If they can finish the season playing like that next season looks bright.
How could Dubas not have known to sign Bunting as an UFA last offseason when they are both out of Toronto? The Reilly Smith trade over a Bunting signing shows Dubas doesn't know what this team needs. He should of also signed Daniel Sprong out of Seattle (66GP/21G/25A/46Pts) instead of Detroit (68GP/17G/23A/40pts). I like the Jesse Puljujarvi move and Bunting is perfect. Now just get head coach Mike Suckagain to resign this offseason and let's start fresh.
The problem is younger talented players need opportunities like on the top two lines and power play to succeed
8 goals on Colorado and Carolina. We can thrive on that kind of production – especially looking at who got points.
Dubas needs to remove Sully's option to play these aging legs. Dumping Carter for a bag of pucks would have at least given a roster spot to young wheels.
The only way this team has a chance next season is if these "kids" and a few more get a chance to add their energy and talents. Doc and Jesse p. were forechecking machines. Who would have known having fast, young and hungry guys on the fourth line would create an "energy" line.
The influx and success of youth is a breath of fresh air! #LetsGoPens!
Great to see our team energised for once this season. Now the biggest problem in my eyes is 2 line C. Could Dubas acquire Draisaitl for Smith/Rakell and a million 1 round picks?
ESPN didn’t show it on my app so I didn’t get to see the young guys. Sounds like I missed a lot.
Fire sully
Fire Jarry
This is one reason I tolerate October games. The young kids get to play. Also, does it seem to you they are still playing the previous team they played, rather than the team that they are playing?
I really don't think this team as nearly as bad as people think. I mean then put up 8 goals against the Hurricanes and the Avslanche. Two of the best teams in the league.
Jesse Pullijarvi was a man possessed out there all of a sudden. If he can play like that on a consistent basis you won’t be able to take him out of the lineup again!
The Penguins and Pirates have this issue in common with the GM and coach. They are stuck in their ways. They are stuck playing the guys with "experience" regardless if the results aren't desirable. Then injuries happen and you find out that the younger guys are a much better choice and hungry to win. Good point on the Gruden shift!
Every team, even great seasoned ones, need youth. Youth bring energy and change.
call me crazy but it was great seeing some players looking happy to be there.
I agree. Problem is how are they going to do that with all the MNC's and other vet contracts making this team cap-cuffed? They can't just send everyone down to WBS or sit as healthy scratches. You can't suggest holding together this core and at the same time want "the kids" to play. And it would only be that much more difficult if they had signed Jake. This team was built to be non-kid friendly when Hextall was here, then FSG took over, and soon put Dubas in the unfortunate situation of doubling down on their cup or bust vision with forcing him to keep the core and Sullivan while building around it all like it's 2015 again. The ONLY reason some of these "kids" are playing now is because of injuries (some real, some exaggerated) to get them into the lineup. If this team was youth friendly, Ty Smith would have been given a real shot at some point.
If this team was still 6 or fewer points out of the playoffs, these injuries wouldn't be used as excuses and neither Poulin, Ivany or Gruden would be on the team right now because they'd still mistakenly believe the season was worth saving and that means playing the one-way contracts over the AHL guys. This is a token youth movement only because it doesn't matter anymore. The problem is, Malkin and Letang don't matter anymore either, but no one…not ownership, the fans, or DK wants to hear it. They'd rather play a whole season of meaningless, losing hockey, than see either of those two leave. So why bother with youth if it's still only a half-hearted gesture? Dubas knows it, but he can't act on it or even speak the truth of the matter because he's being held hostage by the whims and desires of Sid and FSG. If Rutherford knew it over 4 seasons ago, you better believe Mr. Analytical knows it now. All that matters is the inevitable jersey raising of numbers 71, 58 and 87. For me, I hope it happens ASAP so this team can finally get on with building appropriately towards another championship caliber team in pot-haste fashion.
Kids mean youth, and youth means not a bunch of old vets with some kids tacked on who still feel obliged to cater to their long established and molding presence in the locker room and can't really put their stamp and signature on the team because of a coach and culture that precludes it from being allowed.
Dubas isn’t wrong about the team needing to get younger. That’s why he traded Guentzel. I love Jake as much as the next person, but the last thing this team needs is a player over 30 with a big fat cap hit.
It’s fine to have veteran players, but you need to have some youth to go along with it.
Look at these former Pens players: John Marino, Mike Matheson, Ryan Poehling, Teddy Blueger, Danton Heinen, Jared McCann, Jamie Oleksiak, Evan Rodrigues, Daniel Sprong, Alex Nylander… how is it that other teams can get the most out of these players, and Pittsburgh can't? These players are doing much better on their other teams than they ever did in Pittsburgh. Why can't the Pens get the most out of these guys? If it's the system, then the system needs to change because it's proving too difficult to build a 23-man roster around.
If the team had not given up on most of these guys, they would already be younger because they were replaced with older, slower guys. The lineup would have 4-line and 3-pair depth and be younger and faster. At the time each of these players left, I questioned why. My thoughts on these guys weren't wrong, because other teams have proven their worth.
I will always respect Coach for winning two Cups, but he did not make the most of these players and they found success under a different coaching system. That speaks volumes to me about what is wrong. Maybe he's not a good development coach.
Hopefully Dubas doesn't add a single player over the age of 30 this offseason … not one. They already have Eller (which is actually good) and Acciari and Nieto on the roster next season, and hopefully they will at least just waive Nieto and send him on his way. I can't see that happening with Acciari at $2M AAV. So if you want Sullivan to play younger players, then don't give him any options to play older players. Simply don't sign anyone like Hinostroza, Harkins, Zahorna, etc. If Sullivan comes to you asking for more bottom 6 guys, simply give him Ponomarov, Poulin, Puustinen, Gruden, Puljujarvi, etc. and say there you go.
