    Fitz doesn’t even know what he wants to do. Says « We need a goalie » and still hasn’t gotten one. Says « we aren’t trading Toffoli, we still feel like we can make it » now Toffoli is in play. Unbelievable.

    Penguins and Caps are sellers and are ahead of us in the standings. Sure we can still make it but it would be insanely irresponsible to not listen to offers.

    As much as I like Toffy he really isnt ideal to extend past 2 years. He probably wants 4+

    Fitz said term was an issue. I am glad hes shopping him and open to getting something for him rather than sign a bad deal. Get a first or a 2nd and a prospect and use that as trade capital. Even if we go on a hail mary run and sneak in, this team has too many deficiencies to win a cup. Take the long view.

    I wouldn’t mind trading for a goalie and then flipping the gains for something in the summer. It’s either sign him for 2-3 years too long or getting a huge asset now to address a position of weakness. Meier can take that right wing spot.

    I wonder if Boston would consider something around Ullmark for toffoli. Swayman is clearly their guy for the future.

    Hope we send him back to LA. Kings likely play Oilers first round, where they probably get bounced and their first ends up in the late teens. That’s some decent value for a goalie trade.

    I think trading Toffoli is absolutely necessary but holy fucking shit is it humbling to go from buyers back to being sellers in one year

    I’d like to think the conversation with Toffoli is that we can deal him to give him a chance to win a cup with a contender and then offer him something like a 4x5mil to return after.

    We hopefully get a first round pick and he still can come back and get decent money/term on a team that should be competitive for the remainder of his contract. Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but that’s what I’m hoping.

    Edit: If I’m being completely delusional thinking this can actually happen please let me know. I don’t know how often a team has traded a pending UFA at the deadline then signed him after to come back. If it’s unlikely I’d rather see him be extended then lose him. He’s performed how we wanted the Palat trade to pay off. People need to realize we can’t ice a team of young 20somethings if we want to compete for real. That includes a goaltender.

    This makes sense, he wants term, he deserves term, and that’s something we can’t give him. Were we to change our minds then this can be revisited after we get something for him. In all likelihood, he’ll make Columbus very happy in June.
