Marty Brodeur is, in a large part, responsible for the number of New Jersey fans present today. When they arrived in New Jersey, the Devils weren't beneficiaries of the overly generous expansion draft system we have today. They set up shop 6 miles away from an original 6 team and in order to watch their games at home, a fan needed to buy cable, while the blueshirts were free on channel 9. The odds were definitely stacked against them staying in New Jersey, much less winning 3 Stanley Cups.
Hats off to Martin Brodeur and all he has done for the franchise!
