Couple months ago I got absolutley torched and downvoted for suggesting this exact thing.
It’s Hedman’s team. Any other choice is kinda ridiculous
Hmm… interesting thought tbh but could & should are two different things to be considered here. Could he be captain if not Hedman? Sure, he was Rangers’ captain before coming to Tampa & I’m sure that demands a lot more from an individual due to media market difference etc so I’m sure he could handle it very well.
However, if Hedman doesn’t want it right now which very well may be the case, I would like to see the team run w/ 3 alternates instead & not name a captain. Losing Stamkos hurts esp for some in this group who basically grew up under the Stamkos-Hedman tutelage like they did under Marty-Vinny-old guard before them.
The hole that Stamkos’ absence leaves behind isn’t something that should be filled in overnight & while I think McDonagh would likely do a great job as captain again, I don’t think he should be named captain at least right now. Great leader but the timing would just be very odd as his re-acquisition is likely the biggest reason in regards to salary cap & not enough money to go around to fit everyone in plus when reacquired, he sounded very excited to play w/ Stamkos again so it feels like everyone fell in line under Stamkos’ leadership & I don’t know if you should just put the C on another jersey so quickly. You don’t have to & in this case, I don’t think they should as there doesn’t seem to be a clear-cut heir to the C like there was when Marty left in the ugly fashion that he did where quickly naming a new captain made sense then
Three alternates of Hedman-McDonagh-Point-Paul & having that 3rd A rotate is something I could see & would like to see them explore that first before naming a new captain
As soon as we traded for Mac, I told a co-worker that we just got our replacement for Stamkos. Mac is a leader and would be a fitting of wearing the C if Heddy doesn’t want it. As far as I’m concerned, Heddy should have first offering to it but if he passes, then Mac would be great in the role.
Giving the C to a guy who hasn’t played here in years is dumb as fuck. Hedman is the captain and anything else is ridiculous.
