This organization is done. It will be years and years until they’re watchable again

    Important notes:

    * the Maple Leafs are expected to announce their new hockey leadership later this afternoon, with a media conference on Monday.
    * Mats Sundin returns to the organization as Senior Executive Advisor, Hockey Operations.
    * John Chayka is the new general manager.
    * Chayka reports directly to MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley. The position the organization advertised in its interview process was “head of hockey operations,” and that’s what Chayka will be.

Pelley saying we don’t need a rebuild and then doing this too, we’re cooked until he’s out at MLSE. Don’t know if this team will be actually competitive for like 10 years.

  4. sengesett

Tough times ahead, hopefully we can ride out the storm

  5. Specialist-Rip-96

It won’t get better until Pelley is gone. I dunno maybe a boycott or something is needed.

  6. RoaringPity

keith doesn’t want a president in any of the sports teams under MLSE so his hands will be all over everything

no way these 2 are what their searching firm found for them

  7. Couple years ago I decided to quit watching regular season, tune in for the playoffs. Seems like it’ll be a while before I watch the Leafs again.

I know there are a lot of younger fans on here who really only know the Matthews era. It’s going to get ugly. Very ugly.

Prepare yourself for more Minten type trades. It’s what the leafs did under every management group but Shanny until the very end.

Knies is going to get moved for a 30 year old dman who is 3 years removed from being as good as their reputation and breaks down within 2 seasons. Knies will become captain of the new team. Prepare yourselves

  9. ComputerSaysnooooo

So essentially they are using sundin as a glorified mascot while still having PelleyGPT with final say?

time for me to invest into a different sport i guess.. until this dark era is over

  11. If I have to go through watching another season of boring ass Berube hockey, I’m done.

  12. N-cadherin

Hearing that Sundin will also be suiting up as their new first line centre and captain. Andrew Raycroft and Alexei Ponikarovsky in talks to return as well

I gave Treliving a chance when he was first hired, so I’m going to do the same for Chayka.

However, it’s very disappointing that with all the resources (financial and otherwise) that MLSE has, this was the candidate they decided on.

  14. kindgentleman23

I like that they’re splitting the hockey ops side from the team management side. Like a Shapiro/Atkins setup. Prob a lot for one man (Treliving) to take on by himself.

Sundin will focus on culture/vibes/extracurricular stuff and chayka will assemble the best analytically sound team he can without worrying about all of the operations side of the business.

I get it in theory but still expecting the worst.

I DO like that chayka has a plan, Treliving on the other hand was always a few weeks away from a real plan

  15. can’t believe how cursed the most valuable franchise is. Why was I born into this teams fandom….

It`s nice to see Mats back in Toronto. Hopefully Chayka learns from his mistakes in Arizona.

  17. We either got bamboozled into hiring people taking an advantage of an opportunity and out of their depth, which will inevitably lead to everyone getting fired (honestly not the worst outcome). Or we got people who are unconventional and willing to look outside of the norm for marginal improvements, which I’d be fine with.

I think it’s the type of risk I appreciate in this spot. Just have zero trust in Pelley’s judgement that he got the right people.

  18. Of all the candidates this is what we get? I’m happy to eat crow later on if I’m wrong but this is a disaster.

  19. Shoulda went President- Gillis, VP- Sundin, GM- Chayka

  20. bruiser_blade

Well,it will be an interesting press conference tomorrow to say the least!

  21. Chayka has to fire Berube or I’m already losing faith lol

  22. JeffBroccoli

I’m so seriously bored of these fans who have to come online and stomp their feet and proudly yell about how they’re no longer going to be a fan, buy jerseys or watch games.

    Goodbye

  23. I don’t like it, but I really have no choice but to hope Chayka can prove me wrong.

  24. JeffBroccoli

I’m honestly fine to wait and see how this plays out. There wasn’t really a clear and obvious standout frontrunner for the role, and “safe” choices in the past like Tre or Lamoriello haven’t exactly worked wonders

It’s a little underwhelming but let it play out

  25. badboystwo

It’s really frustrating cus I love Mats. I will always love the guy and I feel like he’s just being the face of bad decisions now.

  26. TheCarrier89

While I don’t understand hiring Chayka, I have no choice but to be supportive of it. I’ll keep an open mind and hear what he has to say and let his actions dictate how I feel. I’ll be a leaf fan until I die so no point in stressing about a GM before he’s even started the job. We shall see how this goes.

  27. LongjumpingDiver8773

I’ll be very interested to hear, in Chayka’s own words, his vision for a hockey team in 2026. The league has changed a lot since he started with Arizona 10 years ago.

One way or another should be an interesting 5 months ahead leading up to puck drop of the regular season.

One thing that makes me happy is that I’m sure Willy is absolutely pumped to have Sundin on board.

  28. I’m an Aussie fan who has only been following the Leafs the last 3 seasons or so. Why is everyone so down in th dumps about this Chayka guy?

For all the talk about having the right ”structure“.. this is baffling.
