Tomas Hertl (6) scored when he redirected Kevin Labanc's pass past Jake Allen stick side from the slot 2:29 3rd. Logan Couture (13) 1A shot a goal between Jake Allen's pads on a clear breakaway after taking Matt Benning's long pass up the middle 3:44 3rd. Tomas Hertl (7) ENG 17:46 3rd. Kaapo Kahkonen 28 SH/ 28 SA .1.000 SV% W 2x in 7GP to end 0-2-1 skid. W 7th straight games all in reg @ MTL since 2-0 L 3/21/15. SJS allowed 6 PPG in 25GP and led NHL w/91.2% success rate on PK. SJS blocked 28 SH plus 5 by Nick Bonino & 4 by Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Kaapo Kahkonen 3rd NHL shutout, had 2 w/MIN in 2020-21.
Tomas Hertl thought that a couple of big blocks on 5 on 3 was a game changer but he felt so happy for Kaapo Kahkonen doing great, looking confident in net, making good plays on the PK. It wasn't easy cuz SJS gave up some chances but it was a really really strong game for Kaapo Kahkonen. David Quinn thought SJS had a good swagger & thought that this was Kaapo Kahkonen's best game of the year where he looked really comfortable in net when he got back to the level that SJS expected him to be. SJS killed MTL w/the success rate SJS had, SJS had a swagger to themselves when they killed penalties, SJS had swagger for a while killing penalties. It wasn't the most smooth game for SJS but Matt Nieto thought SJS just stuck to the process & if SJS got hemmed in, they just locked it down, got through that shift, didn't give up massive opportunities for SJS to score & obviously Kaapo Kahkonen back there was a wall for SJS.
This was SJS 2nd straight shutout in MTL. SJS have a shutout streak of 140:14 @ Bell Centre, including a 21 SA shutout by Adin Hill in 5-0 W @ MTL on 10/19/21. All but 3 SJS players Luke Kunin, Steven Lorentz & Oscar Lindblom had at least 1 blocked SH. Logan Couture recorded his 13G & 9G in Nov, that G was also his 7th in past 8GP. Kaapo Kahkonen recorded his 1st shutout w/SJS @ MTL.
