I do not want him, and isn’t their ask very high?

moot point. we’re not getting him – the ask was way too high. we’re most likely riding out the rest of the year with the vitek / daws tandem

We need a long term goalie, but those are hard to find and we could also use an upgrade right now. Pretty simple imo

The Devils will get hosed for a goalie…it’s the worst kept secret in the NHL, the Devils need goaltending..everyone knows, and teams willing to part with their goalies will demand a king’s ransom..to me it ain’t worth it, it’s now an off-season issue to address.

People lack patience. Getting Markstrom would be a huge misstep and a squandering of assets based on the type of return they seem to be seeking for him.

He will probably be better at 42 than anything we have now

« we » is the people that thought this is/was a win or bust year. It’s not.

We have to solve goalie and defense, but not right now at trade deadline rates.

Because long term goalies rarely present themselves in the trade market. If a team has an elite or near-elite goalie under 30, they’re locking him up whenever possible. I’m unsure about this too, but 2 more years of control for an elite goalie is pretty good business and it’s going to be tough to find something better than that, even in the offseason.

Edit: I’m just providing context, why is this sub incapable of normal discourse.

The team does absolutely need a long-term goalie but they’re not going to get one just entering their prime that’ll still be there in 2-6 years from now when that window is going to open the widest so they want to find a guy who they believe in but is 2-3 years away and a veteran to provide the team stability for the next couple years as well as for their goalie of the future to have to beat out to win the job and establish himself.

Markstrom could be a great fit but it sounds like the asking price is too high. Expect them to bring in a replacement for Vanicek but they’ve got to be after a younger guy as well.

I thought the move was to go for an offer sheet on Swayman. Still an option in the offseason.

I would rather give getting Kaapo Kahkonen a shot if the price is right

If we were a little closer to being comfortably in a playoff spot I’d say go for it but it’d be really tough to stomach missing after getting him.

  13. Go after Casey Desmith from Vancouver at end of year. He becomes UFA. At 32 it won’t be a long term solution but something to bide some time to figure it out.

  14. The idea with getting him would be to buy two years in the crease to either let goalies in our system to grow, or to give us time to get the next guy after him.

The only goalie “available” that meets our window and need is Sarros. Nashville is rebuilding and they have a potential all star coming up. But the cost to get him will probably be too much this season especially how Nashville isn’t out of the playoffs contention yet.
