-PROMISES, PROMISES. the one thing you can always count on is isles failing to find, draft, or acquire 50 g type of scorers. only been waiting 30 years for one.
-and in 13's defense he has never had a true g scorer on his line. i've wondered for 9 seasons what would 13's numbers look like with big time scorer on his wing playing c?
-jrob? 40 g's can score on pp played for pouty with stars. probably not happening as rfa. pettersson? no thanks for that cost. with rumours out there what about austen who has a decent deal but would be costly? maybe the problem is isles just don't want to pay the now $15+ million cost a true g scorer would cost.
-on the bright side nj has never had a 50 g 100 pt. scorer. if only jack could play a full season.
Like I said Gil, Barzy said he was still not fully healthy this year and that it takes up to 2 years to recover from his injury. You hate to trade a home grown player, but I'm thinking move him home to Vancouver for picks…this will be yet another coach he has to learn his system…I wouldn't blame him if he wants a fresh start.
I NEED to see a vastly improved roster next season. Cant take many of these guys anymore.
We dont need a 50-goal scorer (huge if to find one). What we do need is one more consistent 40-goal scorer to complement Horvat. That is easier to acquire. One more first-line defensive defenseman … and an enforcer on the fourth line who is not a defensive casualty. Three missing pieces that would have given us five to seven more wins. So sick of seeing Tampa Bay and Carolina continuing to be so consistent while our personnel decision-making incompetence is magnified. Darche does not impress me. C- … not a D+ only because Schenn is a decent third line center that will contribute 20 goals and be dominant on face-offs next sesson.
Haven’t been able to watch you in a bit. Did you do an episode of why Roy was fired? I heard the team refused to listen to him.
About Bo Horvat, he was on quite a tear when he got hurt early in the season. Then he got hurt again and did not quite get his mojo back. I believe he would have had over 40 goals if not for the injury and the late-season slump (although it wasn't just him slumping down the stretch). I'm with you Gil. A- for Bo.
Thank you Lou for f****king the team
HOW CAN WE SIGN ALEX TUCH?
Schenn & Palat’s money could have been well spent on an Alex Tuch this summer.
We never sign a top UFA…
Darche shot himself in the foot.
I wanted Darche more than anyone. I’m now regretting it.
He could have shed Anders Lee’s at the beginning of the year, and if you took Lee’s 7 million off and what we signed Drouin for Darche could have went to try and get Nikolaj Ehlers.
This is what has to change.
We did go after Panarin, and I am very happy he never won squat!
Would it be nice to have a perennial 40 to 50 goal scorer? Hell Yes! But when you are just starting to build your assets and farm team this has to come from the draft not from a trade which would wipe out your prospects or draft capital! Perhaps play a more efficient defensive system ala Trotz… which I am sure Pete will likely do. Less goals against will always give a team a chance to win! We have to have patience. Fans expect a Stanley Cup team from a GM who inherited years of traded first round picks and lifetime contracts for AHL players. Is this Darche’s fault? Hmmm no! Fans have no idea what Darche might do at the draft so perhaps more patience is required! Fans should of known going into last season that we likely would not make the playoffs and even if we did we would be out in the first round
This team is just starting to have decent assets. You don't blow them all for some has-been goal scorer. You develop those players from within. DO NOT GIVE UP PROSPECTS PERIOD! In fact we need to trade every mid 30's guy we have to acquire more picks. We really need to get back the 1st round pick we gave up for Schenn. Look at the wagon Monteal built. Such a young talented team. We have to use that as an example going forward.
Darche destroyed our cap space.
Palat & Schenn 12.5 million.
Now, we have to give away picks in trade for a team to take those two.
I would live with giving
Eiserman / Ritchie / Eklund
A shot at one of the lines.
We have to shed payroll.
Do not re-sign Lee
Do not re-sign Soucy,
We should stay the course with Eklund, Eiserman, & Kash.
I would only trade our #1 this year and next and a second tier prospect like Nelson or Finley for a goal scorer… 25-30 goal scorer?
Thanks for setting expectations. Highly unlikely isles get a sniper type player. I think keeping barzal, put him back to wing with Bo and add a 25 goal guy is realistic. You ddnr mention palmeri he is coming back. Where does he fit in? Coming off major knee injury at 35 yrs old. Alot of issues. Here are the points that need to be prioritzed.
1. Too 6 forward
2. Top 6 d man
3. Backup goali
4. Overhaul 4 line with skill and toughness. Without that top sniper need to spread scoring accross all the
lines. Gatcomb and maclaen arent that.
The last 40 goal scorer was actually Anders Lee. Jason Blake also did it. I'm assuming you meant more than 1 year of it
say what you want about this team, bottom line is they are so FAR away from being competitive, wake up fans this team has become a joke through the years, No playoffs next season or this decade…
Had it not been for Bossy we would have never won a CUP…
Man that palat trade was such a disaster for this year and next and still don’t understand the pageou extension with the schenn trade makes no sense
For the barzal, I've been back and forth a bit, he's our top skater when it comes to skill and can move the puck at an elite level. The mental side, he still makes mistakes i'd expect from a rookie. In the end I'm open to trading him if the value back is high (goal scorer or top 10 picks in the draft). We shouldn't trade him just to trade him, the value needs to be there. Also I agree until we can get out from all of the veterans contracts a bit, we still need to temper the teams expectations for next year and possibly the season after Then free up cap room and hopefully bring in younger, more dynamic talent after that.
6:20 “no one is taking Schenn is a deal” Actually, I know one guy who would 😂😭
watching playoffs now and it is SO clear that we are just more than one or two players away. we would have gotten rolled in playoffs. Shaefer would have zero ice in the playoffs because all focus could be on him and without him we have nothing. enough with barzal already being the savior…he's had many forwards come in to help and calling him our best offensive force is kind of laughable
Darche was dealt a bad hand by Lou. However, his moves of resigning Kyle P and JPG and acquiring Soucy and Palat and Schenn made us older and slower and more expensive. Best case scenario is, if Anders Lee signs with Minnesota and we realise the Cap savings and buy out Mayfield and walk away from Shabanov. For the next 2-3 years we will have limited cap flexibility and understand we will have limited roster spots tied to these older and declining vets.
Good morning team! Gil, too many things that can go right and also wrong with this team. Building our prospects and getting rid of the dead weight on the team seems to be the way to go. Building a successful hockey team in the NHL is not as easy as that small statement is. You have to keep a select group of leadership (veteran) players that are there for the youngsters. We also need an enforcer that is going to get you only 15-20 points all season is necessary, as long as he knows his role and protects the players that need protecting. If you remember, back in the day, teams would have a complete line of these type of enforcers. We also need a player that can get north of 40 goals. With these kind of assets, and the players that are coming up, the team should have a great future, but there has to be the will to want to create such a team. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Everyone, have a great day! Looking forward to the episode tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!
If you actually pay attention to the rest of the NHL, the good teams are the ones that move the puck quickly and with purpose. They don’t let a guy skate a circle for ten seconds and then turn the puck over. The Isles need to move on from Barzal and sell high while he’s coming off a 70 point full season. Being an elite skater doesn’t make you an elite offensive player. This team will look a lot different for the better if it’s not running the offense and power play through Barzal.
Gm Gil. At 9 a season, Barzal is grossly overpriced. I'd send Barzal and picks to Edmonton for McDavid who could be available if Edmonton does not make the finals this year. He has made it clear he's leaving the Oilers if the team doesn't make a serious run this year. The free agent moves Darche made as well as extending Pageau may signal that the team is not moving forward … does make u wonder if Lou is pulling the strings in the background.
lol fishstick fan talking about trying to unlock a guys offensive upside, who's already been in the league for 10yrs. Typical fishsticks talk, thinking you can change water into wine, instead of accepting that your team is bad and no big name FA's will ever want to be a fishstick. Barzal is what he is, deal with it.
After watching these playoff games Isles are not close to contending. They would be lucky to win a game. Physically they would not match up. The Knights had 52 hits no way the Isles could get even half of that. Team needs to tank for another year and move out bad contracts and play for 2 years down the line. Darche did not do any favors getting older and slower. Lee needs to walk.Upgrade the roster will not happen over night.
For the life of me, I can't figure out how Darche came to the conclusion that this roster was gonna make the playoffs, and keep up with/contend with hot stuff teams like Carolina, Tampa, Buffalo, et. al. We would have been unceremoniously defeated in the first round without a win. The aforementioned teams are so much better than us, light years ahead of us roster wise and how they formulate and carry out their game plan. Unike us: Old, slow, underperforming, overpaid, head in the clouds waiting for the season to end so they can set their summer time tee times. Another season of inexcusable country club behavior, and move made by our new GM who, by all accounts, was suppose to be the antithesis to scooby lou. How does Darche come to the conclusion that trading away 2026 first second and third round picks, for old slow expensive trash, is gonna take us to the promised land? Somebody down below made a suggestion that we try packaging Engvall with the rights to Shabanov just to clear Engvall's cost prohibitive contract from the books. I agree…….if we're able to find "a sucker born every second" (WC Fields). Darche has to make amends for his atrocious trade deadline blunders, including extending Pageau, by getting creative in order to move Duclair, Engvall, Palmieri, Mayfield. Dare I say we package Pulock and Pelech, in separate deals, with the aforementioned trash in order to move the aforementioned trash? For example: Pulock and Duclair and/or Pelech and Engvall? I know, we're then moving 33 and 1/3 % of our D men. But they're getting old in the tooth and can still play at a high level. Patchwork for the next couple of seasons on D.
I'm still adamant that we move Mathew Barzal (who i've always liked and think he's an excellent hockey player) in a strike while the iron is hot move while he's still in his prime and coming off a solid season. I know I beat this like a dead horse but see if his hometown(s) of Vancouver or Seattle would be interested in a package for their first round pick if they would take Barzal along with Duclair and Mayfield. That would open up a lot of salary cap space and clear a path for Eiserman and Eklund, at the same time. Mayfield's spot would then go to Aitchison. If we don't move Pelech or Pulock, we'd look like this next season: Schaefer, DeAngelo, Aitchison, George, Pelech, Pulock. Major moves have to be made or this franchise will remain in a perpetual quagmire, with a foundation built upon overpaid, underachieving, la dee dah type of players. Once Barzal is traded, you might find Horvat and Sorokin would be more willing to waive their NTC's in order to case that elusive Stanley Cup. They're both no spring chickens. For me, it's more exciting to watch young kids get a shot, even if they understandably make mistakes (normal) but then learn from said mistakes and become better players with self confidence. THIS IS NOT A PLAYOFF ROSTER (obviously). MAKE BETTER DECISIONS AND MOVES ALREADY!
Not so easy to find a sniper, Hope Darche can do it! LGI
Good afternoon, Gil. How are you? The Islanders have needed a sniper since Ziggy Palffy, or if you go further than that, Pierre Turgeon and especially Mike Bossy. To this day, I curse Mike Milbury for sending Palffy off to Hollywood. The Islanders went over the cap salary. Bo Horvat gets an A- the injury and the slump towards the did him in. HAPPY 🎂 KEN LEITER. He scored a goal and was a helper in a win over the 🐧. Hear from you later, Gil, but before I go, I compared Ziggy Palffy to a Character from The Godfather and Yellowstone. On The Godfather side, he was a lot like Fredo. He was left out, but he was Michael Corleone on the scoreboard. On the Yellowstone side, he was like Kayce Dutton from Yellowstone he was a warrior, but he liked to be left alone. Now, LGI 🏒 🔵 🟠
Trading Barzal will definitely signal the NYI letting go of the past and making moves to surround Matthew Schaefer with good players that fit more in his timeframe.
The problem wit(trading for a sniper is you’re not going to get one. 9 of the 10 top goal scorers are playing for the team that drafted them, the one who wasn’t is Stamkos who played for the team that drafted him for 14/15 years. Noticed this when looking at the stats at the end of the season.
Trading Barzal isn't the answer. For every sniper in history there has been a top set up man to make others better. Maybe Eklund becomes more of a set up man. Idk. You got one now in barzy. Keep him. Move other pieces to find more goalscoring.

I must be watching different Islander games because reading these comments make it seem like Barzal is Mike Bossy. Good but not great in any way.
You don’t get rid of Barzal, sorry. The new coach needs to rein him in and tell him what he expects. Him skating too much is a real thing and that’s the problem here. PP is all about making quick decisions and utilizing your top players for best chances at converting. Not all of this skating in circles, quick and decisive high quality chances, shots. Get someone in front of the net, we need more bodies in front and not giving opposing goalies a chance at seeing shots coming through. Lee was great at this and maybe Ritchie becomes this important part of the PP.
Ep40 would be a great pick up but if your going for him might as well grab robertson the cost will be super similar or just fix the power play
If we aren't hasty and things work out… well maybe Beltchetz falls and Isles get a Lindros project? Barzals got to work on his shot and trigger… kinda a one trick pony!
I suggested Peety: but he has to win in Bridgeport first to prove it too himself he's a player. once he's confident he's a player… Huge gamble at 11.6 million I ask in Vancouver is he a bona fide center? and I don't get answers!
Players that might be good too look at in the next two years: Jani Nyman seems out of the loop in Seattle? Also I've always been intrigued with Stain Solberg in Anaheim as a potential tuff Dman? Lefty 6'2" 2024 #23 pick
So we had a winning record but , again, no playoffs. This the measuring stick now?
So now we have to find a sniper for a 29 year old Barzal? Why can’t he be a that sniper at 9.1 per? It’s not working anymore, too old, too slow . Start rebuilding around Schaffer etc…
Get Robertson !!!
Schaefer's bonuses aren't the problem, as you said it's palat and shenn six and 6.5 million if they weren't there Schaefer's bonus would not have been any bit of an problematic overage.
Palat does not have a fourth line skill set even though he played a little bit on the fourth line, he needs to be on the third line and effective on the third line to make it work kind of like Pierre.
Also there was a comment on here about shenn being a good third line Center as you said in previous episodes he makes way too much money to be a third line center a good third line center is not worth 6.5.
