What do you think the Bruins need to do to get back in the series?
My takeaways are (1) after this year its time to end the lohrei experiment. Trade him this offseason when you might still get something. He is straight terrible defensively and not good enough offensively to justify it. (2) Hagens has shown flashes and I'm impressed with his willingness to engage physically but he was lost this game. Also I am not seeing any real skating speed from him and that's a little concerning unless he's holding something back to fit in the structure, (3) let's go back to pasta / minten / khus cuz the current first line is just too damn slow, (4) Buffalo is better! …but hey this is really all gravy for the Bs this year.
And Re: Pasta…. I'm pretty sure he's been playing with a play-through injury all year though. Last year he averaged 8.1 rushes per game over 18mph (what NHL Edge classifies as fast). This year it dropped to 5.4 rushes per game over 18mph. That's a 33% dropoff in one year which I dont think happens absent some sort of nagging injury. I heard rumors about a groin injury. Hope gets taken care of this summer if that's the case.
We have been resilient all this year. Swayman gives us a chance. we need a takeover game from our 1st line. I agree Fraser mitten could hop up to 1c. Let’s go Bruins! Also I think our offense as long as we work hard could show back up. Let’s go Bruins!
Did swayman carry them tho , shots 28-26 buffalo. Then high danger scoring chances bruins had edge in. Periods 1, an 2 . Third period buffalo had more high danger chances. Swayman had a better season this year. It's all in who can make the big saves in the crunch. Bruins should have edge in goaltending department this series but idk if they can get out of round 1 honestly. Regardless nobody thought they'd be in playoffs. So it's a win for the season. This team has proven above expectations sir!
Re: speed mismatch, yah… Per NHL Edge Buffalo is the #3 fastest team in the NHL, and our beloved Bs are, wait for it… #32 fastest! So yah this is a huge speed mismatch and the Bruins really need to add speed however they can to this team in the offseason.
Lohrei didnt need an elbow to cough up the puck.
Mick is a treasure. Felt good about team after game 2 but not so much after 3. Still a lot of hockey left to play. If we can score a little more and let swayman see the puck maybe we can steal this series or at least extend it to 6 or 7
The Bruins are a strange team this year, they are probably done in this series, however Vegas had them finishing 28th?, and they were 8th overall, nobody saw that coming, so who knows, the style hasn't been great but they have often got results
Swayman is keeping them in , reminds me of the Leaf series where he was insanely good, but also groundhog day in that Mr Sweeny hasn't got more elite forwards for Pasta
Guys let's view this playoff series for what is: practice for if and when the team becomes a real contemder. Too many holes in the lineup. The big win this year comes May 5th if Toronto's pick drops out of the top 5!
This team is a rough sketch. Not ready for the oil paints yet.

Through 3 games, High-Danger scoring chances at even strength:
Kastelic 4
Arvidsson 3
Pastrnak 2
Jeannot 2
Zacha 2
Khusnutdinov 2
Hagens 2
Geekie 2
Nice chat boys. Thanks for the post.

It would be incredibly rare for a powerplay to be more valuable than a penalty shot.
Success rates on penalty shots are typically 30+%.
Powerplay efficiency varies by team, but it’s typically around 22-23%.
Opting for a powerplay might be smart if defending a lead, late in the game, because that would effectively neutralize the opponent’s empty-net attacker, for up to two minutes. Other than that, though? Take the penalty shot, every time.
Buffalo is a much better team! Swayman is the biggest reason they are even relevant
If not for Swayman, this series would be over Sunday.
Pasta is a ghost.
Hagens needs to sit, he's completely in effective.
The 1st line and 3rd line need to be shaken up.
But Buffalo is by far the way better team. And will win this on Tuesday.
Bruins got to makes this a car wreck and not a race, i dont care what the refs say send them a video of all the hacks Sway is taking and then scrum it up every time they whack him. It makes the whole team play physically instead of just the 4th line.
You got to bring in Steve’s for Hagens. Experiment over for now. Kids 170p most. Hit the weight room and eat. Steeves is 4th most hits on the team and will try with a man’s effort for what this is. No offence to James. I said he wasn’t ready before and he’s not.
Just the Bruins luck not to get Martone instead of Hagens.
But knowing Sweeney, if Martone was available, he still would have drafted Hagens.
Has it always looked pretty? Definitely not, but regardless of what happens in this series I think the Bruins are going to start next season much better than they did this year. Swayman has been incredible and Minten and Khustnutdinov somehow keep looking better as time goes on. I'm excited for a full season of Hagens too, I'm not really worried about the struggles in the most recent game. Hopefully they can find another Aspirot for defense but Peeke leaving this summer will be a good start.
I don't want to sound like a know it all, but this team is playing with house money. No one thought they would be in the playoffs. Good teaching tool for the young players. I hate to say this, but they are over matched, but this team has no give up.
If you have bad ingredients, you can't make a great cake by changing them around.
So all I heard is the Sabres are just a far better team and bruins are doomed
Going to make a crystal ball prediction here: Hagens will ultimately develop into a Krejci like center that plays best operating in a phone booth setting up big wings that can clear out space like looch and horty used to. He's smart, nifty, willing to engage physically, and shows an all around game. Will take time to develop though and won't be this instant wow type guy.

I want to push back against this narrative that Mick is pushing, here. Yes, the B’s have keep Dahlin off the box scoresheet, mostly. That’s true.
However, Dahlin currently sports a god-tier Fenwick-for (through three games) at 67%. He also has a god-tier on-ice expected goals-for, at 68%.
Byram, by contrast, has 54% and 48%, respectively, in those metrics (through three games). That’s good, but much nearer to “average” than “praiseworthy”. Dahlin is the locomotive engine for the Sabres’ D. Byram is just a happy passenger on the train.
If it's not Lohrei it's Peeke, If its not Peeke its Lohrei.
Hey Good Season boys – total overachievers – the play is very poor overall and the passing is for pot!
that was a tough watch
Elias L – sucks – and we paid him a boat load – barf!
Great conversation! I would sit Hagens at this point. Can't have a 3rd Line player during the playoffs registering only 9 minutes a night. I know he was OK the first couple games, but he looked like a guy who had only played 3 NHL games last night. I know Sturm is supportive, but as everyone likes to say the NHL is not a developmental league especially during the playoffs. Hate that Lohrei is a completely different player this playoffs than last time. He was free and taking risks against Toronto and this time he seems scared to make a mistake. Does not help him that Hampus is not playing well right now either. Not sure if I take him out of the lineup though. Elias Lindholm just makes my blood pressure rise. The contract he has is ridiculous and he is not a 1C. Huge Sweeney mistake. I would move him to 3C next game and move Minten up. The one thing he shines at – draws – was not there last game. Plus again he looked disinterested. So frustrating that the B's are stuck with him for another 5 years and that he's one of the main reasons Poitras can't play center on this roster.
Swayman is good, until 3rd period when BUFFALO takes over. Its a great series so far, anyone could still take it. Go Sabres 🏒 i come in peace ppl 😊
I’ve been saying this in other posts. Any playoff team with a 19 year old who has only played in two regular season games is not serious about a deep run.
I think the TNT broadcast was in love with Buffalo
Shoot the puck
No one knows hockey and the Bs like Mick. Great show!
they need to buyout elias lindholm. he is absolutely invisible
People defending hagens are in denial. Replacing your worst forward for someone
steadier and tougher will make some difference.
Court. I was at game 1 in Buffalo and I am not worried about yesterday's loss. Swayman in game one played out of his mind and that had a lot to do with him having great looks because the D was clearing people out and Thompson and Tuk don't make their bones in the paint. Buffalo created no resistance to us entering their zone , and the quality of their rushes into our zone were not great and where a player broke with speed Swayman easily tracked them. The place went dead after Lindholm scored the second goal and I was laughing under my breadth when Lohrei was burning clock at the 8 minute mark of the 3rd and fans were screaming at the Sabres, who had packed it in, to go after Lohrei – it was like parents screaming at a Mite game!
I have not been able to watch games 2 & 3 but after game 1: these were my thoughts:
1. If the Sabres continued to allow easily entries into their offensive zone, both McAvoy and Lohrei needed to be given the green light to go and score;
2. I don't know if Pasta has a lingering injury but he absolutely needs to drive the puck into the offensive zone and play infront of the net not behind or the sides; he gets knocked off the puck too easily and if you remember after Lohrei released on burning the puck in the 3rd there was a dump to Pasta in the O zone and it looked like they wanted him to take it behind the net and burn more clock and set up for a shot and the puck got ripped from him immediately.
3. Kusnutdinov should be moved back to the 1st line because he is excellent hunting pucks and that is what Pasta needs. I don't love the 3rd pairing and Hagens, at least in game 1, looked completely uncomfortable playing the wing and at no time was he rushing with the puck into the offensive zone because no one was finding him. It got so bad it appeared Sturm ran a set play in the 3rd that gave Hagens his 1st shot on net.
3. Midlestadt came out flying in the game then he fell off. He needs to find his game because I think he can match Buffalo's speed.

Always good to see Mick.
"Swayman haters?"
Okay, we'll do this.
He's pocketing $10 million this season – catching up to his salary. He's been paid to do his development in the NHL. That was the problem. Paid on potential
What if he was seriously injured?
We'd be stuck.
It's been too easy for him. That's been the problem.
If Ullmark wasn't carrying the heavier load those two seasons, They coddled Sway's schedule down to hand picking rosters based on opponents' injuries, Jeremy's nhl career stats would ugly. He certainly wouldn't have won a Jennings award. So let's get real.
His game just changed after the Olympic break. So I don't know why fans legitimately critiquing his play, would be haters?
So every coach that critiques their player is a hater?
Every bit of critique has been right on. It's about damn time they've done something about his development and his play has caught up to his salary.
He's doing a great job stopping pucks.
still haa a ways to go, controlling rebounds, helping forward lines. But that will come
Now he's playing on earth again.
With a team. Coordinating with the defense, leading them.
And this season, when they're playing their game, his teammates are keeping that ice open so he can see those pucks coming in. The team or whatever structure deserves credit also. They're giving him eyes
after the Olympic break, Swayman started acknowledging his teammates keeping the ice open so he can work.
But there has been a great deal of issue with his controlling rebounds. He's not leaving any rebounds right now. And he's covering pucks MUCH better the last few months than we have seen him his entire career.
The critique from his teammates Zadorov and Brandon Carlo was right on at the time.
So this idea that certain players are whiners and fans "hate" Swayman is strange. The only way an athlete's going to get better is if they listen to critique. Writing off veteran hockey players as if they're whiners was disrespectful. THEY WERE ADDRESSING THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEFENDERS AND THE GOALIE.
We saw the highlight right in front of our faces – there was confusion. Carlo was holding that puck up against his pad waiting for Jeremy to cover it. He didn't.
Listen to the audio – that's Carlo's voice running that play, not the goalie.
Now Jeremy has learned.
I don't think I've used the word "hate" since junior high school
Lol!
Clearly he's doing his development in the NHL. Not the AHL. It's been an issue.
The most impressive so far this series is his calling the time out game 2.
He's finally learning how to be a teammate, read the ice. Knows he needs his teammates, whereas previous seasons
👉 he played like he was alone out there trying to be Superman. Often looked overwhelmed.
⭐ Now he's communicating and reading the team. The goalie is the captain of the defense. That was awesome and his best save of this series. A sign of maturity, Knowing his limitations.
Fully aware that wasn't able to handle that onslaught alone.
I want to know who he's working with. I noticed this a couple of months ago and court stated there is a new skills coach around.
All of this is new since Olympic break. Clearly he's gotten some skills coaching- And he's coachable now.
So nobody was hating on anybody.
🙄
It's all been valid critique and they are addressing it.
So that's my story and I'm sticking to it
😄
it's reasonable to expect this level play out of a goalie earning $10 million for God's sake
The critiques have been valid, not hating.
We don't know what stunted his development, probably only 14 games in the AHL didn't help.
I don't usually respond to that word, but I will make an exception here
Game 3 was a different Buffalo team
Was working while listening to the video today, I'm not sure if I missed it but I didn't hear any mention of Noah Ostlund. Almost a half a point per game 3C.
Scrutinizing our own team too much without acknowledging the fact that our opponent changed isn't going to help anything.
Noah has likely been sitting in the press box or watching these games while injured, he was fresh as a daisy ready to play, 1 goal and 1 assist
And it's the lower line mismatches that win and lose championships
Lyons was injured a few weeks ago. Why UPL had to pick up the load.
Sabres now have an experienced playoff goalie and a hot shot 3C rookie who's been studying from above.
If Bruins were having struggles trying to get the man on man system down during regular season at that speed? of course it's going to be a bigger struggle in playoffs at this speed
It's evident Buffalo has tweaked their team, two new players on the ice- let's see if Marco can adjust.
If Bruins were playing the traditional zone system, there's a possibility they could call on Matt poitras to mix it up, but that doesn't seem feasible in this new structure.
On another note, MSL might be up for the Jack Adams, Habs have been a very well coached team this playoffs. Smart play.
Never say die!

Mick, your generation DID invent sex, drugs and rock and roll!
Cort, comparing your youth hockey league daughter's attempt to move to forward to an NHL player was not compelling. Haggs does this sometimes with his son, Finn, and it reduces credibility. We all love our kids, but come on now!
