There is no way the Leafs can win a cup this year, with the players that are left oin the potential trade pool, and with the cap space that is left.
If the top players were not so greedy, and accepted lower salaries, that could have been cap space to make moves, but not now, with the top 5 players making at least half the cap.
Leafs have to stand pat, imho. Tampa paid too much, Florida has the cap space, and Toronto shouldn't trade away their future. They got scooped this year because they were being prudent. This may end up paying dividends.
Not sure how that's Matthews calling out the front office; sounds more like he's supporting them. Everyone would love to see McDavid and MacKinnon put on the roster but highly unlikely, so why overpay for 3rd and 4th liners? The stupid salary cap forces teams to build through the draft; it's no longer a quick fix system. I like the way Berune has built the team up, focusing on defence first. I'm cautiously optimistic, especially with Stolarz.
Matthews has never been one to bash the team or management; that's the smart approach. They shouldn't sell the farm for one run. That's been tried repeatedly in the past and has never worked.
