The Avalanche had a week and a half break since their last game. That's not usually a good thing and it might be why they looked flat in much of the first period. As they get back in the swing of things I expect them to play back to their normal potential (scoring 4+ goals per game).
To be fair to Makar, that was a wacky looney tunes bounce right into O'Reilly's lap. Still a bad play, but really unlucky
Binni was solid, but given the pipes saved 5 of those shots, the score could have been vastly different if the avs just shot a bit tighter….
As a Blues fan, I'm just happy to be here. I feel like LA in the first round, playing with house money. More hockey to watch is always a good thing
Binnington better stand on his head for the rest of the series . Luckily for the blues Avs were a little rusty hitting posts . If it wasn’t for self inflicted mistakes this game wouldn’t have been close
8.9 %. So you're saying there's a chance!
Dang Tarasenko played last night?
With how insane Binner played and how many bounces they got, the fact the Blues couldn't steal this one makes me think they're going to struggle to win any. Avs were still dominant, they just didn't cash in on there chances as much as normal. Couple of fanned shots, 5 posts, and some incredible saves. Both goals Blues got we're simply from poor line changes that are easily fixable and weird bounces which happen. Feeling very confident after game 1, go Avs!
I am a job cooper/Lightning fan and one team fear is Colorado Avalanche.
Binnington didn’t play that well in my eyes. Avs missed at least 2 wide open nets and hit 5 posts. He did make some good saves but this wasn’t a strong 51-save performance
I watched part of this game. Very fun to watch. I don't have a team I'm rooting for. I am a Torey Krug fan so maybe the Blues …good first game
I feel like Binnington could have just as easily been pulled early had the puck not found the post so often.
"Only have to score once in OT"
Shots in OT Avs:13. Blues:0
Lol, Avs dominated, the blues didn't put up a fight binnington did and this isn't going to be much of a series cause binnington isn't going to play like that every night
Well, if the plan was for Binnington to steal games to win this series and they still found a way to lose anyway, this series is going to be a short one. Binnington will eventually not be hot, and the games will be 5-2.
I think the biggest adjustment Colorado made from last year's playoffs, became more physical. The Avs in 5 games have averaged, AVERAGED, 47.8 hits per game in the playoffs over 5 games. The preds had the most, at 53.75 hits per game in that series sweep. So the most physical team in the league and playoffs barely outhit the Avs. In comparison, St Louis? 26.43 in 7 games. The Avs in my unprofessional opinion has addressed their biggest weakness from the last 2 post seasons.
The Blues had almost everything go their way.
The bounces(luck) were 95% blues 5% Avalanche.
The Avalanche still won.
Overall gameplay was lopsided to an extreme if the bounces go even the Avalanche win in a blow out.
Edit: And Binnington stood on his head he can keep that up this series will be frustrating for Avs fans.
Good work! it is hard to find good hockey talk.
This game was close only in score. The Avs dominated in possession, shots, and chances. Binnington and posts kept this close. If the Blues are going to count on him to stand on his head every game, the series will be over quick. I even expect the posts not to be so kind in game 2 and the Avs will score 5+ goals.
Does anyone else experience crackling in the audio on this channel’s videos??
Outstanding analysis. That was a frustrating game to watch, as an Avs fan, but it looks to me like the Avs just refuse to lose. Their structured play seems to get better when they're angry.
I know completely off topic from the game but its been urking me all day. Do you think the bruins could somehow get the hawks to trade patty kane for debrusk,a prospect, and a first round pick + more maby?
As a blues fan, I'll admit, McKinnon is a beast. He'll possess that puck and skate circles around everyone without being touched much like Jaromir Jagr, Pavel Datsyuk and Patrick Kane. If only paryko would use his size and get nasty like Pronger did.
Neither team looked 100%. The Blues looked winded from the moment they took the ice. I think elevation played a part, but I don't think they even get to OT if the Avs aren't rusty.
Binnington was beaten cleanly 10 times, 5 posts 3 goals and 2 avalanche misses on wide open nets, lucky bounces kept the blues in the game, I don’t think he played as good as his stats show
Still going to be a good series but i think this game solidified my opinion that the avs will win – blues fan
comment about the 3 1st lines… When Schenn was centering barbashev and Kyrou, berube was rolling those 3 lines pretty consistently. whichever line was hot that night was getting more 5v5 ice time.
Ask any St. louis fan who our top line was and you’d probs get Buch-Thomas-Senko and a few Saad-O’reilly-Perron. Barby-Schenn-Kyrou imo is like a Checking 3rd line with some 1st line talent so I see why some fans might think it’s a first line. I think we have a 1a, 1b, and then a second line usage wise (a little more D than the first lines)
Blues fan. Two things i despise about the avalanche. First your owner is an SOB. Most stl sports fans agree on this. Second is kadri. Hes a dirty POS and was kind of disappointed colorado would bring on such a player. I get the intangibles and the whole 'you hate him unless hes on your team' but ive never liked his attitude. Many av fans have indicated hes turned over a new leaf, which if true is awesome, people deserve second chances. But after his crap in toronto and of course his hit on faulk last spring, i put him with tom wilson as players that dont deserve their name on the stanley cup. I feel im about to be 0 for 2 with that sentiment but it is what it is. Get rid of those 2 and colorado is my second favorite team. My first ever jersey was an avs sakic 19. Still in my closet 24 years later. Not surprised sakic built the team he has, just like yzerman. They realize the players you need to win, unlike toronto, but thats for another day.
I’m not really blaming Makar on that goal..the puck deflected off 4 shin pads and “luckily” landed on oreilly’s stick..
Avs in 5. Blues win a game at home with special teams. That’s it. And Cale Makar is better than everyone, that was just a small mistake.
As an aves fan, I know we have a little issue with second round. We won 6 in a row last year before losing 4 straight. Three years ago I said…3-5 years aves gonna in a cup. Last year I thought we were but seeing the team this year…..it’s a diff animal. I don’t want the aves to sweep the blues cuz I want them to stay grounded but seeing how the aves responded to being down for the first time in this playoffs……as far as I’m concerned is yes the aves won last night, to them going into game 2, it’s a new series and it’s 0-0. And I think that’s their mentality they have this year.
I don't think binnington was as good as people saying he was if they avs don't hit a million posts the game is really out of hand
Bennington did not play that good in game 1 other than Overtime. The Avs hit 5 posts, missed empty nets, whiffed on shot, Makar wasnt playing like himself. The Avs played 70% of themselves and still dominated all 4 periods.
In my opinion this is going to be one of the best series of the playoffs, I am a avid AVS fan, but also a hockey fan. I take nothing away from the blues, with that being said, the AVS will win the series but it isn't going to be a cakewalk.
Avs in 5
42 years old. StL native. Been a Blues fan since I can remember. Had a feeling after round 1 that Binnington was back in form. He showed it in Game 1 against Colorado. It's my only hope for the Blues to pull off the upset in this round. I agree w/ HGS. Avs in 6. They are just too good. Their speed compared to the Blues is nuts. They looked like they were sprinting the entire game. I personally believe that Binnington will be on form for this series, but he will need help. The Blues have to increase their intensity and not look like they are skating in sand. I know the Avs have got speed, but Kyrou was the fastest in the league this year and even he looked slow compared to the Avs.
As for the complaints I've seen about all the shots off the posts in game 1…. A post is not a shot on goal. It's very close to a shot on goal, but it still isn't. Some are luck. Some are not. These are professionals. Especially with the talent that is on the Avs. I think people aren't giving Binnington enough credit here. It's very possible the Avs hit so many posts because of the way Binnington was playing. They were forcing their shots to the edges as much as possible to beat Binnington because he was covering the net so well.
Lastly, hats off the the Avs in overtime. Like, really amazing job. I thought they were going to falter. I thought they were going to get frustrated and start taking unnecessary chances to beat Binnington only to let up some bad break away and allow the Blues to sneak out with a stolen win. They didn't. They stayed on their game plan and played it to perfection. Had they lost game 1 in this way (allowing frustration to take over), I'd say the Blues would be in good shape to win the series as the frustration would build. Instead, they kept their cool and played their game. Yeah, I still see Avs in 6.
St. Louis almost never out shoots their opponents however they still win. It’s just what they do. I saw terrible officiating in this game massively in favor of Colorado. It’s easy to get 53 SOG and pull out an overtime win with the stuff they let go in this game.
Also I couldn’t understand why the blues got booed every single time they slowed it down for a shift change.
I’m calling Blues in 7. Avs are a great team but I don’t see them keeping up the pressure against a locomotive of skill and goaltending. Don’t forget Ville Husso.
Let's break down the blues goals, not the avs goals? Lol
Blues defensive depth just isnt as deep as the Avs defense depth imo. That may kill them in the end trying to deal with an explosive offensive team on all fronts (offense and defense)
3 power plays for the Avs vs 1 for the Blues also helped the Avs to a win.
Referees are very bad. The NHL should do something to stop this partisanship bull.
