  1. Sens beating the Oilers in a 7 game series as if! Only if there is major injuries to most of the Oilers would Sens stand a chance.

  2. You have a great hockey channel, but math might not be your thing, two teams being 20 teams below the bottom team of the east… 40 total points spread elsewhere is a big deal.

  3. i miss 1v8 set up. yes im only saying it because its gonna be year-fucking-four of seeing the oilers in the first round. its so boring

  4. The real problem with the conferences right now is that Dallas could be the #2 team in the NHL, but have to face a team they would never face in any other sport's more sensible playoff format.

  5. People are downplaying the oilers. Im hoping that will make them slide under the radar into the playoffs. Then we pounce and beat everyone, who would not be expecting us to be "playing well"… But maybe im stupid.

  6. I don't like these comparisons based on the record. Because, CHI&SJS are clearly rebuilding and barely have 20wins… While East doesn't have clearly rebuilding team… Boston was in the race for PO and PHI has enough talent to win certain number of games… Moreover, East gets these botom teams on their road trips, quite often back-to-back… Top teams are matched in terms of strenght… The truth is there are not easy games in the East (especially after Columbus stepped up and Buffalo is doing Buffalo things :D) Teams might not have the best records, but playing PIT isn't the same as playing SEA… or PHI/BOS compared to SEA /ANA might have similiar record, but very type different players… Overall, the parity is great and EAST and WEST are pretty much the same in terms of strenght… 🙂

  7. As an original fan of football (soccer) and as long as I’ve been a fan of American sports, the playoff eligibility system I still find unusual and senseless not to mention the boring redundancy of playoff match ups from one end to the other. I wish the bracket system was scratched and remade. How can you be ok with all this?

  8. Not a Habs fan, however, in that possible match up against the Blues? Montreal would bounce them if it happened tomorrow.

  9. Macklin Celebrini has very interesting East vs West splits.

    West:
    34 games, 17 goals, 25 assists, 42 points, -2 +/- rating.
    East:
    32 games, 7 goals, 13 assists, 20 points, -24 +/- rating.

At least from Macklin Celebrini's perspective, the Eastern Conference is much much tougher to face than the Western Conference.

  10. Asking an east-coaster their opinion is like asking a Maple Leafs fan whom they'd like to see traded to their team-and they pick all the best players from throughout the league-caring nothing for any other teams. So just look at the points achieved.! Not one single eastern team matches the Western Conference teams. It will be entertaining to see the Cup come back to the Western Conference!!! Thanks Shannon.

  11. There's a strong case to say 6 of the best 8 teams are from the West. Carolina is arguably worse today than exactly one year ago, they lost in LA 7-2, gave up several quick goals to Colorado, lost at home to Edmonton, can't beat Winnipeg but look fantastic vs Vegas.
Florida is not healthy but when Ekblad returns for Game 3, will they actually advance past Tampa Bay? No, I don't see it.
Tampa Bay and Washington apart of the top 8 with Toronto at 9th, Florida 10, Carolina 11, St.Louis 12, Montreal 13. Minnesota and New Jersey are both big underdogs to make it beyond round one. Ottawa has ullmark in net who could spoil Toronto's minor ECF chances, let alone a round two encounter with TB or FLA.

  12. The central clears everyone else, and by default that makes the west tougher. All you need to look at is the records of the other divisions vs the central. Even with Chicago and Nashville in the central every team in the league, minus Vegas, has a losing record against the central. So the play on the ice settles this one easily

  13. The bottom 5 is not entirely balanced……….. because 5 is an odd number and it would never be even, lol. I got you there Hockey Guy. In fact 3 from one and 2 from the other is as balanced a bottom 5 can be, as opposed to 4 to 1 or 5 to 0.

  14. For what it's worth, (as of 04/11/25) if you take the bottom 8 teams by p% it is an even 4 and 4 split between conferences and even works out to be 2 teams from each division.
So, bottom teams are pretty equitable.

looking at the top 8 there are 5 from the West and three from the East with only one team from the Atlantic, three from the Central and two each from the Metro and Pacific.
So, looking at top teams the Central seems the strongest division and the Atlantic the weakest.

Despite commonly held beliefs (which probably stem from how expansion occurred in the late 60s and 70s), the West actually appears to be the stronger conference these days; but parity is actually pretty close to balanced

  15. Just for fun, if the playoffs started today and it was a straight 1-16 (by P%0 the matchups would be:
    Jets v Flames
    Caps v Devils
    Stars v Sens
    Knights v Blues
    Leafs v Wild
    Kings v Panthers
    Avs v Oilers
    Canes v Lightning

  16. We clearly have a decent level of parity. It is not perfect but there is a big difference in how teams are managed. People arguing against this are delusional.

One extra point is that things might change with the salary cap going up and maybe some teams not able to afford it. We will see how they react and if it swings hard one way or another.

  17. Uhhh if you're picking 5 teams and the breakdown east/west is 3/2, that is as balanced as it could be. 🤔
You should've hit bottom 6 if you wanted to compare.

  18. Your video has a large flaw in that west plays the west bottom more. Just look at game totals 14 games vs 12 that’s 2 bonus games therefore 4 extra points available not to even factor that you played the bottom 3 teams in NHL overall more too

  19. I personally do not like Boston… But crazy to see they're in the bottom 5. Never thought I'd see the day

  20. St Louis is still without Holloway and Parayko, I feel they were the difference makers in the last 2 losses

  21. One salient point missed is that since 3 of the 5 lowest teams are in the west, the west playoff teams play more games against these 5 than the east do. So comparing percentages is really not a meaningful exercise. Additionally even though you did not include them, the 6th lowest ranked team in the NHL (Seattle) is also in the west. So compare the total points earned against the 5 (or 6) worst teams, and you will find that the west had a fairly substantial advantage.

  22. Can we get a video on how many times the central has had 5 teams in the playoffs. Feels like most years, that's been the case. Don't think Pacific has ever had 5 in. Could do the same for the East

  23. You are heading in the right direction, but many people look at points and wins (which the central is dominant) as the central had the best teams.

The western conference also has more of the worst teams with 4th worst in the central nearly even with the worst team in the east, and the wost team in the west being MUCH worse than the worst team in the east.

While the win% on the worst teams in each of the conference is similar between the east and west best teams, it doesn't change the total number of games that each conference plays against the bottom teams. Simply, the west plays more games against worst teams than the east does, and it doesn't have to be dramatic, but 4 points is enough to sway the president's trophy.

All that said, it really doesn't change the wild dynamics of NHL hockey, as a great team may dominate a team lower on the standings, while that same team low on the standing may dominate a different team high in the standings. Carolina last year was probably the one team who could give the panthers some challenge, but they couldn't get through the Rangers, while the Rangers could take on carolina but fared much worse against the panthers than carolina could have. It's a weird dynamic, and you just hope the opponents your team faces are the one that they typically do well against.

  24. The East has done slightly better in interconference play than the West. I would say the conferences are pretty much even. The 7 and 8 seeds in the West have more points than the 7 and 8 in the East because the 3 worst teams in the league are in the West.

  25. I like the current playoff format, but there should be a couple caveats:
If the 2nd & 3rd place teams in a division both have more points than the 2nd & 3rd place teams in the other division (in the same conference), then there would be crossover matchups for the first round. For example, if Dallas & Colorado both finish with more points than LA & Edmonton, then the first round matchups would be Dallas/Edmonton and LA/Colorado. This ensures that 2 teams in the top half of a conference aren't meeting in the first round.
Additionally, if the top 2 teams by points in a conference are slated in the 2nd round, then there would be another set of crossover matchups. For example, if Winnipeg and Dallas finish 1 & 2 in the West, and both win their first round matchups, then Winnipeg would play the winner of the 2v3 Pacific matchup, and Dallas would play the winner of the VGKvWC1 matchup.

  26. Did you ever think that some of those teams on the bottom in the west are so low in points is because the top 10 or 11 teams in the west are just that good? There is no real way to know.

  27. In Denmark we currently have 1 vs. 8 and so on in the playoffs, but before this, no. 1-4 was picking from the bottom half in first round

  28. 5:40 You are the most brainwashed guy on the interweeebz… Dallas is Nashville level of past good names on paper. Dallas would lose vs Tranta and I don't like Tranta. Rant is a classic wash up and will ride a paycheck to retirement and should be on the NYR before next years TD. Benn should retire, other guys just don't cut it like before, remember when the Preds were good and how they faded away; well you're watching it again.

  29. The problem with judging teams by how well they do against bottom teams is that they play the bottom teams at different times. Boston in particular went through a huge crash in the season

  30. strange comparison bottom five overall how does that seperate the east vs west?, so winnipeg plays chi and san jose 8 times and the caps get boston and phil 8 times adv winnipeg for presidents cup, i think jets deserve presidents cup having beaten caps twice in 3 on 3 ot which is not caps strength.3 on 3 does not exist in playoffs, advantage caps 5 on 5. ,west and east is comparable with top five on each side being close ,
i hope its caps jets in playoff final. they desreve it, no drama with either team
