Anyway… how good are the Bills going to be this year? It’s all projection based on potential.
Potentially guys like Bernard, Benford, Rousseau, Elam, Rapp, Brown, Shakir, Cook, Kincaid and Torrence can take a step forward. Potentially Allen can improve on his decision making… and potentially none of those things will happen.
I’m looking specifically at the development of Dorian Willams. With the style of defense that Buffalo plays now with these smaller matchup LB’s… it’s inevitable that they are going to get hurt and miss time… especially if they play against teams that like to run the ball. If Willam’s can make the jump in year two it will go a long way in ensuring that we don’t find ourselves in the painful position we were in last season.
McDermott doesn’t only have a long history of developing secondary players but his track record of producing elite LB’s stretches all the way back to his days in Carolina. I’d argue that his LB track record is even more impressive than that of safety and CB.
Success and failure for the coming season will largely come down to injuries as it always does. The Bills over performed on defense last season considering the injuries and I for one don’t believe that Hyde or Poyer were nearly as bad as people say. With what they had at CB and LB for large swaths of the season, yet still managed to hold 11 teams to 21 or fewer points… I’d say that Poyer and Hyde were the only thing that held the defense together.
I also disagree that Brady is a better OC than Dorsey. Dorsey won a lot of games and Allen had the 2nd best season of his career in 2022 under Dorsey. Meanwhile Brady was dog 💩 in Carolina and the offense didn’t look great down the stretch under Joe in “23. The defense carried the team most of that stretch, especially after the trade deadline when Douglas came aboard.
The sample size on Brady is too small and the production, especially in the passing game just wasn’t there to put that much confidence in him.
Fingers crossed though… I hope he works out. I need to see it first before I’m believing.
