  1. Seems to me like the kings are less trying to bring the game into OT and more being BROUGHT into OT by the opposing team because they can't keep a lead. They are just defensively in a rough place right now. I think they get a lead and say hey let's lock this down and play defensively/Turtle not realizing they don't have the defensive chops to weather the onslaught. I don't think they're nefariously bringing things to OT just to get a point and to squeak through into the playoffs.

  2. I say 5-4-3-2-1 point system
    5 points for regulation win
    4 points for OT win
    3 points for SO win
    2 points for SO loss
    1 point for OT loss

  3. I despise the 3-2-1 system, because I cannot stand the idea that an OT win somehow matters less than a regulation win.

If we’re gonna change it, I hope for 2 points for all wins, 0 for all losses, 1 for each time for tying after OT. No shootout. I doubt that would ever happen, but I like that way more than 3-2-1.

  4. I'd go even tougher, 3pts for a regulation win 1 for an overtime win and 0 for an overtime loss (make the OT's 7 minutes) and dump the shoot outs all together. Giving a team an extra point is just like having a tie sort of defeats the purpose.

  5. Nothing wrong, I like the current points system, if you are the fan of a weak team it keeps you alive in the season longer. I would be very disappointed if they ever changed it. 3-2-1 I could live with, but I would never want just plain wins and losses. It would widen the gap between the top and bottom sides

  6. Kuemper was never the same after Rantanen hit him in the head. Kopitar had his struggles early after being injured at the beginning of the year. Byfield has been a point per game player the last 15 games, the coaching was the issue. The defense has been bad and Clarke needs to be playing 25 minutes a night, Anderson-Doughty should be a third pairing on a contending team and Ceci-Dumoulin need to be launched into the sun.

  7. As a fan of an east team, I wouldn't pay to see my team play the kings . They're not entertaining or worth the money to see anymore. No superstars in their prime. Just a middling team living on loser points.

  8. I'm surprised by this take from a very knowledgeable hockey person. As a Kings fan, I have to say that the Kings are a bad team. There're just too many issues there: inconsistent goal tending, shaky D-men (Ceci at 4.5 M for 4 years? Really?), lack of center depth…
However, to say that the Kings may get in the playoffs because of the current point system is just wrong.
If we go with the 2-1-0 point system like before and get rid of OT and SO, the Kings would have a record of 19W-41T-17L for 79 points, the Ducks would have a record of 24W-22T-32L for 70 points. The Kings would be in 3rd place by a mile right now.

The Pacific standing would be: Vegas 87 pts, Edmonton 82 pts, LA 79 pts, Seattle 74 pts, Anaheim 70 pts, San Jose 70 pts, Calgary 69 pts, Vancouver 47 pts.

  9. Kings are absurd. But here are some other total OT games, as of April 8th, for other teams. There were a bunch more with 19, but I only listed those with 20 or more.
    LA – 32

    Philadelphia – 27

    Minnesota – 27

    Montreal – 24
    Columbus – 24

    Vegas – 24

    Dallas – 23

    Pittsburgh- 23

    Toronto – 23

    Boston – 22

    Anaheim – 22

    Chicago – 21

    Carolina – 20
    Detroit – 20
    Nashville – 20

While LA is clearly above the rest, I'd argue they're not the only offender.

  10. I think the kings are good this season not a top team but still good enough for the playoffs they're only 5 points away from leading the division

  11. Kings fan here and I hate to be this kind of fan but the Kings absolutely cannot make the playoffs…. They just flat out aren't good enough and have no business being in the playoffs. The Kings need a top 10 pick MUCH more than they need another 1st round exit in the playoffs.

  12. 19 regulation wins through 77 games played so far. That's just abysmal. Comically bad. They would be nowhere near the playoff line without the loser point.

  13. Kings fan here. Agree with all. In our defense, having Kevin, Kuzy and Armi out after the break was challenging though our young guns are working hard and of course…breadman. I had to giggle during your rant bc we feel the pain of all the OT as well. I was at the 8 round shootout and didn’t get home until midnight. So disappointing and exhausted at work the next day. I’m praying for better coaching to see how “great” this team really is. Sometimes it does seem like you hate us, but I understand. Maddening.

  14. Thank you for all the awesome and informative videos! You are one of the most knowledgeable hockey guy period! My honest question to you is Should the Kings Fire Luc Robitaille and get both a new president and coach and who do you think will be the best fit for both positions! Thank you!

  15. Inconsistency is the keyword of this season. Inconsistency in the lines, inconsistency in the coaching, inconsistency in the level of play, and way too much inconsistency in the goaltending. I do not know what the key is to change that but I'm hoping that with Kopi leaving it will force enough change that we see something that is different. For the past 4 years they have said they only need to make little tweaks and it has amounted to nothing. Thank you for this in depth look, I think the Kings (and many teams in the west) just get written off as "bad" and ignored.

  16. As a preds fan who wants to make the playoffs. The only team of the three man race capable of challenging Colorado is LA. Mostly because I can trust them to get a game to OT where anything can happen. Nashville isn’t consistent enough and Sharks are too young. We’d both likely get swept.

  17. Kings have just been secretly playing playoff hockey this whole time 😆 If they sneak into the playoffs and go on a run its going to be very funny to see just angered confusion be met with a shrug by the league.

  18. I think if there is a penalty for retreating in OT, it should be the red line.

In 5 on 5 teams retreat from the zone to retain possession. Be weird to penalize that

  19. I hate the loser point when it benefits another team. I love the loser point when it benefits my team!🤣

  20. A big part of Byfield not having more points is Hiller's system. The Kings have 3 or 4 players who would have way more points if they were on just about any other team.

  21. Seeing as how the Kings were ranked nearly at the bottom defensively at the time of Hillers release, his style of defense first was clearly not working. The Kings are no longer that team that most teams hated playing against. Now the fact that DJ still has them working on the mindset of strong defensive plays will lead to more offensive opportunities. Umm yeah nope. As of late, the Kings seem to be able produce a little more offensively. But the fact that DJ is still enforcing that defense first agenda, it seems like all the Kings are making these untimely errors. I think the Kings could be good playing like a Jets/Avs type hockey with a normal defensive structure. Not that shutdown style anymore. And please someone help Byfield recognize that he is this huge player the likes of like Lindros, being able to either steamroll, overpower or finesse his way around the hockey rink.

  22. As a Kings fan, I have very mixed feelings about them making the playoffs. I want Kopi to get one last shot, and playoff hockey is the best. That said, I feel like they need to miss in order for the FO to see that the systems need to change, and that DJ Smith isn’t the guy.

  23. I'm a Kings fan and I completely agree we don't belong in the playoffs. I genuinely hope we don't make it, I know it'd be nice to make it for Kopi but we need to take this team in a different direction. Maybe not blow it up completely but it's getting close to the stage where we're gonna need a full rebuild or there'll be a chance we're stuck in the middle of the pack for a very long time. We shouldn't, as a club, want that in my opinion.

  24. You mentioned the 2012 team. I think the big difference between that team and this one is the D- core. Guys like Scuderi and Greene were MUCH more reliable than Dumolin and Ceci. Edmunson benefits by playing with Clarke which is hilarious, as Clarke was put there to benefit from Ed originally. Doughty is a MUCH slower player than he was back then. Alec Martinez was better than Mikey Anderson. Drewiskie was a better 7th than Moverare. Add the fact the system was better, coach was tougher, and you had a young Quick in net rather than and old Kuemper, you could see the 2012 team making a run.

This team does not have the swagger or drive that 2012 team had. There has to be a major shift in team culture and drive for the Kings to have any chance. It's the intangible that wins cups many times and this team doesn't have it. If they can just throw all caution to the wind and JUST PLAY AGGRESSIVE HOCKEY, then MAYBE something could happen. Stranger things….right? Just my thoughts. Great video though!

  25. I just had a crazy idea. What if there's a cap on points gained from OTL? Maybe this will encourage players to will games in regulation. If we have to keep this current model anyways.
