Let me know your thoughts on this trade
good riddance. Most of his salary is gone, and his defense CERTAINLY has been gone. It gives Hawks young guys a chance to play and get experience.
Wowsa!! Seth Jones going to Florida makes their chances of defending the Stanley Cup much better IMHO. Spencer Knight is a good return piece. Breaking news for sure.
I love this trade for Chicago. I liked what I saw outside the nhl if he develops well this is a steal
As a Hawks fan I'm elated with this trade! Jones hasn't been giving 100% and this gives the team some salary relief to sign some help for Bedard. The Hawks are loaded with talented young defensemen who haven't been given the opportunity they deserve because of the presence of Jones and TJ Brodie. Also Mrazek has been playing horribly lately, so don't be surprised to see him moved.
Jones isn't worth no 9.5, but 7 million with the cap going up is starting to look ok. This guy could be the piece that gets them the cup and they gave up a 1st which should hold about as little value as a 1st could and a guy who was so mentally ill with ocd, he couldn't backup his team on a cup run, and who is making 4.5. Jones is a better player than Montour. Don't be surprised when the Panthers have another cup parade in a few months.
It does make me wonder what Florida does for a backup? They’ve gone from Stolarz to Knight to ???
Now thw Panthers need a backup goalie
Wonder if we see a Chris Driedger sighting?
I think Zito made a huge mistake, Spencer Knight is going to take over Chi-Town Baby!!!!
For Chicago I wonder how much longer Mrázek and/or Söderblom are in the system. I suspect Brossoit (always injured) is as good as gone, what with Commesso and Gaian in the system.
Let's go thank u Florida… Chicago has a real gaolie now hes young but good grate trade 😊
Great, now the Hawks have 4 goalies worth $16 million annually! And for what???
The GM is out of his mind…this isn’t EA Sports NHL 2025!!! Ugh, there is no plan in Chicago.
Great move by both teams
So who’s the odd man out on FLA blue line? Another trade coming??
Maybe Ekblad will get moved.
Ekblad will take less on his next deal, which makes room for a Bennet raise to like 6.5. Also, next year is Bob’s last, so they will get that back in terms of cap space. Question is, who is the goalie of the future in Florida? I think it will be Saros or Gibson.
Jones been overrated, overpaid his whole career, maybe going to Florida playing under Paul Maurice and being around real pros like Reinhart , Bennett, Tkachuk will give him no other choice but to elevate his game.
They should have buried Jones on a losing team. A player shouldn't be able to whine and complain then be traded to one of the favorite teams in the league to win the Stanley Cup. In the offseason, trade Jones and sign Sam Bennett!
So long Jones good riddance!
He has been on the downward slide since last year. Jones is not worth 9.5 million a year and never was since joining the Hawks.
Chicago won this trade by a big margin.
Never mind Bennett Mike, how does this trade affect Ekblad? He's as good as gone as a free agent. Straight up, i think i would take Ekblad over Jones, but the Panthers must feel that Aaron is damaged goods, as his numbers keep going down. The Cats still need to make a move now to acquire a backup goalie. I don't think Driedger is up to it.
Hawks made the best out of a bad situation.
Seth Jones is a high-level NHL defenseman who has had a solid career, though opinions on his overall impact vary. Here’s a breakdown of his career strengths and weaknesses to help rate him on a 1-10 scale:
Strengths:
• Two-way defenseman – Jones contributes at both ends of the ice, logging heavy minutes in all situations.
• Elite skating & size – At 6’4”, 210+ lbs, he combines size with strong skating ability, making him effective in transition and defensive play.
• Offensive contributions – He has had multiple seasons with 40+ points, peaking at 57 points in 2017-18 with Columbus.
• Workhorse minutes – Often among the league leaders in time on ice (TOI), averaging over 24-25 minutes per game.
• All-situations player – Plays on both the power play and penalty kill.
Weaknesses:
• Defensive inconsistencies – While he has strong tools, his defensive zone play and decision-making have been questioned at times.
• Advanced stats debate – Analytics often suggest he’s not as effective as his reputation or contract would imply.
• Team success – He hasn’t had deep playoff success, which can impact his legacy.
Overall Rating:
• Peak years in Columbus (2017-2019) – 8/10 (borderline elite)
• Recent years with Chicago (post-2021) – 6.5-7/10 (still a strong player, but his impact has been less dominant)
• Career average – 7.5/10 (a top-pairing defenseman but not quite in the elite tier of Norris Trophy contenders like Cale Makar or Victor Hedman)
While Jones has had a strong career and remains a valuable defenseman, his contract ($9.5M AAV until 2030) has drawn criticism, as some feel he hasn’t consistently played at a level that justifies it. He’s still a high-end NHL defenseman, just not quite in the superstar category.
He's probably worth it to defending Stanly Cup Camps – Florida Panthers – who will likely repeat.
How foes Florida afford him?
