@Flyers de Philadelphie

Merci Treliving.

If Matthews and Nylander bolt from a sinking ship then I’m perfectly happy to wait 2 years for the 1st overall pick.

It’s way more beneficial and exciting to wait for a chance at a future prospect like Bedard/Celebrini/Schaefer than to trade the pick too soon for a Robert Thomas.

  2. Have a strong feeling that will trade that pick this summer in a big deal either way. It’s currently very valuable and this team wants to get better a lot sooner than 2029-30 when the player they draft with the pick would be able to make an impact.

  3. Really doesn’t matter much but obviously the sooner we can start developing the player the better

  4. Depending on Toronto’s plan, the first that we hold of theirs may be a bargaining chip to get one one of their stars. If they decide the need to tear it down and be bad, they may want their pick back.

Whatever happens though it’s a high value lottery pick at this point. TOR isn’t in a great position and it’s going to take them years to fix this. 5 of 6 of their starting D have NMC or No Trade (some with lists). All of their big money forwards have NMC or No Trade except Knies, who is probably the person they’d want to keep. Oh, and no goalies that can stay healthy and no one in the pipeline.

Matthews at 13+M would be worth it if he were healthy, but I think there’s serious question about his health even before his latest injury. I’m not saying he’s injury prone, but he clearly wasn’t himself after whatever happened with his wrists.

Nylander at 11M for 6 more years (until he’s 37)? It’s possible he’s the most valuable to trade. But NMC.

The pick is going to be good for us in some way for sure.

  5. I’d look to trade it. Regardless if we make the playoffs this year or not, clearly we are close. We should be trading a pick like that for a impact player now. We don’t need a extra first round player 2 years from now who will take another 1-2 years to hit the NHL

Before we started winning games, we were all about embracing the tank. Now we’re in this weird limbo space where we either move on by winning again, or enjoy the playoffs from the couch.

Us fans are caught in the middle too.

If the leafs finish bottom 5 this year, and bottom 10 next year they get to choose who gets the 2027. That will set up a scenario where flyers, Boston, and the leafs can all negotiate with each other to determine who the pick. The leafs could ask for additional compensation for the pick. But Boston and flyers can work with each other and cut out the leafs

Toronto fans will tell you that they’re going to end up 5th worst, get leapfrogged in the lottery, and hand the 6th pick to the Bruins.

If I’m not mistaken, them keeping their pick this year means that regardless of whether we get their pick in 27 or 28, it’ll be unprotected. So yes. I want them to lose and keep it.

It’s definitely better if they finish 5th and pick 5th this year. That’s best case. At that point they have to choose whether or not to give us or Boston their 1st next year if it’s a top 10 pick. I personally think they will be just as bad next year. They have no help coming or assets to trade.

If they finish top 5 the pick we receive becomes unprotected much faster because I doubt they would willingly give a top pick to Boston in any scenario if they don’t have to. Either way, a top 5 finish this year gives us an unprotected 1st from a sinking hockey team whether 2027 or 2028. The most important thing is that Danny doesn’t trade it for anything that doesn’t solve our 1C or 1D problems

  11. I’m more confused than ever after reading all these conflicting posts.

  12. Idea scenario.

    Toronto pick ends up 6th.

Toronto trades Matthews to Boston to get back the 6th overall +.

Matthews still injured. Never plays more than 60 games in a season for Boston. They mortgaged the future on Matthews to bolster their centre group.

With Matthews gone, the Leafs rebuild and continue to suck.

That 27 first Toronto ends up drafting somewhere between 7-10. Toronto realizes they’re in the running for the 28 Firdt overall pick Maddox Schultz. They either let us pick 7-9 even though it’s a protected pick, they CAN let Philly have it.

or they make the pick, continue to suck and Philly gets an unprotected 28 first which is likely going to be, at worst, a low teens pick if not a lottery pick, which is what they have right now without the lottery chance.

Either way, Briere will hold on to that pick as long as possible. You cannot trade that pick before the 27 deadline when you know where the Leafs will finish up.

Absolutely guarantee that pick does not get traded this offseason.
