Actually the rule book states any penalty that is being called that occured between the missed stoppage of play and the whistle is still a penalty. The rule book also does not say the puck has to stay on the tape of the stick to be considered having control/possession of the puck. Staal had control/possession of the puck. Also martinook skate was off the ice but the newish rule raises the blue line. Martinook's trailing skate did not cross before the puck!!! Good goal. Bad call by the situation room that happens to be in Canada. HMMMMM. The explanation the Hurricanes got was that Staal did not have possession of the puck. BS!!! The officiating was also in the Sens favor. Canes got the bounces and the Sens got the calls. The puck doesn't lie!!! Canes WIN!!!
The challenge for offside was due to the trailing player, but the actual reversal was because Staal (supposedly) did not have "control" of the puck and put himself offside. So not only was the play onside, Toronto invented a completely different reasoning to overturn a call on the ice.

1:40 I had to look it up – That call was made with reference to Rule 38.7 of the NHL rulebook, which states in part: "If one or more penalties (minor or major) are assessed between the time of the missed infraction and the video review that disallows the apparent goal, the offending team(s) (and responsible Player(s)) will still be required to serve the penalty(ies) identified and assessed, and the time of the penalty(ies) will be recorded as the time at which the play should have been stopped for the missed infraction."

Give the Canes the credit they deserve – 8 years in a row making the playoffs, winning and advancing consistently (have not lost first round series in 7 straight years) – solid team that plays all 3 periods the same day in and day out. Ullmark, Markstrom, Vas, Bob and other always have great series against Canes – they have too, because the pace that Canes play – appreciate what you see – great hockey by a team that organizationally does a great job. Fans here love their Canes – come down and see a playoff game in your shorts and a t-shirt after playing golf pre-game.
