Why would you turn down a Florida team?
Oilers are offering Howard a spot on their NHL roster and Tampa was only offering him a chance to prove he's deserving of a spot in their NHL roster eventually. Edmonton benefited from it today, but what if Howard is not NHL ready because he has only played with other junior teams and has never played professional hockey before and can't handle the sizes of other player and is sent back down in the AHL. Is he gonna request a trade? Personally, I'd be mad if I was a 26 year old forward in Edmonton who's giving it all to reach the Oilers roster but couldn't because there is some kind of pact with Howard. Anyway, wish him well but he didn't fit in Tampa's hockey culture and I'm happy he's gone
Good trade for Tampa Bay.. Get rid of a bust for the Oilers top 2 prospect in their pool that's 19… Tampa understands they need to get young which is encouraging
Why was Howard never gonna sign with the lightning?
I do not like that the Oilers gut their farm system by trading, failing to match offer sheets, or neglect and stagnation in the AHL. No development through loyalty to players in the farm system for the Oilers.

Sucks to see Howard go. I was excited about him from the moment he was drafted. I get the lineup was crowded, but who knows with training camp and preseason he could have earned his spot. Just never sits right with me when a young player wants guaranteed top six minutes. It rarely happens unless you’re a Crosby, Ovechkin, or Bedard level prospect

Just adding a player you like or feel has some upside is not good management.
You need to determine what ROLE he will play a scoring type player on the third or 4th line is a waste of time.Top 5 are the scorers so if your adding a scorer he needs to be top 6.
Bottom 6 are the guys that are tough to ply against work hard make life tough for opposing D and play the body lot and solid defensively however in modern hockey I seldom see any good defensive forwards.
IMO this trade was an "accommodation" trade NOT a trade that will impact either team at all.

Great that players donate equipment as I wonder what Hockey will be like in 20+ yrs. The gear, ice time and league fee's are out of control and many parents will push their kids towards other sport as they just can't afford Hockey. Are we seeing the last few years of vast talent and a huge drop off coming.

Being a Lightning fan, it is unfortunate that the Bolts weren't able to make ends meet with Howard but I like that they got another first round pick with a lot of promise in this trade. I think O'Reilly will be a solid addition to the Lightning lineup when he joins.
As a Tampa fan I'm really happy with this trade. Last thing we need is another Jonathan drouin on our hands. I'm just really happy we got somebody decent for him but I would have been okay with almost any prospect.

Technically Vancouver is probably farther, but you can't get much further away than Edm from Tampa and I'm thrilled about that. He's not as talented as Drouin and he's had a good career but I still hate that dude after acting like he did. I wish Howard and Drouin no success in the NHL.
Everyone is loving the trade for Tampa but there's like a 90% chance JBB trades him for an NHL Dman. I would if I were JBB.
