Didn't see the Caps play a whole lot this season, but watching Ovi in the playoffs he seemed slow and just stood around waiting for that one timer. Note he didn't play much when the Caps were protecting a lead late in playoff games.
They sure can, because the Caps built a time machine to get Ovie playing like he's in his 20's. That, plus the Caps are a very well-coached team cuz everyone's putting up solid numbers…
Well put together and well coached team with a bright future
Shannon, you and OV has something in common. Both of you don't know who goalie Clay Stevenson is! 😄
With Hunter Shepard signing with the Sens for their AHL affiliate, Stevenson now becomes the 3rd string goalie for the Caps.
I think that PL Dubois is a better player than Jakob Chychrun with a lower AAV on his contract. Defense matters. Dubois is one of the better defensive forwards in the NHL, and Chychrun has serious issues on defense. I'm worried about the Chychrun contract, but I am not worried about the Dubois contract. I actually like Fehervary more than I like Chychrun, and he's getting paid only 2/3rds of what Chychrun is getting.
I also like Cristall more than Miroshnichenko. I'm hoping that it's Cristall on that second line with Dubois and Wilson. I think that Dubois and Wilson will do a fantastic job covering for Cristall's lack of size, experience, speed, and defense. And Cristall's playmaking abilities should do well with those two linemates. Plus, we really need Cristall on our power play. That was our biggest weakness in the regular season last season.
I don't know if the Capitals will win the division again, but I think they'll be right up there with Carolina, and I don't expect New Jersey, New York Rangers, or Columbus to keep up with the top two teams in the division. I expect New Jersey to be a high 90s or low 100ish points playoff team, but I expect Carolina and Washington to both be up there around 110ish points.
Washington has a very deep team. Their 3rd pairing defensemen and their 3rd (hopefully) and 4th lines are very good. Last season they had issues on their 3rd line, but if they can get those resolved (maybe Sourdif as 3C, if McMichael's defensive issues prevent him from being a good 3C or maybe with Protas reuniting with McMichael), the third line should be good. And as Shannon said, Lindgren is one of the best backup goalies in the NHL. Washington lacks star power with Ovechkin on the decline, but they make up for it with fantastic depth, a great coach, and players that fit the system very well.
Canes could look poised to win the Metro, but they still have to play the regular season out. Devils could be better if Hughes stays healthy. Rangers will be improved with Sullivan as their coach, but overall their team will still heavily rely on Shesterkin, which is not necessarily a good thing.
I am really worried about McMichael's production with third line minutes.
Will they repeat last year's performance in the regular season? I doubt
ALL CAPS 😊.
He should go for a thousand. What else does he have to do? Gordie Howe played till he was 50.
Holding off on signing anyone is the right move because then you can pace yourself in the regular season and then pounce on a player at the deadline
Ovechkin is 41 goals away from tying the total NHL record of Regular Season + Playoffs goals. 25 away from 1000 in total.
Alex will retire from NHL play when he and his family decide to go back to Russia- it will not be because of goal-scoring production decreasing, nor will goal-scoring dip bc of age w/ him. RMNB
us Jets fans appreciated PLD until he started coasting and looking completely disinterested. When he could be bothered to put the effort in, he was great. That he found a coach who could actually get him engaged for most of the game is good for him.
Many fans felt he had a bit of "main character" syndrome, thinking he deserved the top line.
Caps will rebrand their look once Ovi retires
I predict he plays one more year, then heads for KHL for a season or two before retiring.
Capitals are not that old of a team, I know everyone looks at the 40 year old legend, but the guys around him are getting younger and younger. This teams headlines are not the old core that was the case just a couple years ago. Things are changing in Washington and this teams depth could put them in serious contention without having the top of the line talent of other teams
They will either be in first place or they’ll miss the playoffs altogether.
They'll drop a bit but not because they get worse but because the other teams are better. Ovi will likely drop a bit, literally nothing else to chase. They'll be 2nd or 3rd I reckon. Another 2nd round exit to a bettet team
in my nhl franchise mode hes still playing at 45
5mil for Dylan Strome and 8.5 for Dubois is insane to me. How did this guy get 8.5
Caps are set to integrate more youth into lineup, so may not finish top of the conference again, but could become a faster and more dangerous playoff team by season’s end.
They are going to step back but I don't know if it could be 2023 season or just a 2-3 in the division. They should be able to fight for a playoff spot for sure.
Which is kind of crazy they have been good for a long time. The pipeline of youngsters may keep them competitive once Ovie retires. That’s kind of insane and shows how good the overall management is despite questionable trades at times recently
Almost all of this is wrong. 😂 "Had a season nobody was expecting…" WHAT? 😂Management certainly was when they said they were going to do something special for their 50th anniversary and went out and flipped nearly the entire roster! As for this upcoming season, Cristall and Sourdif are guaranteed to make the roster as is Leonard. Milano is reportedly healthy but likely gets waived after camp. Miroshnichenko and Lapierre will get a look at camp but very possible one or both are traded. Unlikely they or Ilya Protas make the roster. Overall, Washington is still a playoff team and arguably better going into this season than they were going into last. At the deadline, they have plenty of assets to move to load up for the playoffs.
Ovi is done 17 goals this year DONE ✔️
can you do a video about the average ages of players at the time of their debut? maybe highlight the superstars that made it young, and fringe players that had their debut in their 30s? maybe add the average retirement ages too
He will chase 1000
Great players can put on a great push at an old age when aiming for a target. I'm old enough to remember Henry Aaron going after Babe Ruth's HR record. He hit 40 HRs when he was 40 years old to get to within one of the record, and broke the record in the first week of the 1974 season and after that he was just another old man playing out the string. In 3 more years of MLB he hit around 40 more HRs. I expect the same will happen with Ovechkin. He broke Gretzky's record and with the record reached, he's gonna fall off a cliff. Maybe I'll be wrong, but that's what I expect.
Hoping Ovie goes for 1000
Kremlin should want OVI to get 1000 goals. That way rusiia can live rent free in north americans heads.
Just for the record ovi didn't sit w bumps and bruises…
PLD is worth every penny as Caps
Does anyone else find it funny how they have several players with brothers in the NHL. Charile Lindgren, Dylan Strome, Trevor Van Reimsdyk. They have both Protas Brothers, and Cole Hutson. For refrence the stats for Lane and Cole are simular for their draft years and 1 season after.
Caps ain’t rebounding. Prepare the rebuild
I think Ovechkin retires from the NHL after his contract is up, and goes back home to play in the KHL for a few years.
Picking them to finish 2nd in their division and out in the first round. I have more faith in a full season with Carolina getting more points. Don't see anyone else competing for the 1st or 2nd seed in the Metro. Hoping Ovi has another 40 goal season. Don't want to see Crosby and Ovi retire because it makes me feel too old. However one day Barkov will retire and my life is officially done. Time to put on the grandpa pants.
They overpaid every player by a mil which is insane
Idk if a broken femur is a bump or bruise 😂
Missing out on Ehlers was frustrating, especially going to Carolina. I think we have a glaring hole for a top 6 winger. I hope we can make a trade because we have plenty of good prospects and cap space. The move for Chisholm was interesting, so maybe someone on defense gets moved for a top 6 wing?
I still think this will be Ovechkin's last season, but he did say he wants to play as long as he feels good and is having fun.
I don't think we trounce the East again, but I can expect us as in the playoffs still. Let's make that trade, and let's go caps!
What teams are cutting down on salary cap THIS year, to hopefully lure McDavid next year?
Today I learned I share a birthday with Ovi.
Ovi always said he would play 1 year in the KHL before retiring. This is definitely his last year and it's been somewhat known around Caps fans for awhile
If this team needs a young player to help the forwards watch out for Ilya Protas! As a Windsor Spitfires fan I watched him dominate in his first season in The OHL. He is the complete package. Please send him back to Windsor if The Capitals don't want him. Please!
No
Three more seasons! 1000 regular season goals!
Finally dowd getting the flowers he deserves
