Ekblad hasn't played a full season since 20-21. He's very good, but 8.5m AAV is steep on a long term deal.

Morgan Rielly is probably the one guy that always step up in the playoffs. Why on earth would the organization want him to go anywhere? Ekblad wont go to the leafs either. Should the Maple Leafs buy out Reilly’s contract if he doesnt agree to waive his no move. They would be saving a significant amount against the cap. Since the payout is spread out double the number of years of the remaining contract it can be absorbed quite easily. Here are the particulars:
Contract Overview & Buyout Terms
• Age: 31 → team owes 2/3 of remaining base salary.
• Remaining seasons: 5 (2025‑26 through 2029‑30).
• Base salary (per year from CapWages):
• 2025–26: $8 M
• 2026–27 through 2029–30: $6 M each   
• Total remaining salary: $8 M + (4 × $6 M) = $32 M
• Payout: ⅔ × $32 M = $21.33 M, spread over double the remaining years → 10 years
• Annual payout/Cap hit over 10 years: ~$2.133 M/year
Take that 6 million savings and apply it to Ekblad, ten go after Marchand or Bennett.

The Leafs organization continues to show that it has no idea how to build a winning franchise. They continue to over pay players, they give out too many no movement clauses and they trade away any prospects they do have for players than don't move the needle in the right direction. WHat they do with Tavares will show if they understand they need to change how they do things. Shanahan and Dubas were terrible managers and took the team in the wrong direction. Yes they won lots of regular season games and many players got tons of points in the regular season, but proved to to too weak and heartless to do anything in the playoffs. IN my opinion they need to get worse before they get better.

I been saying ekblad be great fit for various reasons leader born from Toronto 29 minites a night kills pentaltys most importantly likes to be physical and can elevate his game when the going gets tough hes also smart good puck sense and chip into plays he only ped positive because of an injury he had to take them by his doctor to get over

Toronto will lose. Why are you saying things are changing? They haven't changed for 58 years. If they got rid of Mathews, Reilly, Tavares and Marner. Then sure that would be a move forward. Hope would resurface. But I don't think that's what you said .

If Marchand signs with Florida, I good replacement might be Mikael Granlund of the Stars. Younger than Marchand with just as much grit for half the price. Many Florida Panthers YouTubers are talking about this instead of resigning Marchand. Might be something for Toronto to consider as well.
