It’s a great summation of the situation, and it certainly feels like the leafs are in a very bad spot with Rogers as the owner. We may already be falling, but the hopeful side of me chooses to believe we are stood at the precipice right now. Either ownership/management find a way to turn this around, or we are looking at many years of pain. Very curious to see where this new management group decides to take the team, and more importantly, how involved Pelley is within it.

You can, to some extent, buy your way to victory in baseball. The jays have the 4th highest payroll in MLB. It is an easier calculation for a corporate owner to see the return on their investment, and playoff runs that captivate fans across Canada, like the Jays have had here and there, are measurably worth the investment.
You cannot, at all, buy your way to victory in the NHL, it being a salary cap league. Outside of some rebuilders, basically everyone is spends right up to the cap, so the teams are separated by more nuanced criteria: coaching, chemistry, play style, and development. Luck in signing players to favourable contracts and having them outperform is also a bigger factor. A corporate owner is just as likely to have these things figured out as any owner.
Ed Rogers will take from the leafs to give to the jays.

I rode an elevator with Ed Rogers and his entourage a number of years ago. Dude was an undeniable asshole as was the army of handlers that surrounded him. Keith Pelley is of that ilk.
Not just a hockey team. Recall that Ed fired AA right after the Jays’ ALCS run (AA then went on to lead Atlanta to a title a few years later).
Then he tried to fire Masai immediately after the Raptors won their title, but was vetoed by the other owners at the time (this was before he became the sole owner).
Ed Rogers is Canadian James Dolan. An idiot nepo baby who has no idea what the fuck he’s doing but thinks he’s a fucking genius.

God. People put wayyyyyyyyyyy too much importance on Ownership. They’ll either provide dollars to spend or they won’t. And the Leafs always do. The majority of the success of an nhl team happens cause of the quality of Hockey Ops and Management.
The ceo, owner doesn’t matter that much. They’ll hire a good GM or they won’t. And the GM will either build a winner or they won’t.
