[Drance] Les Canucks semblent pencher vers le repêchage de Chase Reid s’ils tombent au 3e rang du classement général – ils ne font actuellement pas pression pour prolonger Buium ou Ohgren à long terme cet été.

Not gonna happen cause we getting 1st overall right ?

The more I look into the draft, the more convinced that Reid is the pick at 3rd. The number 1 defining trait for elite 1D in this era is being an elite skater. Hughes, Makar, Werenski, Hutson, etc are all known for being phenomenal skaters, and Reid is probably the best skating defenseman in the draft while still being big and having a great offensive toolkit

  3. Tough-Application373

I do think that Reid and Buium have very similar profiles but the scouts have seemed pretty clear these past few months that Reid has separated himself above Verhoeff, so ultimately the team should take the best player available.

  4. Sarcastic__

Don’t really hate either Reid or Verhoeff at 3.

And yeah, they’re not in any hurry to do anything with Buium this summer. If he wants to extend for 8 years at a number they’re chill with, sure. No reason to force it though since he has 1 more year on his ELC.

  5. Not opposed. Verhoeff stock seems to be falling as of late

  6. FragrantReport4171

Glad they are notextending ZB yet. Let’s see what kind of juice he has next year. Paying good players lots of money is fine. Paying average players lots of money is not

  7. ggpurplecobras

Nothing wrong with either of these things. Reid is absolutely in the conversation for 3, and Buium/Ohgren havent shown enough for the organization to be comfortable extending at some of the rumored numbers (9mill AAV for Buium) long term. Give it one more year, if they impress, pay a little more long term and lock them in.

  8. I would much rather swing for the home run than end up with an Ekblad

  9. 00Makerin00

Whenever the Canucks do any type of drafting, I’m always scared lol

Next years draft is very center heavy, centers typically take less time to hit the NHL after drafting, defense takes longer. This year is a defense heavy draft obviously after 1-2 with few centers in the top (apart from Malhotra or Viggo).

I like best player available and we will know more if Malhotras playoff performance become undeniable.

Third seems to be between Reid and Malhotra for me. Perhaps Carols as well in that 3rd overall slot.

  11. LingonberryNew1507

This is fine, nice to see the « if » as if 3rd wasn’t guaranteed.

  12. Radiant_Sherbert7272

Chase Reid from the highlights I’ve seen and from the stuff I’ve read has the chance to be a franchise level defenseman. He would be a great addition if Vancouver falls to third.

  13. housesoftheholy1

Does sjs accept 3rd overall for misa? Or buium for misa 1 for 1?

  14. Tbh, I don’t think it really makes sense to give Buium like 8 years x 9 mil per, he just hasn’t shown enough

You’re not even getting big savings at that point… Like, lets say Buium gets 40 points in 82 games next year, he’d probably still come in at around 9 mil and it’s less of a risk because you know he can improve

Luke Hughes got 7 years at 9 mil per last summer but he had back to back 47 & 44 point seasons… Buium has 24 points this year for reference

I don’t know why were giving Buium the same $$ as Hughes when he hasn’t shown nearly as much, shit he hasn’t even produced half of what Hughes did.

If Buium is willing to do 7 mil per at 8 years, that’s worth talking about. But at 9 mil? No way, there’s no point for the Canucks

  15. I doubt very many people here are watching the NCAA, CHL or the European development leagues. At best they’re watching clips and highlights.

So I don’t think anyone should have a very strong opinion compared to the scouts that actually do watch the games.

  16. ScarvesOnGiraffes

You can’t really take this as gospel. Drance himself said on his own pod a while back that he doesn’t put any stock into what teams that have a realistic chance of picking at that number say, as it could easily be smoke and mirrors. It definitely makes sense that they would be interested though as he seems to be trending towards consensus lately.

  17. Skipbrunch

I can’t help but think if Allvin did not auction 1st rounder picks like he worked for the antique roadshow and the team had some high end forwards in the system this would not be such an issue.

Top 5 picks who are forwards are more often than not perennial 30 goal scorers. If you are going to take Reid above Malhotra you better be VERY SURE Reid’s roof is exponentially higher.

The Columbus Blue Jackets ended up in spots where they kept taking the best player(s) available and now they have one of the best d-core’s in the league filled with forwards who are nothing more than above average.

  18. Another American star to abandon Canada in 5 years. No thanks.

  19. he also said management is exploring trading 2nd+3rd round picks for younger players…..this organization.. they never learn

Liam Ohgren, I wouldn’t mind extending, that’s part of the Hughes trade. High value player. Buium can get Tyler Myers contract. He hasn’t shown enough to get that insane deal, everyone is talking about. Chase Reid, I’d have to look him up, just hope he’s Canadian. By the sounds of it, it might be. I don’t think with the recent history of Americans come here, we can be getting another one and thinking it’s different.

  21. I think it’s a mistake to not lock up Buium now on a sweetheart deal before his value inflates. He’s got lower totals than he’s likely to get in most seasons because of how bad the team is. He’s 20 years old and the cap is going to rise a lot in the coming seasons.

Lock him up on max term and in 4-5 year when the team is actually a playoff squad he’ll be one of the best value contracts for a top pairing D in the entire league.

In the cap era you need some insane bang for buck deals to win the cup.

Being 3OA is one of the worst positions really. And this perfectly sums up being a Canucks fan.

The tier 1 is just McKenna and Stenberg.

Then tier 2 is Reid, Verhoeff and Malholtra. All 3 guys have the same chance of being a franchise player. Whoever is picking 5OA is really lucky.

That said, I am fine with Reid. I don’t think anyone at 3OA is truly a clear cut above the rest. Verhoeff has been sitting at rankings in 3rd for the majority of the season and he has all the tools of being a big RHD #1 all situations guy.

Malholtra and Reid are obvious risers, but I have all 3 tied.

  23. joetothejack

I live in London and had the opportunity to watch Reid dominate the Knights last round. Hes a beast, wicked shot, very fast without effort, excellent Edgewood and is a big boy.

He also plays menacingly, getting under the Knights skin and also the fans lol. Not sure if theres a clip around but in one of the games, he was in the box and covered the camera with his stick to annoy the fans.

  24. coltonjeffs

Reid is the right choice at 3 as long as the first 2 are as predicted

  25. Flintydeadeye

The only reason to sign Buium now is to get 8 years. He’s not willing to sign right now with the cap going up

  26. On the basis of them drafting another stud D prospect, agree that they shouldn’t extend Buium long term just yet. You have to identify your “guy” and give him the big contract. Everyone falls in line behind that.

  27. Can we just take a break from drafting American players???

  28. indianasparta

I like Verhoeff at 3 still. Reid is great but Verhoeff is in another bracket . Huge size and barely 18 . Plus was one of the top performers in the NCAA as one of the youngest players . Do not sleep on Verhoeff this is the long term play .

  29. Take Verhoff the Canadian.

We just had two American Olympic caliber players walk out on us. Hearing people complain about Stenberg being a swede, but then hearing suggestions of drafting Reid (American) over Verhoff (Western Canadian) is just wild.

Chase Reid is literally from where Quinn Hughes is from. Like no thank you, let’s not do this again.

  30. Ministerofgoons

I still lean towards Verhoeff at 3rd, but I’m sure Reid would be a fine option too.

Disappointed to hear the Club isn’t seriously pursuing long term extensions this summer with our young guns who have serious potential. That sort of out of the box thinking is what rebuilding teams need if they are to progress into real contender status when/if they come out the other end of the rebuild, imo. I remember when people thought the Sens were batshit crazy for signing Stutzle & Sanderson to their 8 year deals when they did. Those are probably the best long term deals in the league right now. I understand being hesitant about Ohgren, but not Buium.

  31. NecessaryDeparture75

It genuinely feels like the Canucks and the fans have just come to terms with drafting third overall.

  32. WeVeeReality

Matthew Schaefer is 18 years old.

The Islanders let him play now, this season. Now, because he’s so good, they’re right back in the mushy middle again just outside of a playoff spot.

Our team, at least if you want a cup, needs to tank and tank hard… for at least two seasons. I do not want to rush even our #1 prospect onto the ice for short term gains. It sucks for the player, but for the franchise I hope we marinate our top players before they hit the big time.

It’s a fine progression path. It just requires simple patience.

I was today years old when I learned « probabilistically » was a word

  34. DepressionMakesJerks

Wat I mean obvs we they know more than we do but wat the fk 😂😂

  35. OnionSad6134

I would also be on board with that, although I dont think they give a fuck what I think lol.

  36. Beneficial__Meat

Here me out. If we get 3rd, we try to send it to the Blues for 8th and 15th

  37. RefrigeratorAble2853

For someone new to NHL – how is it that the last place team is most likely to get third last pick?

  38. Chiskey_and_wigars

Drafting a Damn would be moronic, drafting an American would be annoying but not as bad as a Swede

People are speculating $9m for Buium, that absolutely cannot happen unless he becomes a 100 point guy and a defensive maestro next season so we need another season to say « Listen kid, you’re a 30 point 2nd line D who needs to develop, take a 4×4 and prove yourself »

Öhgren was absolute dogshit until he got here, so I’d like to see another year of play before we commit anything more than league minimum to the guy

  39. Reid stock rising. I was big on Keaton but it seems the race for third is narrowing.

  40. imfeelingquitehansry

The comments dismissing Reid solely because he’s American are crazy. Hughes left because the Canucks were a terrible team that had no chance of competing for the cup in his prime years, not because he’s American. Elsewhere, for every Matthew Tkachuk there’s a Connor Hellebuyck. It’s a complete myth that American players are fleeing Canada.

Closing off draft options for stupid unempirical reasons are a great way to ensure the rebuild fails and that future Canucks players, regardless of nationality, choose to leave for actual contenders.
