Something else to consider (regarding the draft), Dubas has a history of trading down. And with this draft class being regarded as unusually deep, I wouldn’t be disappointed if Dubas traded down to acquire more assets. Maybe you can trade that 14th pick to draft later in the 1st round, and get back a roster player, another prospect, or a pick in one of the rounds where the Penguins don’t have a pick.
I don't really care very much about the future right now. How many years of sidney crosby do we have left?
When he retires, there's going to be FAR more than an empty roster spot on this team. Just because you even land a high first round pick, it doesn't guarantee you a high level player that will have an impact at the NHL level.
You could draft 1st overall and get a pretty solid third liner.
Also, the penguins aren't in any position to hold onto this pick. They need WAY too much right now to give this group the best chance to win.
I for one would be VERY disappointed if they held onto this pick and didn't go get a top goaltender with it.
Or use it to trade away a contract
The mess Hextall left with this current roster made this first round selection an absolute luxury that they just cannot afford to keep.
