So far so good for Grier. Building a solid group of forwards . It can be a slow slog. The Sharks were a mess.

The Askerov trade is about options.

San Jose has Vanacek and Blackwood as UFAs after this season. They are a tandem of backup placeholders. If either of The Sharks' starting tandem falters, Askarov gets playing time in San Jose next season.

Soros has signed an 8 year extension in Nashville, so Askarov was blocked. All things willing, he is the starter after next season.

  3. 2 years ago in 2022 the Sharks had an old aging past their primes expensive roster who were nowhere close to being contenders anymore that I think top GM candidates honestly shied away from this job knowing what a terrible situation the franchise was in going forward.

Now imo the Sharks have one of the top 2 or 3 prospects pools with Celebrini, Smith, Dickinson, Musty, Bystedt, Mukhamadullin, Chernyshov and now add Askarov who is one of if not still the top goalie prospects to this list of top level young talent.

This doesn't even include Eklund who had a good first full season in the pros in 2023/24 in San Jose last season.

Add another high end prospect with probably a top 5 pick in the 2025 draft and hopefully they can sign a handful of quality free agent veterans to help teach this young core to be winners in the next couple of offseasons & the Sharks have one of the brightest futures for any franchise in the NHL.

  4. Reminds of the Kiprusoff situation. Only this time we are not the team giving up an elite-level goalie, we are the ones getting him! Nice trade Grier!

  5. Preds fan here. Really happy for Askarov to see him go to the Sharks. A team where he will definitely have a route to being the primary starter unlike Nashville where Saros has him roadblocked with his new long-term contract extension. A highly touted goalie prospect like Askarov deserves to be on a team where he has the opportunity. Seems like it was a fair trade as well!

  6. I can’t wait to watch the sharks this year, First time i felt like that in a while

  7. Pred here.
Can the Sharks leadership handle a highly emotional Binnington/Hextall type of goalie
that atm appear immature as well?
Barry clearly could not, and this last untimely cry clearly pissed him off. Barry likes his quiet finns that keep their chin down and act like team players.
What this dude not mentions is that Asky choked in both playoffs for the Admirals and in both cases lost his nr 1 spot. He was a clear contributor
why Admirals didnt make deeper runs, clearly dissapointing. Might also been to Barry’s dislike
and the reason why Wedge was brought over from Dallas. Barry apparently ranked Asky as low as nr 4, because Lankinen was the preferred nr 2 but he turned out a bit too expensive(still UFA)
So while the rest of the league was very hyped on Asky, Barry in win now mode clearly evaluated him ‘not nhl ready’.
Lets see how this pans out for him in Sharks

  8. San Jose has a super bright future! Will be really fun to watch this team grow together.

  9. I think you nailed it, Brodie. Maybe not immediately, but there is a lot of reason for optimism for the future of the Sharks. Granted, there's a ton of potential and a lot of ducks have to line up. But for the first time in a long time, San Jose has so much young depth they can afford to miss a little. Being able to throw everything at the wall and seeing what sticks is a great problem to have, and something San Jose hasn't been able to do for quite some time now. Color me optimistic.

  10. we have to look at:
    1) Goalies take awhile to mature; we got that in 2020 11th overall pick, thank you preds. think of it as the sharks using their 1st this year on a goalie and fast forwarding his training.
    2) Askarov got to work with Mitch Korn, Premiere NHL Goalie coach, something the Sharks havent had since Strelow
    3) the sharks already has a Edstrom in Bystead, and plenty of Chronas.

  11. Great breakdown, Brodie. I believe Askarov won't have a problem shuttling back and forth between the Barracuda and Sharks. San Jose's two other goalies are UFA's next season, so Askarov can step in and be #1. That is a better scenario, than having zero chance for 9 seasons, behind Saros. This one and the next 8 of his extension.
The Sharks won this trade long term. Saros' 8 year extension starts in his age 30 season, and runs through age 37. Likely a contract, where the back end, years 6 through 8, will be downhill. The Sharks have put themselves 2/3 years ahead, faster,by acquiring Askatov. In 3 seasons, with the new talent, the turnaround will be moving up into playoff contention.

  12. I wanted us to draft him or trade for him in that draft; I’m beyond hyped and so stoked for this upcoming season! I’m also excited for you to have something happy to look forward to after this As season.

  13. Can someone win GM of the year before the season starts because GM Mike Grier would be the winner

  14. Sharks got a good one. I live in Milwaukee and watched Asky the last 2 seasons. He’s had his playoff struggles, but he is a stud and definitely should be the goalie of the future for you guys.. Personally I would’ve kept him and traded Saros and I love Saros 😂

  15. This is a great move. I think the goal for next year is to have the young studs show they belong and be exciting enough that free agent Dmen will want to sign here lol

  16. Good analysis Brodie, but with prospects it is so hard to verify their real value and who won the trade in the long run. Sharks never tried out Edstrom, so we really don't know his value as NHL player. It is good for all Sharks to remember that prospects in age range from 18 to 23 (first 5 years) are learning to win and lose like pros, and fans can expect too much from such young players. NHL players appear to peak mostly in the 22-32 age range, and only the best players are better earlier or later. Mike Grier has earned the patience of fans with his moves in last year, and with half of the NHL roster new faces, we hope that they find chemistry and build team back into a playoff contender. With goalies, I think NHL teams need 2 great goalies and luck in avoiding goalie injuries also. Sharks have really turned their hard luck story around after tank season last year and maybe more fans will buy tickets to home games to see these new faces test their skills against other teams who also got better in the mean time. With so many new faces, training camp will be more interesting and the big topic will be who plays on what lines and the new power play possibilities. One of the young Sharks should win the Calder trophy for rookie of the year, but will it be Celebrini, Smith, Askarov, or some unknown other?

  17. Habs are also young team building right way. But remember, NJ, Detroit, Ottawa have had young and exciting teams for the last few years, and Buffalo has tried to do this now for 12+ years.
