I am not sure where all the speculation comes from. The idea that you can trade Marner for two or more quality players is a little baffling considering he is a proven non performer in playoffs. Is the suggestion that there is a GM out there looking to avoid winning the Cup by giving up quality guys in a trade ? It is more likely that Marner will play out his contract and go to a team not in contention for a lower amount, not a raise.

It all depends on what kind of lifestyle he lives off ice . If he wants the slow lane it's Seattle. If he wants The Night Life, it's Philly .
The truth: If the Leafs truly think that Marner is the problem, then Marner's trade value is not high right now (not a great contract; serious playoff production drop off from last year; childish tantrums on the bench that elicited public rebuke from his teammates). Expect other teams to realize this, and for them not to be offering Markstrom, Andersen, or any other high value targets in exchange.
If Marner really is The Big Problem with the Leafs' early playoff exits, then here is the real value of trading him: you get rid of a player that is rightly or wrongly perceived as The Problem, and you send a message to the Leafs' core that their repeated playoff failure is unacceptable and that no one is untouchable. If management accomplished all of that, but only got a bag of pucks and a talented high school third liner in return, it would show everyone how damn serious management is about fixing the problem. THAT is the true value of a Marner trade. Anything else you get in return is gravy.
Because if Marner really is worth a Markstrom or Andersen, or anything of high trade value, you are telling me that you think Marner is high value. If you think he is high value, then you are admitting that he is not The Problem that everyone says he is. But we all know what the problem is. I know what the problem is. Leafs' fans know what the problem is. Every other team around the league knows what the problem is (Tkachuk KNOWING that the Bruins would win? How insulting, but how true). Hopefully Leafs' management knows what the problem is. The Leafs' core needs to be split up, even if the short term return seems low.

Fun fact – Zadarov has the same # of playoff points as Matthews and Marner combined. Now if that doesn't rub salt in the Leaf fans and media's wound I don't know what would. And they didn't want to pay the price for this guy from Calgary – rotfl. He was available at the trade deadline.

Marner maybe is too dumb not to realize he needs a career reset. Nevertheless, I'd like to see him going to Pittsburgh so he can make more than Crosby or Malkin. Or how about Marner for Bedard? Leaf fans probably think this is reasonable. Nothing sells better than a damaged star player whom everyone wants out of town. Other teams are salivating over the prospect of picking up a player who vanishes during the playoffs. Stop! Just stop! You're killing me. 😄

Leafs would need to either retain 4-6 million in a trade for a young cheap player or take back 8-10 million in older over the hill players. Chicago could be a possibility for Jones straight up or draft picks with the Leafs retaining a large portion of his contract.

I think the Seattle trade is the best for both teams and it’s feasible that Marner could waive to go there, I suggested a similar trade on some boards. I think it may be a bit rich for Seattle and perhaps adding a depth forward from them and Liligren from Toronto balances it out for them

I think it will be 1 of 6 teams. Could be a 3 team trade or 1 for 1 but imo he ends up in either St. Louis, Chicago, Utah, Seattle, Anaheim or NYI
It would surprise me if no one wanted Marner, he isn't worth the money and he will take the early trade because when his contract is over so is he ,so no choice but to except the early trade
I think Leafs fans are more interested in the Markstrom + Andersson deal than Flames fans.
Marner is a good player, but only has one year left on his deal. If he isn't interested in extending he is just a 1-year rental. But I don't think the Flames are at the right stage of their retool/build cycle to justify signing him long-term anyway. By the time CGY is competitive he will be over 30.
The only way I would do it is if Minten was included. If he was, I would do the deal and flip Marner to someone who had the desire and cap space to sign him long-term. But I don't think that list is a long one. I would also feel the need to sign (or trade for) a legit NHL goalie. Thereby incurring another headache.
If the Flames lose Markstrom they have Wolfe and Vladar (coming off of surgery) to take the reigns. I would hope CGY feels that Wolfe needs to be eased into the NHL and not thrown in with a 50% AHL defense and a backup goalie coming off surgery who has played 70 NHL games. Good way to screw up the development of a good young goalie if things go poorly. Good way to tank though. 😉

The Marner for Markstrom trade is laughable. Plus good luck having Marner agree to go there and resign. The most obvious trade partners to me are Seattle and Utah. Both are pretty much a star player away from being legit playoff teams and making a splash like adding Marner would be huge for those fanbases. They could care less about what he does at the playoffs at this point, and that exactly the type of market he needs to go too.
Toronto and Boston have been trading partners before, so my proposal is MARNER for LINUS ULLMARK & BRANDON CARLO. I think it helps both teams.
Marner and Tavares hold the ace, king, queen and jack cards and they will stick it to the Shanahan and the Leafs.
