That was a hell of a pass from a player who didn't have control of the puck lol
IF the play was offsides, then the penalty wouldn't have been awarded because the play was dead before the infraction. If one exists, the other can't. Just saying. It should have been a face off in the neutral zone and whatever from there. No penalty shot can be awarded for a penalty that didn't happen. Check the rules.

I do want to add as a canes fan, that offsides call to my knowledge was on staal’s feet entering the zone without being in control of the puck. Still think that’s a crazy call to have for an overtime playoff game winner though especially when it’s arguable that he always had control and wouldn’t be offside.
In the old days if you skated in backwards before the puck that would be offside. This call confused me so much. When did that change?
An NHL ref calling a hockey player not having control of the puck, is like a soccer ref calling an attacking player off sides, because he decided to move the ball behind himself, to move around a defender. What. A. Joke.

How can you retroactively call an offsides, then call a penalty after backing up the timeframe? That makes zero sense.
