in Kris Drapers last year he called out the teams effort saying your disrespecting the guys that came before you wearing this jersey. We don’t have anyone in this room like that anymore

  24. philabuster_60

I agree change is needed, first thing is ban all ambulance chasers from TV advertising

  25. Do we have to many former players managing this team? It didn’t work for the Islanders and Oilers in the past. Great players doesn’t mean great management. I’m not pointing fingers at anyone in particular. We need people who are better at evaluating players. My opinion of course.

  26. xLazyMuhamedx

Larks is a nerd. Need less nerds and more killers.

  27. As we saw with the Lions after trading Stafford, the Wings might just need to make some drastic changes to reset the culture. Whether that is Yzerman or someone else and when is TBD, but that seems to be the next best option if done correctly.
