Unfortunately, it seems like the Wild, like the rest of the Minnesota teams, seem happy to just be competitive without ever actually going for it. It wears on a fan base and makes it hard to continue to root for teams that don't even seem like they care about winning a championship.
Billy is out of his league trying to run an NHL team. He should be running the kegs at a frat house.
I remember early on in his tenure, he verbally placed emphasis on developing 4th line players and 3rd pairing D. That in my mind, has not panned out to this point. Hearing BG is open to trading our first high end skilled center developed internally in decades is a huge downer. John Hines feels like a legacy hire, which I know the foundation of hockey is built on, it's just so boring and mediocre. Feels right on par with all the 4×4.5M deals. I'm tired of watching 4th line players signed outside the organization playing all the way up through the 2nd line.
Totally agree about the survey that this is how folks observing the process feel/ think etc. Personally I’m still banking on BG wanting to win big. I don’t think he’s in it to just cash a check or appease an owner. I give them a B+. If by 2026 they’re getting bounced in the first round forget about a C- I’m flunking them.
For me, it's the Kaprizov clock ticking that makes me the most nervous
I think confidence really started to turn with the Stramel pick in the 2023 draft, since the prospects are the only area of excitement on the team right now with the team cap-strapped. The extensions for Hartman and Zuccarrello I think everyone could stomach. Add in the over-the-top deals for Gaudreau and Foligno that no one else would've offered and the poor seasons from pretty much all of them and its snowballed. If the Wild are competing for the wildcard (which they should), three of Foligno, Gaudreau, Hartman, Middleton, and Zuccarrello have bounce back seasons (which they should), and two or three of O'Rourke, Hunt, Novak, Lambos, Peart, Bankier, Masters, Haight, Milne, and Spacek take legitimate steps and look like they have careers as NHLers (which should happen in Iowa this year), I think people will move on.
It's the contract extension to bottom 6 guys. And keeping mojo on the roster and hiring of John hynes is what did it for me
