I’m not really a fan of these stat card graphs, particularly when it comes to defense.

Without context, you’d look at this card and be lead to believe that Addison really played way, way better defensively than Ek (apparently one of our worst defenders), or Brodin? Yeah, no. A lot of these graphs are dictated simply by zone starts, look at the numbers. Ek started only 22% if his shifts in the offensive zone, while Addison started there 43%. Foligno/Rossi/Freddy line looks to be the best defensively, but then you see they started **70%** of the time in the offensive zone. They were almost never relied on to play defensively, whereas Ek was ALWAYS starting in the defensive zone. Who do you think really played a better defensive game? To further throw into the mix, imagine if that goal didn’t get waived off, how suddenly skewed and different these lines become.

Whoever scores points are just always going to be at the top, which yeah makes sense, but really how useful is that? So basically you have a graph chart that sorts players first by how many points they got, second by how favorable their zone starts were, and then sprinkle in a couple of outliers where true game-changers (good and shit) will be near either end.
