Despite Samsonov's higher ceiling, based on pure consistency I would build around Vitek
The Capitals had a very good season, making the playoffs again. Good top 10 offense and decent defense–the PK was good but the PP was abysmal, considering the talent they can put on the ice with Ovi and Oshie. Of the RFA goaltenders, they will both be qualified. Of the UFAs, I don't see any of them returning, so, they are going to have to find some new faces. IMHO, the Caps will remain a playoff team, will be interesting to see what moves they decide to make. Backstrom is the big question mark, will he be able to play at all ? And Wilson is hurt as well,
Let me know your expectations for the Caps this off-season
I wonder if the Caps would be interested in Mark Scheifele? Looking at Capfriendly, I don't believe they would have the necessary assets.
i want to the capitals to get younger they need ot find a goalie that makes for the head coach Peter Laviolette
get rid of Laviolette, keep Sammy and get him a vet. Lose Mantha, lose Larsson. Let Protas, Mcmichael and AJF play more… think of trading Carlson for a real two way defencemen (has to be worth it for us) + Backstrom’s hip could be the end of him we never know [hope he’s okay]
Caps did way better than I expected, and almost had the Panthers by the throat in the 1st round. However…they face scary issues next season. Who knows if Backstrom will ever be the same (few players ever really get back to 100% after hip surgery). Wilson being out is another big blow. Would be nice to see Kuznetsov start to earn his paycheque. Team is aging, no prospects to get overly excited about, not looking good. Will not be surprised if they miss the playoffs next season.
Losing Nicky Would be devastating for us 😞 but the fact is we have an aging core group and it’s inevitable that we will have to say goodbye but it’s so hard to face.
I think the next time the caps will be a true contender is 23/24 if they're lucky with prospects
I could see the blues brining back Phoenix Cooley as a minor league goalie/NHL depth goalie
Above all, the Caps need to get younger – they need to see if Connor McMichael or Hendrix Lapierre can make the big leap to no. 2 center. Even if Backstrom does make it back next season, he was painfully slow and it was very apparent in the playoffs. He can still make excellent passes but he needs sheltered ice time.
This also means moving on from Lars Eller, Conor Sheary, and Carl Hagelin (if Hagelin can even play again).
Of the Caps UFA's — the only one I would think of bringing back is Johan Larsson. He looked good with Dowd and Hathaway but at the same time, one of Brian MacLellan's biggest mistakes as GM is overpaying for bottom-6 wingers.
As for the D, it's past time to see if former 1st rounders Alex Alexeyev and Lucas Johansen can contribute at the pro level.
As for goalie, I am hoping they can get Semyon Varlamov at a reasonable price — he makes the most sense among available goalies. I also wonder if Sergei Bobrovsky would be feasible if FLA ate a portion of his contract (EDIT — NVM, Bob has a no-movement clause so he would need to have to agree to waive that first).
Lots to mull over but above all, the Caps need to get younger and get more scoring depth. They haven't been able to keep with any of their playoff opponents since their Cup run. Fresher legs and more scoring threats would go a long way to changing that.
that mantha trade will come back to bite them, if it hasn't already; could they offer him or another veteran in a trade to arizona to lure chychrun out of the desert?
With hagelin on the brink of retirement or LTIR, I’d say larsson is a good keep, especially for a low cost, Irwin was serviceable when needed, other than that I’d let the rest of them walk. Backy also being on the verge of retirement or LTIR, would create another almost 9m in cap, move eller and that’s another 3.5 putting us around the 22mil mark for cap space(if all plays out), I think this team could have a huge turn around this off season if the right moves are pulled off and the right players are brought in. We shall see, this is almost like the final test for GMBM to see if he’s capable of building a seriously contending team or not. Id say vitek is prob on his way out as well. Lots of interesting ufa’s this year to put us back in the Stanley cup picture. Will be fun to watch and see.
I like your opinions but you should consider using a script, or sticking to it if you have one. Nearly 2 minutes explaining, re-explaining over and over about the uncertainties with Backstrom
Let's not forget that the Caps had signed Henrik Lundqvist, but lost him to heart problems, of all things. That the remaining meshminders did as well as they did, under the circumstances, was commendable. But they DEFINITELY could use a steadier presence in the paint.
Goaltending needs to be fixed. Doing anything other than losing in the first round isn't going to happen with either of these two. They need to decide if they really want to give one last shot at a run or just let the team slide into a rebuild. We'll be able to tell by what moves they make with the G pair.
Caps need some change, i think if they are going to be able to win a round in the playoffs they desperately need some change, whether thats a change in effort or players. Change needs to be priority number 1. With the potential loss of Backstrom long term id like to see either a trade for the rumored jt miller, or free agent signing in kadri or Malkin if possible more likely a cheaper nu 2 option will happen to allow the team to look for a goalie and maybe bring in a new bottom 6 d man but it would be nice to see another peice added that could contribute on a nightly bases and maybe help spark the struggling Mantha. I know this is wishful thinking but if we are gonna be running without a 2nd center in backstrom we need support for oshie on the second line. IMO Mantha is to unreliable he coasts through most games and only steps up the odd night. I think he simply needs to find a way to be more productive. Id give sheary the second line nod over him when wilson returns and until then i hope they can find a way to fit signing johannson into the roster, he is a good responsible player who makes good decisions with the puck, he is the type of player needed down the stretch and having that type of player on the depth charts can hopefully spark mantha to somehow be the player that we expected and gave up a lot to get. I just dont know what it is about him, i was really excited seeing him come out flying in the playoffs but after a couple games he let up and wasnt the same player. Depth wise as of right now i go
ovi kuz sheary/wilson
Johannsson/sheary lapierre oshie
Mantha Eller leason/mcmichael
Hathaway dowd mcmichael/fjalby
Carlson fehrevary
Orlov Jensen
Tvr alexeyev/irwin
In net i think you keep Samsonov, he may not be the most consistent in the regular season but i think if they bring in a new vet goalie like gm has said then he makes more sense as an option. come playoffs hes been steady and elevates his game that time of year, as a second option id prefer that to vanacek who looked shell shocked in the playoffs.
I think shultz vanacek larsson will be on their way out and with the potential long term to backstrom & hagelin i hope that we can Prioritize getting a true 1A option in net and secondly get that depth at center whether its through adding a player in free agency or trade. One thing i dont want to see is the nu 15 spot in the first round traded as i see there beeing some good potential to get a dropping forward falling into our draft spot my hope is that the caps draft a falling Lambert or Miroshnichenko to really boost our futures depth.
I know to any caps fans reading this youre probably thinking mcmichael is low in the charts having leason over him and that lapierre is no number 2, but i see a huge upside to lapierres game i think he provides more of an offensive spark and is a lot better with the puck right now than mcmichael, i think one thing the caps need in order to be more effective is another zone entry player and with lapierre i feel more confident in his ability to gain the zone and provide offense. I think Mcmichael has got all the makings to be a top 9 forward i just think he needs to get stronger on the puck and still has to find his game at the nhl level, hes a gifted player i just think he was inserted into the nhl roster maybe a year or 2 before he was ready. Leason looks nhl 3rd/4th ready and protas is on the fringe as well.
Main takeaways need to be find a goalie then a second line center this offseason. After that it really comes down to the players, and they need to find a way to get it done .
Great video, thanks for content
Many People who have never had hip trouble don’t understand how debilitating it can be. For many it is the first place you start to feel the hurt related to aging. Backstrom should probably retire. He is only 35.
Sammy has a higher ceiling but has proven to be a cancer in the locker room I would part ways with Sammy and keep vitek
I think after ovi retires they gotta start over and get another young stud and build around him I think they get a top pick and build around him
