Why do most athletes come out in such a public way? Plain and simple. To prevent someone else from outing you. It's hard for most people with public careers to walk into an LGBT establishment and/or event without someone trying to expose you. This guy clearly wanted to have a legitimate relationship without being someone's 'beard.' He didn't want to jeopardize his athletic career over stupid nonsense caused by someone else's insecurity. He got support from the NHL so he could come out without it being a scandal.

Absolutely total respect 4 this man And I bet he didn't realise or even begin to think how much support he gotans is gonna get,good on ya mate.i used to play hockey semi pro in England and I remember 1 of our team mates came out but we all ready new or had a good idea he was a great fella and hard as nails.a defenseman he could fight for fun but off the ice wot a lovely guy. I remember we planned this when he came in the locker room last we all started singing George Michael I'm your man at the top of our voices you had to be there but very funny even joe that's him was laughing he took it well and that was it his fella used to come to the game's another nice guy he didn't expect the support he got but I dont know why he was our friend and team mate woteva his sexual orientation who cares.i wish this man all the best in life brave boy any idiots are not worth worrying about nuff respect from London England 👍🏴
