Well, if history is any indicator, Edmonton is going to fall off a cliff by the end of the month and revert to the perennial disappointment that people have become so accustomed to.
Still would love to send Hynes down to Milwaukee to work on his game, though.
So many problems it’s impossible to list them all
Pain. Lost the game in the first period and didn’t have any fight until way too late. Same thing, year in and year out.
I stand by the statement I made to a friend a couple games ago: Tomasino was the key to keeping everything running. He may not have played in Europe, but he was there. So go ahead and book him a ticket to Calgary. Send Karl Taylor and Parssinen with him.
if you even think about saying something like “well at least the boys battled back!” I’m fucking stealing something out of your house
We’ve just reversed the streak. The Oilers didn’t beat Pekka for 5 years or something. This is going to be a long wait…
How good is this Bedard fellow?
Two Positives:
1. An actual NHL power play was in effect tonight.
2. Boys actually played a semi-decent 3rd period (Edmonton didn’t need to play well though).
Negatives:
1. Horrible defense, passing, and overall conditioning as the boys have constantly looked slow and outworked.
2. Juice is rather tight and we need him to *loosen* up.
3. Hynes’s system. He seems like a very nice and respectable guy, but as a coach, he’s not doing it for this team.
4. Top players have looked like shit and the boys have looked defeated more often than not.
5. More things that I don’t have the energy to name.
All in all, this team is too talented to perform the way they have been. I know they’re probably more frustrated than we can even imagine, but being a fan sucks ass right now.
Random thoughts from the game:
Coaching: We still have no identity, we still take too many penalties. These are coaching / system issues that persist from last year.
System: I cannot figure it out. It mostly seems like desperately maintaining puck possession on offense. Dump, chase, dump around the board to hope one of us gets it, shot from the blue line, recover, dump to the blue line, shot. We can’t get the puck away from the boards. Defense I have no idea. Maybe a weird zone. Our actual defense seems to be confused and I saw our D run into our C a few times.
Hits: Preds have 52!!! hits as the time of writing but I can’t remember one. Meanwhile Edmonton has 16 and I can picture 3 of them in my head. Maybe it’s time to emphasize quality over quantity. Too many fucking penalties and it has to be in part due to emphasizing physicality.
It seems like we have the same identity problem we had last season that ultimately was defined by the HERD line. But this season we should be better than last season due to free agent upgrades and familiarity with Hynes’ system. Why are we playing a physical, dump and chase game when we have such a skilled team? Josi, Carrier, Duchene, Forsberg, Tolvanen, Tomasino, Glass. Yet here we are playing physical hockey against speed teams even though we’ve got to be one of the oldest, slowest teams in the NHL.
This team reminds me of watching Cody McLeod play. I was at a game and watching him specifically. He worked really hard to follow through on his check and laid a solid hit on the opposing defender. It was right in front of me. I saw the defender laugh and congratulate him on the good hit because their team went and scored. Cody was so busy trying to “do his job” that he forgot to back check. The puck was cleared before Cody lined up his hit and the goal was in when Cody was still touching the player. He skated back to the bench from the opposite side of the bench.
Why did Sherwood start on the 2nd line and then Tolvanen get moved up later in the game? I’m curious. Is it to motivate Sherwood? Punish Tolvanen? Or did you reward Sherwood and then IMMEDIATELY punish him after his penalty? The word about Glass was that he started on the 2nd line and then was benched through the 3rd after letting one goal in. Today he’s scratched. Maybe the problem is people are so afraid of making mistakes that’s all they can think about? Grasping at straws here – I can’t figure it out.
Ultimately there are two issues that boil down to one issue: identity and system. Coaching is behind both.
Well that sucked
Silver lining? Frosty goals??? We did scored when we had more players than they did?
I shamelessly picked up Campbell in my Fantasy league
Guys I’ve got it if we healthy scratch tolvanen next game that’ll fix it
This roster shit is insane. Hynes is absolutely blowing my mind with these roster moves. Glass/Tolvenen should in no fucking way be scratched for Kiefer Sherwood and fucking Cole Smith. These dudes are invisible and legitimately AHL players. Same with Sanford. I’ve had enough. Play. Your. Best. Players. drop the herd line to the fourth and give me a Tomasino – Glass – Tolvanen line for more than 1 game for fucks sake.
As always, fire Hynes and fire Poile.
Fire Hynes, find a coach that doesn’t start an AHL line as the fourth line and try this:
Duchene – Granlund – Forsberg
Nino – Johansson – Tomasino
Tolvy – Glass – pull up someone from the AHL
Jeannot – Sissons – Trenin
We absolutely have the roster to play a more modern game, but Hynes would rather have two checking lines.
If we were in a rebuild, this would still be an embarrassment for the players. I can’t imagine what must be going on in the locker room right now (or at least what should be)
At least we now have a double-digit power play percentage. 13.2… yay?
