Good luck to Hunt. Log jam in Minnesota at D and I can understand him wanting to go somewhere else. I don't know enough about Jiricek to further evaluate.
From what I read the 1st round pick is only top 5 protected, the 3rd round pick in 2026 was originally Colorado's and the 4th rounder in 2026 was Toronto's. Win for both teams since the Jackets can use the picks as trade bait to buy, package them to move up, or just draft guys that can help. Minnesota benefits by taking a chance on a young RHD.
Tough year for Dmen in that draft year. Nemec went 2nd overall and is currently getting pushed around in the AHL too
Holy crap, the first 4 picks in one year for ONE player basically. As we've seen already, just by being a top-10 draft pick doesn't necessarily mean they'll pan out to be a great player, just look at Erik Gudbranson and Olli Juolevi…
While I do think both teams benefited from this, Columbus' lack of foresight in developing Jiricek on the main roster is baffling. Hunt is a skating defenseman and Waddell likes that. But Jiricek has Victor Hedman level upside.
I am a Wild fan, so it'll be awesome to see him flourish in Minnesota
Curious where you'll power rank the Avs tomorrow. As an Avs fan, #15 would be generous.
4 picks is a LOT for an unproven guy
The problem with Jiricek is he didn’t want to develop. He doesn’t want to be in the ahl and I wouldn’t be surprised if he forced this by requesting a trade when he was sent down last week. Maybe he’ll be more receptive in Minnesota, he’s got the potential if he works on his skating and defense
Think there was only one team in on Jiricek. No other team would be anywhere close.
Wild know how to develop young talent these days. It took Rossi years to finally make an impact in the NHL and he’s doing great now. Not every player is Brock Faber who can go from the NCAA straight into the NHL playoffs.
Thats a lot of picks
Draft Picks will likely be paired with Future Considerations.
Good for Jiricek. Jackets' history of developing talents has been awful.
This trade makes sense for Columbus only if there's something we don't know.
As a Jackets fan, I think this is a solid, even trade.
David wasn't ready for the big league. but he insists he is. with his play he doesn't look ready. you can't take better players out of the line up just to develop players in the big league
Jiricek is free!
Oh god finally he got away from CBJ.. I was bummed when they drafted him.. Minnesota looking good so far❤
Seems very risky for the Wild to give up that many picks, including a first round. If Jiricek doesn't improve, it will almost be as bad as that trade Tampa did the other year.
Love the trade, the price is too heavy
The guy can’t skate backwards and couldn’t crack the Columbus rotation. It’s was an over pay for a tall prospect at least 2 years away from playing at the top level.
I don't watch the Bluejackets much but have no idea if they are tanking or trying to compete. They constantly are using their first rounders as teenagers yet they also made the big Johnny Gaudreau signing and signed Babcock. Thankfully these young players didnt have to be coached by him but that organization seems to be a mess.
Jiricek is a slow skater whom we found out was badly overrated and refused to listen when aspects of his game that were lacking were pointed out to him. He became uncoachable. If it had been just one administration in Columbus that had issues with him, you could give him the benefit of the doubt, but this was two adminstrations in Columbus that could not get through to Jiricek. Unless Columbus cashes in on the draft picks, this trade could be much ado about nothing.
For a sec, I thought it said Hunt was 5-foot-1
Can you give us some inspiring words about how a team like the Sens can fix their problem? Another crap November. I’m finding it really hard to cheer for this team anymore.
I don't understand all the hate towards this trade. The Wild gave up a LATE first round pick, along with 2 other useless ones for a potential stud D-man. I see it as a quality gamble. How often does a late first rounder ever pan out? Not very. Who cares if it's top 5 protected. Do ya'll really believe the Wild are going to lose every game the rest of this season to move into the top 10? Man, I need what you're smoking. Also, Hunt is dogwater. Always has been, and always will be.
I think this trade will look really good in retrospect for the Wild.
Problem isnt giving time to Jiricek to develop, but he has been acting as if something is owed to him , hence playing time and where he's playing .
Faber, Brodin, Spurgeon… and even Middleton putting up points this season. And now adding Buium and Jiricek to the lineup too? Minnesota's blue line is stacked
CBJ fan here. I’m glad to be rid of the Jiricek drama. I think he’ll eventually turn into a great D man but all this reporting about how he thinks he deserves more that he’s getting tells of a locker room cancer. 3 different coaches have stapled him to the bench or the press box and 2 different GMs have sent him down to the minors. Take the hint kid! You aren’t that good yet! Seriously, he’s a liability in his own zone and makes more bad plays than good ones. Go play in the minors for at least another year and figure it out.
Columbus got a haul but minny wins this trade
On a second.note that cannon jersey is so cool
It seems like Minnesota gave up a lot but I have faith in Billy G, he's done wonders with this team. His comments about this trade and not trying to "win big with every trade" is spot on. Go Wild!
I have a suggestion for trade videos. If you feel that both teams did well, as in this trade, how about wearing the sweater of the team that comes out the better of the two and the hat of the other team? As always, great videos.
So excited for this. Hopefully Columbus can get some value with Hunt who's looking to be a bottom 4 Dman and the 1st rounder.
I'm looking forward to a Minnesota-San Jose WCF in the coming years. That's gonna be absolute cinema.
Begining stages thats absolutly trash still. Lord mn aint got nothing we wont make it this year
The best team in the NHL wins again. Jiricek is going to be a Star. Not good for my Jets, but no surprise that Chevy wouldn't go in on a very talented future Star and the Wild would. Congrats to the Wild and their fans. argh.
To me, it's a huge red flag on Jiricek to see Denton Mateychuk (CBJ's other defenseman from 2022) currently leading all AHL dmen in scoring.
Players develop differently, they had different areas to work on as prospects, etc etc. But it shouldn't just be a blanket "Columbus can't develop talent, the Wild will fix him" response here imo. Interested to watch his career develop from here
I think Minnesota will turn him around. But they paid HEAVILY for him. That’s a lot of draft capital
CBJ needed to move him. Hope he does better in Minny.
Monsters season ticket holder here. Last year Jiricek was complaining about playing in the AHL, but my opinion was that he wasn't even the best defenseman on our team. Jiricek shows up on the scoresheet often, but he is just a liability defensively. He'll often get burnt, or just lacks hustle to pucks that others would get to first.
On its face, Columbus took in a haul for an unproven prospect. Minnesota rolled the dice that this kid will be a future top-4 D-man for years to come. Time will only tell.
"as long as he's willing…" sounds like he was NOT willing to put in the work in AHL and couldn't naturally crack the lineup in Columbus. Sadly may be wasted talent regardless of whether hes in MIN or CBJ. Glad CBJ cut their losses though if he's not going to respect the timeline he needs to succeed long term.
The Wild gave up a 20's 1st round pick in a very weak draft class year (outside the top 6 or so) a 2nd round pick that won't be NHL ready for at least 6+ years and a few late round picks they got trading role players last trade deadline… for that they get a 6'4" RH Defenseman with a bomb for a shot who will play with other elite LH Defenseman like Faber or Brodin…oh and then they have Zeev Buium coming at the end of the season…name a better top 6 D in the league (Spurgeon, Brodin, Middleton, Faber, Buium, Jiricek)
As a sharks fan, I’m bummed out. But Good move for the wild and Columbus.
I think this is a possible win win trade for both teams. Gasp, I know. Are those allowed anymore? He was on the outs for various reasons with CBJ. No aspersions cast here. I am sure this is assuredly partially on the player and his sword wielding agent. CBJ's new management gets an NHL ready D man plus four goodish picks. Sota gets a guy that fills a crying need. RHD with size. He has defensive and skating issues, I get that. But the rest of the D core are defensive dnyamos including Spurgeon, Faber, Brodin and Middleton. One guy who can pinch while his bros cover for him ala prime Dumba is not a bad thing.
The big mistake was for Jiricek to have gone to the AHL after being drafted rather than to the CHL. His skating just isn't up to NHL standards and as a draft pick, it was fixable but now he thinks he should be playing in the NHL and offensively perhaps he is capable of that, but there's times that he can get beaten so easily because he just isn't mobile enough. If he's going to be in Iowa trying to fix his skating, then it's the same situation as being stuck in Cleveland. There's a major difference in salary between the AHL and NHL and perhaps that's the issue. But if he's worried about that and doesn't make the NHL fast enough with the Wild, then he could be rather discontent there.
