  1. They will likely be a bad team again, maybe not bottom 3 but probably still bottom 6. That said I could see the rangers rebounding next year, the blackhawks taking a step and the sharks taking a step. If the flames maintain their work ethic they will likely not be the worst team in the league and their goalies raise their floor

  2. Our goaltending is simply too good for us to genuinely tank. It took genuinely *awful* team defense for us to pull off that start to the season. We’ve been just average since then and that’s enough for Cooley and Wolf to post solid / borderline elite numbers.

I think next season we are probably back to the lower end of the mushy middle. Think New York Islanders – they have obvious roster issues but their goalie is just so damn good that they can’t help but be competitive. Next season we’ll be around where they are, with Parekh getting a proper season as our PP quarterback, and a full season of Gridin.

That’s why this draft is going to be massively important for us, we probably aren’t getting another solid shot at winning the lottery.

I have cautious optimism. Weve been hot down the stretch, have amazing goaltending, and are in an absolute shit division, with 2 of the 3 playoff teams seemingly on the decline. Griddy looks nasty, Frost looks much improved and the blue line isnt as bad as youd think after losing Ras and Weegs. Obviously we dont have the most talent, but if Parekh, Frost, and Gridin all take another step forward, along with supporting cast like coronato, zary, I could see us making a run at the playoffs.

I feel that if we don’t get a top forward in each of the next two drafts we are doomed for mediocrity.

You could argue that our goaltending is set for the foreseeable future, our defense needs to develop, but we have a few good pieces and can fill in the rest.

Our forwards, well we have a bunch of middle/bottom 6, but in my opinion no one is projecting as a top line player.

  5. Republic-Of-OK

With the exits this year and no immediate replacements/plan to replace them, we should be in a similar place next year. Bottoming out this year has been a big focus, but when you look around at our competition for the draft lottery, we should be finishing pretty close to the bottom- certainly bottom ~5-7 the next 2-3 years.

We already have a great pipeline, so if we get a bonafide star this year, and potentially 1-2 more the next couple years, we’ll be in a great spot going forward.

  6. UrbaneBoffin

A proper rebuild takes many years of being bad. It is in their best interest to be near the bottom of the league again.

  7. Probably a bottom 5 team. But we do have lots of players who could take significant steps. Coronato, Zary, gridin, Parehk, bruz, and who knows who in the pipeline shines. Also wolf and Cooley could be the best goalie duo in the league any year. So there are definitely chances for some surprises

  8. DanTheMan-WithAPlan

Fingers crossed they are near the bottom to get some more good players in the next draft.

Definitely picking top 10 next season. I’d imagine we look to trade Coleman, and likely Frosty gets moved at the deadline if people are paying a first+ for a 3C for the cup run.

Our youngsters need to get experience and this is how they get it.

  10. Master-Defenestrator

It’s highly likely that they will be bottom feeder next year. Even assuming both Gridin and Parekh make big strides next year; the team doesn’t have the depth or high-end skill to realistically challenge for the play-offs. This is especially true of the right side of the defence. Parekh, Brzustewicz, Mews and co. make the future of RD bright, but asking them to fill the gap of Weegar/Andersson next year is a massive ask. Most of the high-end prospects are not ready for NHL competition, and management is unlikely to fill the skill gap with FAs. My expectations is that they’ll finish in the bottom quarter of the league.

Long term this is probably a good thing. The Flames still lake a center who can project as a 1C and still have gaps to fill at LD and RW in the system.

This of course could all be wrong if Wolf gets hot and Cooley stays hot next season. I really hope they don’t go on a PDO bender next year though. This team isn’t ready to open a competition window yet not even close. I’m still weary of this ownership jumping the gun on an rebuild due to an overperforming season.

  11. I hope so. I do not want to rush this. Our drafting and development team is nothing short of elite. Let them cook. Let fools rush in, we can be patient for a couple seasons.

  12. MrLuv2poop

Bottom 5 and that is a good thing. Ideal we pick top 3 again. Next year’s draft is deep in centres and some elite ones in the top end.

Best interest long term for us to stink again at least for one more year and accumulate as many picks as we can

  13. Chemical_Signal2753

The Flames will not try to be bad but they won’t do much to improve. The roster we have at the end of the season will (more or less) be the roster at the start of training camp. Some pending UFAs will leave the team, and some prospects will earn a roster spot, but Conroy isn’t going to make any big moves in trade or free agency.

How the team performs will depend on the coach and players. This roster is good enough to make a push for the playoffs in the dysfunctional Pacific Division, but is more likely to finish bottom 10 in the league.

There is a high likelihood of players like Coleman, Strome, Frost, Farabee, Whitecloud, Maata, and Hanley being traded before the deadline but a few might be extended to short term contracts. If Conroy can get a 1st/2nd round draft pick and a decent prospect, and these players are unlikely to sign on terms Conroy finds acceptable, he is extremely likely to do that.

The 2027 offseason is likely where the Flames will pivot. At that point I could see Conroy explicitly looking for help for the roster. I wouldn’t expect him to go big game hunting, but he could pick up some younger veterans will established performance.

This is a hilarious comparison graphic lol. Shout out backlund though he’s having a good season

  15. kobedziuba

Yeah I’d imagine we are in line for another rough year. But this year had tons of positives so from a fan perspective a good season.

  16. The-Reddit-Giraffe

If we get McKenna or Stenberg we’ll be much better

If not I’d say bottom 5 but not really dead last

  17. I think flames will make a push to become a winning team. They will surprise everyone and with some teams falling out of their primes they could very well make playoffs. As a flames historian when flames are most doubted its obvious they will top the division and then bottom out first round playoffs.

  18. It’s funny that this is the graphic you chose, as it REALLY makes the case for rebuild. Miro, Robo, and Otter all came out of a 2017 draft class after Dallas missed the playoffs. It was also the same year that Colorado did their rapid rebuild that scored them Makar.

Flames current draft capital could mean legitimately great things if their scouting is on it.

  19. I think we’ll be in the mix for a wildcard spot. The goalies are too good and let’s say the kids take a step and if we get stenberg or mckenna, I can see the team 4-6 points out of a wildcard spot by this time next year

  20. klondike16

I think a bottom 5 team is likely. We don’t really have anyone on the roster that will help us take a step forward as I think our young guys are still a year or two away

  21. Local-Cauliflower945

Maybe mckenna can drag us like celebrini is doing to the sharks

  22. lokimotion

Given how terrible the pacific is, I imagine they’ll be in the wildcard mix till close to the end, but still finish bottom 10.

  23. I think the team will focus on playoffs but there’ll be no push to improve significantly beyond experience and they’ll be outside the playoff picture early enough for the trade boards to start featuring strome, frost, and if he’s still here next season Coleman.

Potential for goaltending to disrupt aside it’ll probably be a bottom 10 finish at best and the potential to be another real bottoming out year.

  24. anthonywmzk

Let’s assume we get Gavin McKenna at the draft; even with him in the lineup, we don’t have a good young centre for him to play with, so we would be as bad as the Chicago Blackhawks were in Connor Bedard’s first year. The smart thing would be to send him back to the NCAA for another year to marinate a little more, while we continue tanking and selling off parts, hopefully lucking into drafting Landon DuPont next season.

  25. pizzaworks

This team likely won’t be god-awful like Vancouver is this year, but they will not be a playoff team. Really depends on the summer changes. Aside from Coleman possibly being traded, the roster will probably be about the same.

  26. tilldeathdoiparty

    Yeah, we will be bad

This isn’t a bad thing, we need to suck for a couple years, letting the current guys grow and make space for other talent we are about to draft.

To be fair, we have been trickling into this rebuild for the last couple of years so we have had a half decent team with talented vets. Now we have sent those assets out, bringing unknown assets in.

For all the praise Matt’s, Whitecloud and Strome have gotten, they could very very easily not perform next year and we are stuck with them.

We also have to remember that 90% of the players here now, won’t be when we are contending, there will be significant turnover until we cement our place in the standings.

  27. We need a good 3 years in the bottom 5 so as to accrue some real depth of star power. If we bottom out once and bounce right back up, chances are we continue being a mid level team, never a true top threat.

  28. Spiritual-Elk-9692

I hope we are a bottom feed again bottom 10 at least. I know our gm don’t rlly like the idea of tanking and all that but another bad year would be perfect tbh
