McGroarty got sent down because he's waivers exempt. He was doing well, on the third line with Puljujarvi and Eller, but once Rust came off IR, they had to make a move, and Rutger was the only one who wouldn't have to clear waivers.
They'll have similar issues when Blake Lizotte comes back from IR. Defenseman Jack St. Ivany is the only one on the NHL roster who is waivers exempt.
