I agree . the leafs can be screwed by this. they'll have 11 million to play with next year . but having Mitch walk without getting anything would be a failure.

He's right, they may have damaged their chances of bringing him back and you're not going to find another player available at his level in free agency, someone who can score, play PP, kill penalties, play 22 minutes a night. Thinking you can replace him with a couple of guys who make 5ish million won't come close to replacing what he gives you. What was it, $9M combined the off-season before for Tyler Bertuzzi & Max Domi? That makes for a better lineup?

Button is definitely paid by the marner camp to prop him up. He says he was a seleke finalist but that was half a decade ago and it was a joke, 16 ranked as low as 70th innthe league a few defensive categories that year. It’s a business at the end of the day and when you have an opportunity to sign a similar player who in my opinion is a better player and definitely a better playoff performer you gotta go for it. Mitch is gonna get paid we all know that but his playoff record is is biggest blemish. You can’t blame them for trying to upgrade

McDavid extension and marner coming to Edmonton. I could see both McDavid and marner taking slight “pay cuts” to play in Edmonton especially since McDavid and marner are already buddies and which team is closer to a cup? Edmonton is the obvious choice plus marner wouldn’t have to deal with Toronto media which is horrible.
Mitch's performance in the 4 Nations Cup raised his value and proved he is a big game player when surrounded by other elite talent

It’s not confusing, as a gm you have to explore every opportunity when you have a player who refuses to sign. Leafs signed Willy no problem so what’s marners problem

If I was Marner, I would just go to Edmonton after his chemistry with McDavid was on full display.

It's not weird. He will not allow any sort of contract negotiation. They obviously knew Rantanen would be interested in signing with the Leafs. He's a better player.
Edit- how soft is Marner if this effects his contract going forward
