Ullmark's interviews continue to be amazing. Grounded, straightforward & honest. Love it.
Travis' interviews are awesome. Doesn't take the bait. Stands up for his Team while acknowledging the need to improve where that is needed. The message needs to be consistent as players watch this too. Sign of a good coach. I have no doubt on the right messaging for the current moment here. This best sets us up for a higher probability of success. Sens in 7.
The sens core is only 2-3 years younger than the leafs. They have 9 years less playoff experience.
These boys don’t realize that penalties still get called in playoffs, some things you can’t do and the inexperienced sens showed reckless discipline issues.

Discipline was terrible.
We were not the better team 5 on 5.
But the worst thing was this: you’d have been hard pressed to know that the Sens were taking part in a playoff game. The passion, grit, determination, physicality and downright nastiness simply wasn’t there. The leafs had a lot more.
The whole sport feels very, very different than it did 20 years ago. I’m not sure I like that.

Ullmark needed to be better, by a lot, but there was so much diving last night that I wasn't sure if I was watching a hockey game or the Olympic Trials.
The Sens showed their inexperience by taking obvious penalties from over-aggression that had to be called, regardless of whether it is a regular season or playoff game. The young boneheads like Grieg and Stutzle who haven't figured out where the line is drawn can learn from Captain Tkachuk. He is one of the best at finding it.
It's a fine line, but penalties are penalties. They need to stay on top of the Leafs but can't go over the top, especially in the offensive zone. It's foolish and uninformed to blame this on the refs. The Sens will learn and improve, or they'll have plenty of early tee times.
The Leafs wanted to play a patient game and did so to perfection. They don't care about time of possession, ineffective hits, or racking up huge shot totals from the perimeter, but they'll definitely take advantage of fewer opportunities when a goalie is performing like Ulmark in this game.
Leafs fan here, good to see you guys back in the playoffs. I have a feeling next game wont be as easy.

Quick question, but how many faceoffs was Ottawa’s center kicked out of? Tough to win those draws and set up your PK when your players constantly start out of position.
We waited 8 years for this performance in game 1?! Maybe it will be better next game but wow.

To sum up this game pretty much the Chabot & Jensen pair wasn't good they cost us the first couple goals, Highmore was a cause of a goal and then obviously penalties killed us with them scoring 3 on the PP. PK unit needs to be way better and Ullmark needs to be way sharper on the PK as well but not all on him. Just a rough first game all around for the Sens. Really hope they figure it out Game 2. But it's clear shots on 5 on 5 and the hits we were the better team. GSG!
Just so Ottawa fans are aware, the Leafs are very comfortable letting the opposition have the puck 5 on 5. They are also very comfortable being out shot and letting those shots come from the outside. The Leafs have won a lot of games this season with this exact formula. So if Ottawa thinks they outplayed the Leafs 5 on 5, and they think it will only be a matter of time, they have no chance at winning this series. They gotta find a way to get scoring chances in the middle of the ice consistently

Fix the pk, win more faceoffs, take less penalties, have more gamesmanship than the other team, Ullmark needs to be better than their goalie, control top line, more ice to Zetterberg, get cousins in.

I don’t know guys this didn’t look like playoff hockey to me. Low intensity, was more boring than a regular season game against Minnesota. I wasn’t impressed by the ‘battle of Ontario’ all this hype for that snooze fest. Not even a fight? Brady fought game 1 in the 4 nations! Where’s the passion? I saw none of it.

Sens need to close up a little, Leafs are tops at finding seams and just darting through either individually or in odd-mans. They'll keep doing this with a lot less frequency as you tighten up.
As for Ullmark, I feel the Vezina talk is whistling past the graveyard. He was a backup that year, on a Boston team that was out of this world. Ottawa's a good team but there's no Pastrnak, Marchand, Bergeron etc. even at their reducd strength. Ullmark's playoff stats are…not good. A bunch of .850-.880 sp% games so…while he certainly can pick it up, Leafs would do well to just get on him constantly to see if they can get 2-3 goals early on.
Merilainen could and should see play. I know what Pillzy is saying about confidence, but this is the playoffs man. You gotta stop high-danger stuff, ordinary stuff, 9.1/10 shots need to be turned away. If he's that shaky then he's not going to be the one, you know?

I'm not worried. I predicted the Sens to lose Game 1. The Leafs weren't that much better than us as the score doesn't indicate. They had better goaltending, and the reffing was terrible. Now they're going to be overconfident. I except the Sens to be firing on all cylinders Game 2.
