I preferred this matchup format personally.

Gonna be a exciting run for the last 4 spots

    I’d love a 1 vs 16 format like they had from ’79 through ’81.

    This’ll never come back though.

I think what we consider competitive matchups would fluctuate over time. Would be interesting to see some comparisons from recent years actual vs alternative.

Surely other alternative starting rounds would have probably changed the final outcome. Gives us stuff to talk about for sure!

This year still going to be awesome though!

Hey we’re not playing Tampa, we should def Change it to this!

  6. This looks awesome. But Bettman says we don’t want it. According to all zero people he checked with.

Tampa Bay vs New Jersey would be a fantastic match-up. One of the current Golden standards in the league vs a team trying to reach the standard Tampa Bay has set.

Rangers vs Toronto would be fantastic. Two teams with lots of firepower who can also play good defense as well.

Edmonton vs Minnesota would also be a great match-up as well. Edmonton with their high-flying offense vs Minnesota’s stingy defense.

The NHL needs to bring back the 1 vs 8 format.

I love it. It’s lame having such limited possibilities for the first 2 rounds

After some quick googling: is 1-8 just « all that matters is your standing in the conference, unless you’re division leader in which case you’re guaranteed a spot in the top-4 seeds »?

As a Rangers fan I would have loved to see us sv.s the maple leafs, unfortunately there is a very low chance of that happening now a days

After svech got out for the rest of the season this is the first rd matchup I’m hoping for the Pens lol

It doesn’t even make sense to have divisions anymore you play every team twice that’s 62 games right there, okay everyone in your conference 1 more time that’s 79 games (alternate home/away every year) 3 more in conference games leftover… Might as well just have East/West be 1 division each then seed 1-8 it literally makes so much sense, divisions don’t

  13. I like what you’re going for but the point percent would have been a better indicator. Colorado for example is ranked 6th but has 3 games in hand. It is highly likely they’ll earn 2 points in 3 games to jump up ahead of some teams.

But, ultimately, the year end is all that matters. It’ll be interesting to see the differences (if any) at seasons end.

I much prefer the divisional rivalries the current system provides, in fact I’d rather go back to the 80s and get rid of the whole wild card/crossover thing.

That’s a much worse 1st round than divisions match ups. Also the standings are so close any change is essentially irrelevant.

I hate Vegas. Bring it on! We will have Dubois healthy and Conner rolling by then

  17. Camulius73

    Do. Not. Want. The. Wild.

Those guys have had our number for awhile and force the Oilers to play slow.

  18. Hufflepuff_Baseball

My dumbass was reading them vertically and thought why tf are we playing New Jersey

  19. cote112

Much more fun and much better for TV ratings

  20. GQMatthews

The NHL might have to condemn you to hang for witchcraft

  21. ChanelNo50

I know we have been doing this for a whole but I really don’t effing get it and I want to go back to the old system

  22. jlando40

Give me a leafs oilers final PLEASE

  23. Hockey media gets bored with the playoff format, starts floating changes to sell clicks, NHL changes format. Rinse and repeat.

  24. TenRingRedux

The Eastern Division, where dreams go to die.

  25. bigwreck94

I want absolutely nothing to do with a Minnesota/Edmonton series. Minnesota has had the Oilers number for over a decade. No thank you.
