Would be great if it panned out like that but also hinges on a lottery win in a year where that player turns out to be a transcendental talent. I don’t personally think that’s this year (though I wouldn’t complain) but next year with DuPont and Joseph at defense and centre could fit the bill.
It’s a little early to say Honzek, Suniev, and maybe Hurtig and Morin are not « panning out ». Though I guess it depends on what your expectations are of them to begin with. Honzek had great underlying stats before his injury, though his injuries every season sure are not doing him any favours. Suniev looked good in the last few games of the season in the NHL and really picked up his play in the AHL before the call up.
Morin and Hurtig we will have to see, I know the flames are high on Hurtig as a stay at home guy. And Morin improved a little as he got more trust in the AHL this season.
Good analysis though its always interesting to make these comparisons.
I don’t think you can really line teams rebuilds up against each other like this with how much randomness there is in drafting and developing.
The Flames are on the right track regardless of how many people criticize their approach. Since Conroy has taken over the Flames have traded away Toffoli, Zadorov, Lindholm, Tanev, Hanifin, Markstrom, Mangipane, Andersson, Weegar, and Kadri, and gotten back Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Bahl, Weibe, Whitecloud, Matta, Castagna, Curran, 5 first round picks, 6 second round picks, and a bunch of other minor picks and prospects.
The lottery needs to go in our favor for this to have any resemblance to San Jose
Unfortunately Flames ownership would never let us bottom out like that. Just like the last rebuild that netted us Monahan and Gaudreau, ownership forced the GM to improve faster than they should and neuter the team’s upside in favour of some quick playoff revenue.
Hamonic for a 1st and two 2nds marked the death of that rebuild and I’m sure Conroy will be forced to do something similar before we get our Celebrini and Smith drafts.
Will smith is probably better than anybody we can get this year unless we draft in the top 2
The hardest part of that to replicate is getting a 1st overall and 2nd overall picks. I find a hard time seeing this team earning a top 3 pick in 2027-28. Too much talent already.
Even next year a top 5 pick is far from a guarantee. The Sharks were AWFUL when they got Celebrini.
2004 WCF Flames win 4-2!!!!
