Why didn't they do this sooner? I tip my cap to the NFL for thinking a couple of steps ahead businesswise. MLB, my true passion, needs to start thinking about expanding interest in countries that aren't currently interested in baseball.
I think the NFL needs to create a pro flag football league to develop players for the Olympics and older/retired players can still play the game.
The women already play flag football. Mexico has beaten the USA for championship already…so USA watch out, the world is ready. 🎉
Although I am not a fan of football, I do appreciate videos like this on sporting news with wide appeal (Olympics). Whereas football is an injurious sport, and thus your comment on why the Olympics has just flag football, boxing is appreciably more violent and graphic.
I am still shocked the NBA or Big 3 didnt send the 3 on 3 squad to the games last time.
Will MLB allow there player to play in the 2028 olympics then
Im usually not negative about this kinda stuff… But this is really lame. The Olympics used to be something to be in awe of and respected. Now between younger generations seeing it as very corrupt (due to access to information older generations didn't have) and stuff like break dancing and now this..
Next up. Paper football? Quidditch?
Really lame. Flag football is fine for kids/high school PE. But when we look back at the great Olympic athletes of all time, having flag football next to them seems like disrespect and degrades what the Olympic metal means/is worth.
But as you said "it's good business" and that makes it seem even scummier.
I wonder, having seen it in youth no-check hockey, where is the gray area between an illegal tackle and an inadvertent fall after contact? Where do you find experienced referees and officials in flag football?
I think this idea has potential, but to launch it in the Olympics rather than through an independent league (I don’t know of any) has the potential to turn this into a mockery. There will be lots of situations and discretionary calls that have no rule or precedent in how to address them. The insurance and injury-related salary cap exemption is a nice gesture, but it won’t replace losing a star player.
Old news.
Know this months & months ago.
You will be surprised
Germany & Serbia will be competitive for a start.
This just shows
how self-absorbed
the U.S.A . is a nation
The E.L.F starts later today & there are a vast number of domestic leagues globally. Plus, we are talking 7 a side so it will be a lot more competitive than
Americans think it will be.
Wow what a spectacle.
No offense to nfl but American football should not be an olympic sport why because outside usa, canada, mexico no one cares about american football. For me an olympic sport has to have international appeal. American Football does not have it.
It competes against rugby sevens. One wonders which version of "oval ball" gets eyeballs on the screen, the full-contact version or the kids' playground version.
I can see Canada, Mexico, and Germany giving the US a run for their money. As they say, anyone can beat anyone at anytime.
This is just stupid. Football is not an international game and creating flag football just for the LA Olympics is pandering. I’d rather see rugby
It's weird that flag football is in, but not regular football. It's like having T-ball but not baseball.
The NFL has a lot of players who are from the Continent of Africa. I think one of those countries there will be the greatest challenge for them in the Olympics.
Hopefully some soccer skills carry over so the other countries have a chance.
I want to see the equivalent of the 1992 NBA Dream Team, not a single player representing each country because 125 years ago their ancestors came from there. This may be better suited for a recently retired player (Aaron Rodgers or JJ Watt) than a current player as the chance for a gold medal is greatly decreased.
Flag football? Is there any kicking?
Boy I sure am glad the NFL has found a way to possibly increase their revenue stream. I was kinda worried the owners might have to start taking the bus to work. Okay, sarcasm aside, what happens if a top QB, say a guy like Josh Allen, participates in the Olympics and some freak accident happens. Maybe somebody unintentionally collides with him and he breaks a leg or tears up an ACL. Or maybe some over zealous rugby or Australian rules football player takes a cheap shot to prove they are tougher than NFL players. Sure, the owners get covered, but what about the fans who miss out on a championship run because a key player got taken out for the year? Could something like that happen? It's probably doubtful, but a lot of probably doubtful stuff happens. It's why they're called accidents.
I stopped watching the Olympics a while back but one cool thing about them back in the day was every now and again a no-name hero or group of unknowns would capture the world's attention. Remember Eddie the Eagle? The ski jumper from the U.K who was famous for the effort? The Jamaican bobsled team? And of course, the greatest bunch of underdogs in the history of the games, the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team. They inspired an entire nation in a way that, well, ya had to be there. The Olympics used to be a showcase for amateur's, people who would dedicate months and years preparing for a shot at a medal. Like Herb Brooks said: "Now that we have dream teams people seldom get a chance to dream."
When the Olympics became a showcase for pros, a long all-star tournament, they lost me. This is just another example of pro sports taking away something from the amateur ranks. The world needs more Bobby Jones' and Eddie's and less LeBron's but that's me. I don't really have a dog in the hunt since I won't watch in any event. But hey, good on ya NFL. Maybe you can play a game on Mars and start working on the intergalactic audience.
Why? Just why? There are so many other sports (sports Americans have never heard of) that can be added than elementary school yard games 🙄 This is going to play the same way Breakdancing did in Paris 😅
Will definitely skip this game of tag & just watch the rugby 🏉 teams instead!
ADULT PUSSIES ~ This is not an Olympic caliber game MFL players should want to participate in…
Canadian Football and Austalian Rules Football & Rugby players can play flag football. 🧐
