1. I agree with Marty. In the 90s & and 00s, goalies started a ton without rest. Marty was also a hybrid goaltender who could stand up or play butterfly as needed. In today's league, the majority of netminders play butterfly, but that shouldn't deter a goalie from playing 5 games in a row when, most weeks, there is a day of rest in-between games. The over reliance on numbers & data is overrated to me. I don't think it has zero merit, but it shouldn't dictate lines or starting one goalie over the other. Computers are good, but they aren't ever going to be a substitute to human intuition & discernment.

  2. It’s crazy how growing up watching Marty (Best Goalie in the world) Never worried about goaltending issues 😂 But now is a main issue for the Devils … Never could have seen that coming ! God I miss those days 😅

  3. The NJD players play 60min a game like Dawes or do they switch up and sit on the bench every 45sec?? Dumb comparison. Not at all the same. If you switched up goalies every shift than maybe but it’s totally different. No players gets 60min+ of ice time a game.

  4. It's hard to believe modern elite goalies can't handle at least 60 starts a year. Personally, elite goalies should be starting 70 games a year, and the backups should get throwaway games against bottom teams. Right now, there isn't a single NHL goalie with 60 starts, although Saros and Georgiev are likely to reach 60 games by the end of the season. Can you imagine an NHL where legends like Hasek, Brodeur, Roy, Lundqvist, etc, only started 50 games?

  5. It's wild that the devils can't find a #1 goalie. Even if we limit the amount of games for a number 1… he has to play at least 60 to 65 games for us!!

  6. I guess we found our main guy behind the bench for many years to come. His name? Data Analytics

  7. Analytics can definitely have a negative impact with things. Elite goalies could be easily playing 65+ games imo a lot of the times you have to go with your gut instinct. Go with the flow of the game and flow of our players

  8. I agree with all what Marty said. However, he said, there is a very limited to amount of workhorses left in the game, elite goaltenders. If we cant get one (and why would we), whats the next best thing to have? A reliable tandem, sounds a lot easier to get. I hope they trade for Saros, or perhaps Ullmark. I dont want Markstrom. I miss the Marty years. Best of all time, followed closely by Hasek and Luongo imho.

  9. unfortunately we live in a different time, where the youth in general, are a bunch of wusses…work ethic is nearly a thing of the past with kids today. I agree…a good goalie should be playing 70 games a season.

  10. Forget about Markstrom. His stats fell off a cliff last month. He is washed. maybe exactly because he is old and plays too much in todays fast paced game. Forget about Saros. He'll ask 9M at least in one year. Plus in one year Little Hughes will need a big salary bump ( maybe 4M) Holtz too if he is still with the Devils( probably 3-4M too) Thats around 10M cap increase for just these three players. Cap space will go up by 4-5M in 2025. Forget about Markstrom and Saros. Just keep the current goalie duo (maybe get Stolarz instead of Kahkonen) for one year and if they play good extend them for 2 more years. Better spent money to improve Defense and bottom six and get bigger down the middle.

  11. I don't care if it's a tandem or a #1 plus backup situation. Either way can work. It depends who we have and/or who we can get.

  12. If they go Kahkonen/Allen next year i think Kahkonen would be the #1 and Allen the backup. The reverse is crazy. Kahkonen seems solid but hes unproven so itd be a risk. Id love to see Saros here. Maybe Ullmark. Markstrom is getting older by the minute and he sounds a bit touchy and a little inconsistent.

  13. Brodeur is absolutely correct. I’ll never believe the way they do it now is better. The goalie doesn’t even do anything for half the game most of the time. Some nights they are busier than others, but that is still no excuse to baby them as much as they do now a days. 60 games for starters. If I recall correctly, there was a year or two where the backup for Brodeur didn’t qualify for the Jennings award because Marty played so much. No wonder why goalies today are emotionally weak and have issues breaking out of slumps.
Edit: 4 out of 5 Jennings awards went to Marty solo.

  14. Great Commentary. I agree. It should be one Goalie playing the majority. They're players. Let them play. If it becomes too much for them let them say it. Athletes know their limits. Analytics etc. is great but in the end it's just numbers. Not a player on the ice. Numbers shouldn't be a deciding factor.

You and I have talked about the " Big Game hunting" I don't think it's going to happen. It's going to be Allen and Kahk with someone from Utica in and out. I have a feeling the logic is going to be well it's working now so it should work again. We'll see I guess.

I feel bad for Vitek and Schmidt. They showed a lot of promise. Really sucks they fell apart. I hope both turn it around.

  15. Jack Allan is signed through next year for $1.9 million. He is not going anywhere and I think the Devils are going to one of the Boston goalies , maybe Swayman.

  16. Dangle destroyed Marty for this on their latest pod. Called Marty a horrible executive and that it’s his fault devils goaltending is worst in history etc. Also, Adam insinuated Marty/organization did something crappy to Vitek. Didn’t say what. Everyone on the pod seemed to agree that the only reason Marty collected stats was bc of the trap, no illegal hits, and no 2-line pass. Just a brutal take brimming w ignorance.

  17. I'm digging the Kappo and Allen combo for a fraction of the cost of another huge contract that will bury us (one injury) if it doesn't work out. Spread out the money on the defense and build depth on the bottom 6. Best thing Fitz did was getting rid of Toffoli who kept Timo off of PP1 and firing Lindy

  18. It has infuriated me this whole season that Maurice has started Bob so many games despite Stolarz outplaying him. However, people have pointed out that Stolarz has only started against ONE current top 10 team this season compared to Bob having a marquee opponent basically every start. I’m very concerned about Bob’s play lately, but at the end of the day, he is our #1, and Maurice/the management must know better than me…

  19. Flyers lose, Capitals lose, Detroit lose.
Devils only game on Friday night. New Jersey is going to make the playoffs.
Off all of our schedules I think it comes down to the Flyers game at the end winner of that game will be 3rd in the metro. Washington and Detroit got Hot to early. Devils make it in
Toffoli just didn’t fit with our chemistry on our team played a lot slower paced, even Winnipeg struggling adding him to the lineup I think he’d be a good fit in Boston/LA/Florida but fast teams not a chance
