As a devils fan, I'm a little biased. But I'll break this down a bit.
Their offense is incredibly underrated. Hall, Hischier, Palms, Gusev, Simmonds, Bratt (I think will have a huge year), Hughes, Coleman, Zajac, Wood, Boqvist (who you guys didn't even mention but I forgive you ;)) are all guys that can score 15-30 goals. I think this team will score tons and the depth will chip in as well.
I like the defensive core and I don't think we'll see a lot of Andy Greene. The guys we'll see are Vatanen, Subban, Smith, Butcher, Severson and I imagine Carrick or Mueller. That's actually a fairly solid core with Severson doing so well at the Worlds hopefully he can maintain that.
Goaltending is iffy but I do think if Devils go 50/50 with Schneids and Blackwood we'll see a solid 1, 2 punch. I think Schneider is back (maybe not his old self but still very good) and Blackwood will have a lot of pressure taken off him that he faced last season.
We also have to remember that Devils played most of last season with an AHL roster and still managed to squeak out a few wins down the stretch. I think this team has come together very nicely and with a healthy Taylor Hall and a Cory Schneider who is back looking to prove himself again plus all the other acquisitions, this team will be a playoff team for sure.
I have the Devils going to the Eastern Conference Finals, since the Metro is weaker now.

Goal tending is the biggest x factor for them making the playoffs. They will be in the race till the end this season

I like your pre-season previews but there is way too much time spent just debating between you two without a meaningful structure to your insight and not enough off-season training footage or last seson highlight reel stuff. Cameras should be out and about trying to capture what these athletes are doing in their off-season to inspire kids.
I like the look of those 1st and 2nd lines. As long as Subban doesn't hotdog his way to nowhere the team should be much strongr this season.

The devil's defense is so underrated. They have one of if not the best right side in the league with Subban, Vatanen and Severson. When one of Severson or Vatanen is on your third pair that says something. All three are capable of putting up 40 plus points and playing adequate defense. Severson is getting better defensively every year. As for the left side Andy Greene is still a solid defensive defensman. Will Butcher will only get better and he's already a capable defensman. The wildcard is Ty Smith, the kid was already NHL ready last season, but Shero was smart to send him back to juniors. Where he was the best defensman in all junior hockey. He could easily be the best rookie on a team that will also have Hughes, Gusev and potentially Boqvist as rookies as well. Smith is the real deal. Best defense prospect the organization has had since Scott Niedermayer and that says a lot when you consider how many defensman this organization has produced in the last 30 years. The devil's will be a playoff team for sure if everyone stays healthy.

Im a die hard Flyers fan. and tbh Wayne Simmonds WAS great, but last year and the year before he showed he's declined fast. He looked no better than a 4th line winger. Hes a great team player, and great on the PP. But 5 on 5 he is putrid. Not what he once was. PK subban is an awesome D man as well, but i wonder why 2 Teams have now given up on him? as for Gusev, i think he will be great, but again he seems to be a locker room cancer. Maybe im wrong. But i think the Devils off season was over rated.
I also think Subbans cap hit will effect them re signing hall.

No love for a franchise thats been top 3 franchise in last 20 years 4 cup finals and still no respect they will make playoffs if they make one or two more good moves its a finals team
No problem if they fail, Bettman will make sure that NJ gets another high pick for his friend who he already helped out twice in the past.
I was sure that last year we would be contenders but then every one got injured, along with a parade of costly referee non calls and calls against.
Bit now I'm excited again. Live this team no matter what. Go Devils!

Answering the big question: as much as I love what the Devils did this offseason, the current tandem may not be enough. Schneider has not been the same since his hip surgery, and Blackwood is still very young (age 22 is young for a goaltender). You can also "thank" Bergevin for poisoning the goalie well, cause any attempt to trade or sign a starter is going to cost the Devils. One team I see with surplus goalies is the Penguins, but my advice is to choose carefully: Jarry or DeSmith. Right now, they also face cap crunch, so the Devils have a better leverage to acquire one of those guys. I'm not saying the Devils must pull the trigger, but it does make sense. Pens have surplus goods and need to shed salary, the Devils need an "insurance" of a goaltender and have cap room to take one contract. I think it can work.
The Devils got PK Subban and Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson, a 2nd, and a 3rd round pick. Ridiculous.
