  9. BigBuddha15

This pleases the Bolt, but I’m interested to see if they move someone or if somehow salary is being retained

  18. rhodesleadnowhere

This is excellent news! We are so fucking back. That said, I’m concerned about the cap.

  19. Affectionate-Joke617

We take McDonaugh, you can have jeannot back and we’ll toss in Sheary for free

  20. Chipsahoy523

WE’RE GETTING THE BAND BACK TOGETHER

  21. ViktorKreed

So assuming Stamkos comes back, maybe Cernak or Cirelli gets moved? Basing this only on their salaries and the fact that neither currently have a NTC at this time to my understanding. I believe Cernak’s kicks in in 2024.

  22. Sven9888

McDonagh was great for us and great for Nashville, and we needed help on defense badly, so in a sense, this is good news.

But I just don’t get it, for a lot of reasons. First of all, why are we trading futures for immediate help? McDonagh is very much immediate help—he’ll be 35 when next season starts, so even if he is good for the next couple of seasons until this contract ends, he certainly isn’t going to be a core piece for years to come. Maybe I’m just overly negative, but I certainly got the feeling that we were more than just one piece away from getting back to contention, and moving futures for very temporary help really only makes sense if you expect to contend right now. So I guess JBB disagrees and feels that this team can immediately contend?

Second of all, given that $6.75m of cap space is extremely valuable… what has changed since we traded McDonagh that makes us now willing to take that risk? The entire rationale of trading McDonagh over, say, Killorn, was that he was bound to regress at his age, so we should move the contract while it remains movable. We instead ended up buying him at an even higher price than we sold him. Why, a couple of years ago, did we think that we had to move the contract because he was likely a year or two from regression, but now that those couple of years have gone and he’s at the age where most players do start to fall a lot, we’re suddenly confident that he’ll remain an effective defenseman until he’s 37?

Third of all, where did this cap space come from? Is this a signal that someone like Cernak is likely on his way out, or is it… Stamkos? I suspect the former, but I’m a lot more nervous now than I was a few minutes ago.

  23. Spiffmania

So, aside from the fact that he is (hopefully still) exactly what the defense needs, I have to ask: Why did we let him go in the first place then? Seems a bit counterproductive in hindsight.

  24. USCTrojans780

Huge pleasant surprise. Welcome back McD!

  25. I’m really struggling to get excited about trading for a 34 y/o with a $6.75 hit for 2 years when we’re already so strapped for cash. Who’s out? Cirelli? Stamkos? Don’t love that. I love Mac but I’ll hold my judgement until the other shoe drops.

  26. Deadbolt2023

Other comments covering a lot of my initial thoughts..

Glad he is back, concerned about Cap implications – this isn’t over – some other things might have to happen now….

  27. Cakeygoodness666_

Im having a heart attack. I thought my mom in law was reading a rumor!! Im so happy!!!

  28. Allatura19

I hope it doesn’t mean the end of Stamkos in Tampa Bay. I’m surprised no salary retention was part of the deal.

  29. sunnydrivetime

Had to read this three times to be sure I wasn’t dreaming. No one has filled the hole he left and it will be so good to see him back where he belongs!

  30. Haveta believe that this is JBB making a statement about our « window »: With the « core 4 » still intact, Mac allows us to make one or two solid Cup runs. With a healthy Vasy and Serge, we can do serious damage next year with Mac back there. At this point, TBH, I wouldn’t care if they gave Stammer $4-$5mil for 8 with a guaranteed $30mil and just worry about it later with a buy-out during a down year a few years from now, after the current window is just about closed.

  31. Bigstakes7287

I love seeing Mac back but this doesn’t sound great for signing Stamkos. Someone is being shopped and there’s significant interest because mathematically we can’t roster a full team and no way JBB making this deal without already knowing his next steps. I can’t see Stamkos staying

  32. Tbloctothorpe88

Tampa Bay Lightning 2024-2025 Stanley Cup Champions. Etch it now.

  33. The-Machinist-

Is Breezy just reading reddit and taking our picks?

  34. Echo354

Obviously really shocked by this. I think it’s clear that the front office still thinks we’re contenders and it’s great to see that. If Vasy and Sergachev are healthy this keeps our window open for at least another year or two IMO.

  35. likeslululemon

I don’t see how Mac comes back and then push out Stamkos. No way Mac does this knowing it means his friend has to leave. Either Mac is taking a big discount or Stamkos is.

Someone tell me how to feel.

  36. Soup_Sensitive

Okay, normally I’m so against bringing people back, but mac is the exception

  37. tittytwonecklace

Mac said his first call after the trade was to stammer and stamkos was just getting off the ice from a workout with kuch. Read into that what u will but I take that as good news

  38. KingKasby

I swear JBB has an account herr and reads this subreddit.

    WE ARE SO BACK BABY
