McDavid was instigating after the buzzer, deserved what he got. But he got cross-checked from behind which started him down, so Soucy’s stick hit him in the face.
The refs finally realize they need to reign in the violence before it gets *too* ugly, and this is step 1. Doesn’t excuse not calling the bullshit up until now, but taken alone, this call seems totally reasonable.

This really surprises me. If it was intentional, then he deserved 20+ games and would have probably gotten 5. It’s clearly not intentional though. Zadorov knocked McDavid such that his head dropped to chest level, where Soucy was aiming.
Now, there’s a perfectly reasonable case to be made that you are responsible for your stick regardless of intention and shouldn’t be making big crosschecks to the chest after the final whistle regardless of reasoning, and I’m all for that.
However, that’s not really how DOPS has acted previously.

But can the NHL keep a serious face and say that Soucy deserves 1 game while Kane slew footing Quinn Hughes is totally fine? Hughes is the presumed Norris winner this year so not some scrub defenceman.

So this is a beautifully awkward situation that highlights what the NHL gets wrong time and time again: they judge the result and not the action.
Soucy attempted to cross check McDavid in the chest while Zadorov cross checked him in the back… the result of these two deliberate actions lead to McDavid being folded up and cross checked in the throat (which is simply not okay). Someone from the Canucks has to be suspended for this.
The more I think about it, and watch this replay, the more I think it’s actually Zadorov. Cross checking from behind is worse AND his actions are why Soucy ends up cross checking McDavid in the throat… therefore, IMO big Z should get the one gamer instead of Soucy.
But, if you judge the result, then it has to be Soucy who gets suspended (it was his stick that caught McDavid after all)… in the NHL’s defense, at least this is consistent with Trouba not getting suspended for targeting Necas’s head (with his left elbow) and missing.
At the end of the day, someone from the Canucks needed to be suspended… I just think they got the wrong guy here.
