No one wants to talk about improvement because of the context. Has nothing to do with their actual record, but rather how they got to that record. 1st in the eastern conference in January to missing the playoffs is a historical fall off, and it’s a sign of deeper issues than we can see as fans. Even considering their hot streak near the start of the season a lot of that was just Gibson suddenly becoming the best goalie in the world and their PP carrying. The 5-on-5 stats and their extremely low movement speed as a team are not very inspiring. Those are attributes you desperately need to be a legit team and until we fix our 2C and bottom six problem I’m not sure how we improve further. The doom from the fanbase is pretty much justified.
They can't hide their play or the W-L records but everything else is hidden from the fans. As such rumors and innuendo constantly surround this team. Yzerman talks to the media in code leaving everyone to parse WTF he's trying not to say. I'm damn tired of that charade.
As fans we want a winning team that we can take pride in. Not this half baked garbage they've been putting on the ice the last 4 years. The product is worth a $10 ticket. Not $150+!
I attended many games at the Joe, if I still lived there I wouldn't waste a nickel for that clown show.

You guys are part of the problem. Hate to say it. Half the players on this team disgraced the fu**ing crest and you guys are scratching and clawing the improvements. Fu**ing pathetic. Fans are pissed. You can’t cover up lack of heart or effort. The bottom 6 is garbage. The top 6 is diluted. Pro scouting needs punted to the moon. Ridiculous takes.

They did improve….how much embarrassment they are able to bring to their fanbase. They found a way.

These end-of-season pressers are a total waste of time. What do beat writers expect when they ask typical softball questions. Whatever players say, you must take answers with huge amount of salt.
Finnie needs to be developed into a Center. When Larkin was out, he was placed at the 2C position and he was INCREDIBLE! Wherever he is placed in any where of the lineup, he needs to be placed in the middle of a line such as the 2C or 3C.

Bottom line, this veteran fwd core is not good enough in their current spots. Larkin is not a top 1C, he’s bottom 6-7. We all know they have no real 2C
So if they keep trying to build around that fwd cire, it’s only going to be more of the same for 2-3yrs. The. A likely 2nd rebuild.
Or they trade guys like 71 and 93 this summer, take a step backwards next year developing your kids, as well as those young trade returns, and truly start competing to win playoff rounds in 3yrs.
That’s really the two choices. My guess is they keep chasing 8 seeds and we’re having this same discussion next April.

Im not a Detroit fan but I agree with a lot of you points but your sucking up & making excuses went a bit too far on this episode id say.
I work at Ball arena,& saw Detroit shut us out…only time we got shut out all season 2-0 with empty net goal. Right after we beat you 5-0 in Detroit BTW. But while they looked good,& played smart low event hockey when you beat us-UNBEATABLE ISNT REMOTELY A WORD I WOULD USE! You shut out 121 point team on their home ice.
Yes you definitely looked like a playoff team back then,& I fully expected you'd make it-though I did say you weren't quite as good as your record back then. But to exaggerate to ridiculous degrees by using the word unbeatable? Come on-very few nights do the AVS even meet the eye test of an UNBEATABLE standard. BTW-Detroit had the LEAST amount of injuries of any team.
This team is never “on.” Look at the underlying numbers. Even when they were atop the division, they still couldn’t score 5v5. Neither Top 6 C controls the puck in the ozone.
It’s just maddening that so many in Detroit put Larkin on an Yzerman type pedestal. If he’s your 2C then you’re gonna be a really good fwd core. He’s not though. He’s the 1C in Detroit, and as long as that is the case, nothing is changing. He’s certainly not gonna get better. Only decline from here. This team is structurally built wrong at fwd. The sooner they move on from trying to shove that square in that circle, the faster they can start winning consistently again.
I didn’t even consider that the Wings improved! The Atlantic was very good this season.
How many 5v5 goals did our 1C have since Xmas? Compare that to every other 1C in the NHL.
Way too many fans refuse to look at comparables. The excuses have become endless.
Btw, Tarasenko said it when he left. They had no Center for him to play with. Larkin is a great winger playing 1C in the NHL. You aren’t gonna be anything more than average if that’s your 1C.. 2C? Perfect. And I like Larkin btw. He is what he is though, and it’s just not good enough.

Unfortunately the bottom six will require surgery to the top six- the same guys who are jerseys this year will be on the team next year. Who is taking these bottom six guys that we don’t want?

Delusion about Marco Kasper! Led the team in plus minus! MINUS player who had a sophomore “slump”? Seriously guys?? Ras + Kasper is….playoff oblivion! These are top picks! Ugh!
I'm disappointed in this season and still mostly optimistic about the future.
There are some concerns, the biggest one being the annual collapse which indicates there's something deeper than just roster construction. There's a few players that have been here through all the collapses, but so has Tanguay and probably some other people behind the scenes too. Maybe the training staff needs improvement, idk, everything has to be considered.
The positive thing is that Seider and Raymond continues to grow, Ed, Kasper and AlJo are now past their sophomore year and should take another step next year. ASP and Finnie had decent rookie seasons and we still have a large group of prospects with NHL potential, not just first round picks either.
I still believe Yzerman knows how to aquire talent through trade or FA. Debrincat, Kane, Gibson and Faulk are players who have improved the team. Perron (the first time), Ghost, Vrana and Walman are examples of other players who had a positive impact on the ice but either didn't last our work out off-ice for some reason.
If Marco Kasper scores 5 more goals we make the playoffs. Copp Compher and Rasmussen needed 7 more combined and we make the playoffs. LOL Keep the blame where it should be. Hold players accountable.
91 to 86 to 92 points in 3 seasons is not growth.
Small point: WE NEED an enforcer. Or someone who has the job — of protection. Tired of Dylan, Lucas, etc getting bullied and even injured because there's no Big Brother on the team. Probert? Kocur? Remember those guys? McCarty? Maltby? Alex Debrincat had to fight for Larkin in the last 8 seconds of the Ottawa game. You know who else protected Larkin? Brady Tkachuk. Whether the GM is Yzerman or Jesus—– we need an enforcer, this year, period.
We need to change momentum. We need to be doing really well — and then have 4 nations. OR let's be doing really well –and have Olympics. That works out great

Paul Coffey was my hero as a kid, and I was devastated when we traded him. Years later when he was playing in Carolina I had a chance to get my Wings jersey signed by him and he refused to sign Detroit stuff, which shattered my heart all over again… And I still would rather have the Wings win the cup that year and if destroying my love of an individual player was the price for that, so be it.
We had 91 pts the season before. You literally are trying to put a positive spin on a team that is worse than the dead wings era. You literally don't know anything.
I truly believe Stevie is Bi bcuz when he played he always had 4 tough guys protecting him yet these wings are WEAK, GUTLESS, COWARDLY with ZERO GRIT yet the guys defending Stevie I bet are lgbtq+ANNUS LIKKERS & G_Y! F.U.
