This sort of feels like Marcus Hayes saying “I find Gritty embarrassing, I assume most hardcore fans feel the same as me so I should write a column about how we all feel this way.”
I actually think it’s impressive how much Gritty has proven *not* to be a fad. Everything about the rollout screamed “This will flame out in six months.” And my impression today is that Gritty is still generally liked in Philly, except by the people who hated him from Day 1, and he’s still a damn popular mascot league-wide and even beyond the sport. Calling him a fad has proven to be very inaccurate.
Gritty is an icon. Marcus Hayes can buzz off.
Ya just gotta accept that mascots are goofy and allow yourself to enjoy some fun silliness. Gritty remains the best mascot across all sports and everyone but anti-shenanigan curmudgeons love him
I literally have a standing appt with my artist to get a Gritty tattoo when the Flyers win the Cup. This dude can get fucked.
I still love Gritty, and I like that Gritty has life beyond just Flyers and hockey fans. I was in Japan a couple months ago wearing Gritty stuff and going through a busy station I heard someone go “It’s Gritty!” and it made my day.
Anecdotally, most of the hardcore fans I know personally are still big Gritty fans – these are also people I consider smart fans, not like Facebook commenters.
Though I do know there are some fans that hate him. I was at a season ticket holder even back in like 2018 or 2019 when there were a few season ticket holders who voiced how much they hated Gritty and how the Flyers should get rid of him. Realistically they would probably be that way with anything new, that’s just the way some people are.
I never liked Gritty. He’s a cartoon character. Just something to distract from the terrible hockey squad they have so people will be less likely to stop wasting their money supporting a failure of a NHL for 10+ years now.
I will not tolerate anti-gritty talk. We can meet in the parking lot later.

Why would anyone be embarrassed? Gritty is a recognizable piece of Philadelphia Flyer lore. One of my good friends, who is in *no* way a sports person, and certainly not a hockey guy is currently playing a Gritty themed D&D character. He 3D printed it and painted it…whole 9 yards. Not many sports teams can ascend past just « sports team » and the Flyers have managed to do that by creating a character like Gritty. That’s pretty cool.

I’m not gonna lie there was a time when I was tired of Gritty and a lot of that was because the team had no direction and it felt like the organization put more effort into everything Gritty than they did the hockey team.

Gritty is awesome.
Gritty is an embarrassment. He’s an embarrassment because he’s a symbol of the marketing focus comcast has with the flyers instead of devoting that towards a product on the ice. Things have moved positively since Danny B and Torts joined but it was an embarrassment prior.
Gritty has been a bigger pop culture success than anyone ever imagined and I would think he’s here for the long run. I mean he was going on Jimmy Fallon and major shows. The Flyers are going to monetize him as long as they can.
With that said, I do think the Gritty shock factor has kinda worn off a bit. I don’t think people get quite as excited as they once did.

The part about gritty that bothers me isnt gritty. It’s how it felt like they rolled him out as an apology for running the franchise into the ground. I am embarrassed but not by gritty. Gritty is awesome! Im embarrassed that we’ve sucked for so long and I put my heart and fucking soul into this team I didn’t want a mascot. I want play off wins, I want a cup!
